Long and high old wall near the China Town. At the first view you see old wall with turrets (?), after that you look on left and right and think "it is long, big, i haven't been on Great Wall of China, but i think its smaller version of that". Nice suprise as attraction

It's a nice spot to walk around and have a look but the castle is very small and not worth it paying to go inside .even though the walk around the castle was nice

The town wall is, with the castle, what remains of Medieval Newcastle. It's free all year long, and the western side is flanked by a nice little park (well grass and a walkway for people). It is well integrated into the cityscape and provides a nice little walk from St James's Park / NUBS (Newcastle University Business School) towards Grainger Town and the Central Station, while being the western border of Chinatown.

I stumbled across the biggest section of Newcastle's City Walls whilst walking down Gallowgate and followed them all the way round the west side of the city centre to the station. Don't expect the completeness or grandeur of the walls in Conway or Chester but they are none the less a vivid reminder of the turbulent past of the city. There are several boards and plaques along the route that explain the history of the surviving walls and towers. I finished off my morning with a visit to the castle (down past the other side of the station) and the Black Gate and thus did all Newcastle's Medieval remains in a morning.

Its not that bad. Quite historic. The Romans built it over 2000 years ago. Anyone who loves history you will love this place.

Lengthy piece of the original town wall from the medieval era in the 13th-15th centuries. Several towers are still there and were in use for several centuries afterward. Great informational signs. Nice walk along the one side--the other is an alley in use by local businesses.

I love the city walls, they are so cool and full of history and you can even see the stains left from some of the old buildings that were built up against them, like the lead works (I think).
Its better seen on a guided tour than on your own, but on a nice day it can be a nice walk.
Last summer my friends and I decided to eat our lunch picnic style on the grass, two different people offered to sell us drugs, which was a bit disconcerting.

There are various outcrops around the centre of the old town walls and have information boards in various states of decay. Can't help feeling that somewhere else their status would be higher but here you need to know where to find them.

Being sited in such a very interesting historical city it's surprising that more isn't made of the surviving sections of Newcastle's walls, which pop up in all kinds of places. There are some display boards telling visitors a little of the history, but I've not yet found a coherent presentation. It is well worth following their course to see how much has survived.

I pass here often and recently found the lovelty sheltered seating area beneath the walls at the end of Chinatown. The walls are not accessible to climb but still give an idea of the city's past, it stretches for a 100m or so and it is worth looking at if visiting Chinatown or the nearby Blackfriars just 100m away.
