On this occasion I took a group of students to visit the Shababs restaurant in the Balti Triangle in Birmingham. The visit started with a presentation and then a visit to an Indian sweetshop. We were then treated to a Balti demonstration in the restaurants kitchen. Finally we all dined in the restaurant and students were given the opportunity to order anything from the menu and all dishes came with a fresh Nan. The students thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. We were all sent off with a Balti recipe and a Indian sweet to try. A fantastic afternoon had by all. Many thanks to Andy and Anna for their hospitality.

We arranged a Jewellery Quarter Tour with Anna as part of our business birthday celebrations. We needed quite a bespoke tour as we only had a limited amount of time available, and Anna was very flexible and accommodating, using her wealth of JQ knowledge and contacts to provide us with the perfect afternoon. On the day of the tour, Andy was enthusiastic from the off and imparted some fascinating nuggets of Jewellery Quarter history about all the locations we visited or passed along the way. The craftsmen that we met were a real inspiration, dedicated to their art and passionate about ensuring the traditional ways of working don’t get lost in the passing of time. Our tour ended with a fantastic afternoon tea at The Hive Bakery, once again arranged by Anna, where the sandwiches and scones were plenty and tasty. We enjoyed it so much that we are returning The Hive for our next meeting. If you are looking to do something a little bit different from either a business or personal perspective, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Anna and Andy. It was a pleasure to deal with them from start to finish.

This is the Second time we have used Andy from Alternative Tours for our Shabab Balti visit. He thoroughly engages the students with his great knowledge of the origins of Balti dish. And the food is great. I’d highly recommend it for any small school reward/citizenship/history trip.
