Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Visited yesterday 3rd November. It's always a welcoming place. Lovely people in gift shop, restaurant and main building. A place of peace and hope, you can light a candle for someone you care about, and a hope you hold, and place prayer cards.

My wife and I were in Bury today and decided to go into the Cathederal. We intended to eat in the Refectory, as we had done before,. We decided to visit the gift shop and look at the progress of the Lego model first. After purchasing some items in the shop (very helpful and friendly staff), we went into the Cathederal istself. We were confronted by a number of tables set for a meal but were approched by a very pleasant man who said,"Please don't be put off by all this, we have a charity event later but you are welcome to look around."
We then went to the Lego model, which looked amazing and had grown a lot since we were last there. We chatted with the man in attendance, who was very friendly and added some bricks to the model as we have done before.
After listening to the communion service which was already in progress in a side chapel, we found a small lift leading down to a door with a sign 'Entrance to cloister'. My wife is disabled and was in her mobility scooter so we got into the lift and went down to the door. It proved to be locked so we were about to go back up and go the long way round when a key was placed in the door and it was opened.
This was when our visit deteriorated as a very rude and pompous individual (a member of the clergy) 'dressed us down' as if we were naughty children because apparently there was a sign, which we had not seen, telling us seek assistance from a steward. He then said," It's a good job I was here or you would have been stuck!" A totally fatuous remark as we would have just gone back up in the lift.
We were both very upset by being addressed in such a manner and left the building immediately to find lunch elsewhere.
We shall NEVER set foot in this building EVER again and will find somewhere else to eat lunch when we are in Bury. Steve and Sue.

We visited on a Sunday, waiting until the morning service had finished, and joining the stragglers.
A statuesque building in the centre of the city, huge in proportions but feeling intimate and friendly.
My other half and I both love to visit Cathedrals and churches, him to take photographs and me to stand in awe, reflect and pray. St Edmundsbury served both these options, with access to quiet areas and also high ceilings, plenty of stained glass and, of course, the Lego in the corner - a scaled model of the building being constructed in Lego, with visitors and regulars being offered the chance to assist the build by buying a brick for a donation of £1; an inspired fund-raising idea.
A postcard, purchased from the well stocked and tasteful Cathedral shop, showed the extent of the cathedral and it's ancillary buildings when it was first constructed, and you get an impression of the importance and grandeur of the site.
A beautiful place to visit whether you are looking for photo opportunities, architectural wonders or just seeking to reach out to God.

Definitely worth a visit! I had a lovely tour with Karen - strongly recommend taking a tour as you learn so much more than you would walking round on your own. It's a wonderful space with a fascinating history. There is also a super fun lego exhibit! The tour takes about an hour, plus I'd recommend 30min or so to admire the cathedral on your own and check out the cloisters. This cathedral has a deceptive appearance - it looks like it could have been built hundreds of years ago but the most recent additions are as new as the 2000s - this stunning building is not to be missed if you're in Bury St Edmunds.

The christmas Carol service was replaced by too tihghly packed stalls, such that you couldnot stop to look at the stalls very well.

This cathedral feels bright and welcoming. Having recently visited several somewhat stuffy cathedrals in France and Spain, this one in Bury St Edmunds felt part of the modern world. It struck me as a living community space. I particularly liked the intricate Lego building model and the medieval font with the amazing cover which at first sight appears to hover over it but actually has a counterweight tucked away in a corner. Don't miss the craftsmanship of the millennium tower.

We finally took our 9yr old son here, usually we only visit just us adults. Today we added bricks to the Lego cathedral, our son was very happy to help make the disabled toilet. There was also a tapestry art exhibit which was so stunning and colourful. We love visiting here when in Bury it’s such a beautiful place and the grounds are amazing.

A wonderfully impressive, airy building - stunning ceiling. There was a fascinating exhibition of new tapestries when we visited.

How far is the cathedral from the station - walking distance?
It takes about 10/15 minutes to walk. There are two routes - either through the town centre or straight along Fornham Road/Northgate Street (more or less in a straight line from the station to Angel Hill, where the Cathedral is located)

Cost of the tower
The Millennium Project, which included the building of the Tower, was funded from 3 sources. The project would not have happened had it not been for a bequest of £2 million from the Stephen Dykes Bower Trust (the former Cathedral architect who died in 1994). In addition to this gift, £4 million was raised through public appeal and £6 million was provided by the Millennium Commission, therefore making the total project cost £12 million (Tower, Chapel of the Transfiguration, North Transept, Crypt Treasury and East Cloisters).
