Built in 1819, this Grade 1 listed playhouse is the only surviving example of a Regency theatre in the UK. It is the only theatre open to the public in the National Trust's portfolio of properties. Fully restored to it's Georgian splendour, the intimate auditorium and exquisite decorative scheme will provide visitors with an unforgettable and unique theatrical experience. The Theatre presents a vibrant, year-round programme of drama, music, dance and stand up comedy. We also offer regular tours of the building, contact our Box Office to book a space on one of our tours.

We went again to our little theatre last night, I have not reviewed since the seating was improved. The play I went to see was unfortunately not to my taste but the theatre never fails to impress . The bar is excellent, warming and atmosphere very friendly. The staff are volunteers and it is a National Trust Property. It is... More

We were amazed at this little theatre. Having done the brewery tour (opposite) at the begining of the month, Mareen, our tour guide explained about the Theatre Royal and how it is now looked after by the National Trust. What a superb job they have done with this place. It's excellently run, being ushered to our seats in good time.... More

Saw the Reduced Shakespeare Theatre Company on Thursday 16th Feb. First time I have visited the theatre. A small theatre space allowing you to feel close to the action. We sat in box G in the dress circle, perfect view of the stage. A great evening of entertainment.

He loves Shakespeare so I surprised him with a trip to the theatre to see Reduced Shakespeare Company as I had heard good reviews of this. Not disappointed, the show was fantastic, havent laughed so much in ages and he loved it as well. The theatre was smaller than I expected it to be but it was delightful. The box... More

This is a charming old theatre, set in a wonderful old town with some excellent restaurants. Unfortunately there are rarely good productions, particularly over the weekends. If only they had a live wire team to put a spark in to the place!

We went to see the pantomime on 2 December and the whole family throughly enjoyed the evening we laughed and sang along. Our view was fab and so were the ice creams. Looking forward to this years performance.

Second visit to Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds, this time to see Northanger Abbey, published shortly after Jane Austen died in 1817. Terrific production, all the more so because this theatre dates to 1819 and is one of only eight Grade 1 listed theatres in the UK. The Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds provides a good idea of... A delightful and unusual theatre, visit for a tour and a show if you can. Seeing Northanger Abbey there was a wonderful period experience.

Authentic atmosphere, accurately restored, small and intimate. Very reasonably priced tickets, and great variety of productions. Always worth a visit.
