Built in 1819, this Grade 1 listed playhouse is the only surviving example of a Regency theatre in the UK. It is the only theatre open to the public in the National Trust's portfolio of properties. Fully restored to it's Georgian splendour, the intimate auditorium and exquisite decorative scheme will provide visitors with an unforgettable and unique theatrical experience. The Theatre presents a vibrant, year-round programme of drama, music, dance and stand up comedy. We also offer regular tours of the building, contact our Box Office to book a space on one of our tours.

The theatre is intimate with a great variety of productions. The seating following the last refurbishment isn't great, but still retains all the character and is a great night out. What a lot of people don't realise, however, is that you can hire the whole theatre, including stage, for parties. We had our wedding reception here and it was perfect... More

The Theatre Royal has a character of its own, it is small but was refurbished several years ago. Do ot be put off because of its size, although small it has a big character. It has a good programme of shows and the Panto's are always fun.

I'm so lucky to be living local so I can enjoy visiting the theatre often; they offer an enormous variety of shows, the staff are super friendly and they are extremely welcoming and accommodating when supporting people with special needs; looking forward to their new brochure so I/we can plan future performances / shows to visit.

This is a most charming Georgian theatre and is therefore small quaint. The volunteer staff were so friendly and helpful and the bar area provided all you need to set you up for your selected visit.

Unique restored Georgian theatre which puts on good variety of shows and dramas. However pick your seat carefully, some do not have very good views of the stage, some are uncomfortable, and some are difficult to access if you have less than 100% mobility. Back 4 rows of the pit are best for view and comfort!

Went to the theatre to watch a pantomime! Expected it to be awful because those things normally are but it was actually quite good. Went with my missus and her mum and aunt. Thought the acting was incredible! Definitely aimed at children but definitely enough quips in there to be adult friendly too!! A few innuendos in there to keep... More

This is simply beautiful. It is fairly small by normal theatre sizes, and so quite intimate, and is a gem. The décor is pure Regency and it’s impossible NOT to imagine it filled with people dressed in Georgian clothes, the ladies with fans, maybe flirting(!) and being ‘seen’. The ceiling is painted realistically to look like clouds, giving the whole... More

A very amusing play with a very serious message about falling pregnant as an unmarried young woman. All beautifully presented in the delightful Theatre Royal.
