The Victoria Tunnels in Newcastle were an absolute gem of a find and superb value for money. A forgotten piece of Newcastle’s history which was expertly brought to life by our guides John and Phil. Covering two significant periods of the tunnel’s history, John and Phil provided a fascinating insight to their inception and their use during the second world war. Do not be put off by other reports suggesting face masks must be worn, that is not the case.

We went on the 75 minute tour today with Phil and John. It was brilliant!

Phil and John are great guides - full of both knowledge and personality. The history they share is informative and interesting. They also bring a human element to help you appreciate life in the tunnel as a worker and as someone during the war. There are also some very entertaining parts too which will make you laugh!

Now I’ve been, I understand why it’s the top thing to do in Newcastle.

Thank you, its great to hear from our visitors, especially when you've had such a wonderful tour. We are understandably proud of being top of Things to do in Newcastle for the past nine consecutive years, but prouder still of our fantastic team of volunteer guides. Phil and John take great delight in creating the ambience on our tours and are great knowledgeable and entertaining. Thanks for your recommendation.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tour of the Victoria Tunnel. While the tunnel itself was interesting as a feat of engineering, it was the guides, John and Phil who really brought it's fascinating history to life. They were friendly, approachable and extremely knowledgeable. The time just flew by and I highly recommend this tour.

We spent two hours in the company of Pete and Bill, who did a great job of bringing to life one of the most unusual pieces of city history - a 2-mile tunnel under the city of Newcastle. It is a 2-part story: its origins in industry; and its part in WWII. The tunnel is a constant 12 degrees C, so it's best to dress reasonably warmly; and its maximum height is 6' 3", so the hard hats provided are an essential safety item. Thoroughly recommended.

Thank you for giving us this fantastic review. Pete and Bill are delighted that you enjoyed their "Bringing History to Life" whilst delighting you with their hugely entertaining tour. Thanks for your recommendation and mention of the constant temperature of 12c, which is great way to cool off during the summer and warm enough during our normal Geordie weather.

My visit to the Victoria Tunnel was great, the guides were Mal and Trish and they were very friendly and informative and answered all questions. They also worked well together to add sound effects to stories and really paint a picture. The tunnel itself is pretty cool. Not ideal for people over 6ft as you may be crouching a little bit the whole time! Wear some shoes you don't mind getting slightly wet and dirty.

Thank you for this "Interesting and Enjoyable" review of your recent tour. Mal and Trish will be delighted to see you enjoyed their friendly and informative stories, working together and painting such an exciting picture and sound effects for you to experience how life must have been here during WW2.

We found the visit to the Victoria Tunnel, really interactive and interesting. Our Guides on the day in the tunnel Mal and Trish were really engaging with telling us all about the Victoria tunnel with stories to bring the history to life. They were happy to answer questions. Health and safety was good.

Pete the tour guide very informative this morning. Time passed so quick hard to believe people actually worked in the tunnel and used during the war.

Absolutely useless. The only place in the whole UK. still insisting on masks ‘for everyone’s safety’ What a load of silly nonsense and very discriminatory against those exempt from masks. This is no longer a requirement ANYWHERE! Do all the staff wear masks all the time? No of course they don’t. So stop discriminating!

Hi, thanks for your review. As you know I kindly responded to your email this morning and gave you and your wife the full refund. As a safety precaution I follow NHS and WHO advice; this states - "Wear a properly fitted mask when physical distancing is not possible and in poorly ventilated settings". We consider and constantly review our safety policies for our volunteer guides and to protect our visitors. The Victoria Tunnel is a very confined space, being two yards x two yards and when occupied by up to 14 people the air quality (Oxygen levels) can be affected, so we monitor this at all times during our tours, I can happily confirm that the oxygen levels in the Victoria Tunnel are a perfect 21.9% oxygen. To accommodate those visitors who prefer not to wear masks (for personal or health reasons) our fantastic team of guides have been given the option to decide on the tour to allow those visitors to come on their tour. I am sorry that you decided not to come and see for yourself how well our other visitors have enjoyed their tours as displayed in the other Excellent Reviews on this site.
