About
Discover what it was really like to spend time on both sides of the bars in our one of a kind police museum, located in the heart of Birmingham. Explore our Victorian lock-up that was built in 1891 and remained a working police cell block until 2016. Transport yourself back in time as you learn about two centuries of policing history. Find out about some of Birmingham’s most notorious criminals who were held at the Lock-up, including the real Peaky Blinders. Investigate and solve crimes in our forensics lab and follow our Lock-up mouse trail that’s been designed for younger detectives. Get hands on and join in the fun by taking part in our interactive displays, dress up in our police uniforms or take your very own mugshot. There’s so much for you to discover at the museum, including a real police box, police motorcycles, a life size police horse, pictures and memorabilia. It’s a great day out for all, so round up your family and friends and be part of policing history.

- Mark P2 contributionsLovely staffStaff are very welcoming from the offset of walking through the door till you go through to gift shop at the end. Some very interesting artifacts along with commentary. You get a real feel for what it was like as you go through the old custody cells.Visited October 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 January 2023
- tahnee902017Milton Keynes, United Kingdom6 contributionsVery accessible for the visually impairedI love history and find the history of policing particularly fascinating. This museum is well laid out, highly informative, and a must-see for anyone visiting Birmingham. As a visually impaired person, I also found the museum VERY accessible. The text on the information boards was in clear, easy-to-read font and of a decent size. Each room was well lit with careful consideration given to ease of mobility for the visually impaired.Visited July 2022Written 24 January 2023
- Kevin DNottingham, United Kingdom919 contributions10/10 Top MuseumReally enjoyed our visit to this delightful and informative museum. The staff and volunteers were very helpful, and it was interesting listening to some of their experiences. The museum is over 3 floors and disability friendly with lifts. I'm not going to give too much away, there are a lot of hands on things to do, including dressing up! Take time to read the Policing Timeline, so many interesting facts that you won't know about. I would say it's suitable for children from around 7 and above, there is a lot of reading and listening to take in, however, taking younger shouldn't stop the parents enjoying their visits. I recommend visit the website to get a full understanding of what you will experience and enjoy. 10/10 I would highly recommend a visit especially on rainy days.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 March 2023
- Edmund_Q_FentibleBirmingham, United Kingdom46 contributionsAn arresting few hours.Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. It was built the central "Lock-up" for those awaiting charging and trial in the adjacent law courts. Now it forms a museum dedicated to the history of the West Midlands force and it's predecessors. Allow about 2 hours or so to get around.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 March 2023
- HW31Dudley, United Kingdom160 contributionsInteresting visitInteresting first visit to the museum, the building is really impressive and entering through extremely thick, secure doors is atmospheric. Spread over three floors a lot of the cells are open containing either audio descriptions, images, exhibits, displays or interactive games. Provides a history of the West Midlands and not just Birmingham which is good, the timeline exhibit was really interesting to see how quickly (or slowly) things changed Staff and volunteers were helpful and informative without being pushy. It was very quiet when we visited - would thoroughly recommend.Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 29 March 2023
- Battybird72Lichfield, United Kingdom15 contributionsA fascinating holing jail in the centre of the cityWe visited this museum alongside a visit to the Coffin Museum. We easily spent 90 minutes there, nipping in all of the cells and reading the information/fiddling with the exhibits. The volunteers were plentiful and offered lots of stories about the holding jail. We visited midweek when it was relatively quiet so we could chat to the staff at length, but could imagine it may be different when it's very busy. All in all, coupled with visits to other attractions in the area, this is a must-do to add to your list. Thanks to all of the friendly, helpful staff there 🙂Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 March 2023
- suty126 contributionsGreat for adults and kidsWent with 10yr old son. He really enjoyed finding the clues and trying to work out 'who done it' and fingerprints. After we got over the initial scared of heights/holes in floor🙈 the volunteers were great and approachable. I loved showing him around where I used to work (Lloyd house) etc!Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 3 June 2023
- Adventurer.NicSouth Yorkshire, United Kingdom44 contributionsMUST SEE attractionI've attended talks (inc one by local legend Carl Chinn MBE), a ghost hunting event and a fantastic murder mystery night at the museum plus the exhibits and displays are fascinating. A visit to the museum is an absolute MUST if you have a few hours spare in Central Birmingham. It makes a great experience with kids too.Visited May 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 22 July 2023
- Imogen F30 contributionsGreat Museum!Great museum. Self guided. Lots of information - large written info boards in almost every room/cell, audio recording that you could play, interactive features like the forensic trail on bottom floor and interactive investigation at back of middle floor with holographic videos and computerized clue puzzles. Everything was accessible for kids and adults (including dress up items!) but wasn't childish. Tuck shop was small but reasonable and great for a quick snack and drink. Took our family of 4 adults 1 1/2 hours to go round and see/do everything.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 2 August 2023
- androb18Biddulph, United Kingdom34 contributionsVery enjoyable museumWe visited on Saturday 19th Aug, it's a brilliant museum, it may not be huge but there's so much history to read and see. The staff were excellent, they couldn't do enough for you. They all knew so much about the museum and it was really interesting listening to them. We Highley recommend this museum. Thank you especially to the lady we were talking to on the bottom floor at the cafe, so sorry we didn't get your name, but we could have listened to you all day.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 August 2023

Such an interesting place with lots of fascinating exhibits not only about Birmingham police but those from surrounding cities aswell . The receptionist on arrival was lovely. I would have loved to have been able to go through the tunnel into the court next door 😂

We really enjoyed our visit to the West Midlands Police Museum. It is housed in the old custody cell building, not unlike a mini prison with 3 floors. Really well laid out with cells having a ‘theme’, all displays being of an excellent standard. Staff were very helpful and knowledgable. Thoroughly recommend.

Found this gem of a museum on a recent visit to Birmingham. The whole place has lots of information and memorabilia about the police, their work, and how policing has changed over the years. It is staffed by some very knowledgeable and enthusiastic volunteers. It is reasonably priced and well worth a visit.

We were stuck for doing things in Birmingham and came across this museum. It was a really good choice. The prison is well curated with cells made up to represent how they were used. There is a lot of history and social history described in other rooms and lots of exhibits
The volunteers were really fantastic. They had so much to share and they were so enthusiastic. we had a really good time visiting this museum

The tour around the museum during the Macabre Museum evening was very well conducted. All of the talkers had some very interesting facts about cases that are not quite as well documented in the news. Overall, an amazing evening! Well done all involved!

Is it wheelchair accessible?
StewartEm
Wolverhampton, UK29 contributions
Yes as far as I could see, but I'm not a wheelchair user. There's a modern lift to all floors and a wheelchair accessible toilet.
Wheelchair entry is up the side in Coleridge Passage.
Details of accessibility are on their website under the visit tab. Sorry TripAdvisor won't let me add the url. The website is museum.west-midlands.police.uk
I would give them a call on 0121 609 1700 if you've got any specific requirements.
Enjoy your visit, it's an interesting place with helpful staff.
