Overpriced and a little disappointing.

Beautiful location and pretty grounds. Unfortunately the house appeared very ‘tired’ and in need of a good clean and restoration in most rooms. Volunteers were knowledgeable and friendly. Gardens underwhelming and the pond had been left half empty and green with algae. Car park available.

Lovely visit
Jul 2021
Very nice staff both those outside and those in the Hall.
Knowledgeable staff made the limited access (due to covid) a fine experience.
Interesting and enjoyable time.
Worth a visit!

Worth a visit

Covid-19 restrictions mean that you have to book in advance.
A one way system is in place to ensure social distancing.
Due to the restrictions, some of the rooms weren’t open, which was a shame.
There are hosts in most of the available areas, and we listened to several interesting stories about the owner and his family, the big fire and a reference to Beatrix Potter.
The is a coffee shop on site, but we did not use it.
Gardens are lovely.
We were in and out in about 90 minutes.

Don’t arrive before 12
May 2021 • Couples
We arrived early for our visit due to the distance we traveled. Staff were not happy by this and we were told to wait before attempting to walk up the drive. House is worth a visit, volunteer s knowledgeable about the property. The garden is quite small and the herbaceous border very pretty at the moment. Not somewhere I would rush to visit again!

Excellent visit to this beautiful house and gardens
Jun 2021 • Couples
Spent a lovely afternoon in the house and grounds of this beautiful property.
Its lovely to see the connection with Beatrix Potter and the room that she stayed in when there.
The flower borders were beautiful.
The flag irises truly astounding.
Well worth a visit.

Very unfriendly towards dogs
May 2021
We visited with our gorgeous placid laid back greyhound.
We passed the entry staff with no word about our dog, we got out of the car and passed another member of staff, nothing said.
We went through a gate, passed more staff - nothing said.
After using the facilities, we then were about to start looking around when a staff member came over and advised dogs are not allowed.
Now i understand dogs aren't allowed inside National Trust houses which is acceptable, but not in the grounds!?.
We had to return to our car and leave.
Very unhappy and disgusted with National Trusts attitude towards dogs.

Home of the Tailor of Gloucester!

It's a fascinating house and well worth exploring. To our delight and surprise Beatrice Potter, author of the 'Peter Rabbit' stories was a regular visitor. A fireplace and several pieces of furniture provided the inspiraion for the details in many of her drawings.

Melford Hall is located only a few minutes drive from Lavenham and the two places offer interesting and contrasting visits.

Melford in a different light
Nov 2019 • Solo
Visited Melford on Sunday when it was their house party weekend by candlelight. Greeted by the butler & room guides all dressed up in evening wear. Super afternoon very atmospheric. Very different to the usual opening days. They hold this on the last weekend of their season. Excellent afternoon.

A very historic house which is still a family home
Oct 2019
We visited just 2 days before the Hall closed for the winter and were very sorry to miss the next (last) day when we were told the volunteers all dress in period costume and treat all visitors as "guests of the household"
The house has a very interesting history and we really recommend a visit.

Its interesting but!!
Nov 2019 • Friends
It's an interesting house but be warned you will only see a small part of the house, the grounds are fine. One wing is where the family live the other wing was totally burnt down in the fifties so that wing is modern in as much as it's as it was when they rebuilt in that time. The main hall and other areas in the part of the house are old and interesting.
