About
Part of the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, this Victorian building is so named since it was once occupied by the main gas company in the city and the place where local people went to pay their gas bills.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My wife and I enjoy the work of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and were looking forward to our visit to the exhibition. We were not disappointed!
There is a strong selection of PRB major works and artists, some of which come from the collection of Birmingham Art Gallery.
Lesser known artists, especially females, are well represented.
There are examples of textiles, drawings, ceramics, jewellery and stained glass as well as other work from the period.
The audio guide is free and informative.
We visited the cathedral on our way back to take in the beautiful Burne-Jones stained glass, on show after its renovation.
Well worth your time. Give yourself a treat.

I pencilled this into the plans for a 2 day break in the city with my children (8, 10 and 13) as a time filler if needed, yet it turned out to be the highlight of our break. At only £10 for a family ticket, it was wonderful value - a truly fascinating exhibition, with plenty of information about Emett, along with lots of his 'marvellous machines', all of which do actually move. The rest of the (free) museum is well worth a look around too, and the Edwardian Tearoom is a beautiful oasis of peace, with delicious cakes ideal for a light snack (and there's 10% off with the Emett tickets). My children actually asked to go back the next day, unfortunately our travel plans didn't allow, but if we're in the area again before the exhibition ends, we'll definitely return. Oh, and I mustn't forget to mention that there are £1 coin operated lockers at the Gas Hall entrance, so you don't have to carry heavy bags/coats etc around with you, makes for an even more relaxing experience.

Excellent exhibition thoroughly enjoyed by my grandchildren. I felt that £6.50 for adults and £5.50 for 3 years and upwards made it a little expensive, especially as we were there for not much over an hour but there were lots of things for the children to do.

Fascinating Exhibition of Mechanical Paraphernalia. A exhibition and insight into one mans passionate description and obsession of life, within a city, a city, who's roots are deeply embedded in its manufacturing and mechanical past, a excellent opportunity to view the UK's second city from this Unique viewpoint. Rowland was quite a fellow, Marvellous Machines indeed.
And the Children loved it!

£6.50 for an adult and £5.50 for a child - the content of the exhibition does not justify the admission price. There are much better ways to spend your time and money in Birmingham!

Went to this exhibition twice. I was only vaguely aware of Emett's work. It was interesting to see everyone walking around with a smile on their face as they watched the mechanical pieces. I particularly liked the 'diving figure' - so amusing.
It was so good I went back for a second visit and took the grandchildren.

We visit the main Birmingham art gallery often, but last year we found this place just round the corner from the main entrance. The exhibition was for art faker John Myatt. Very interesting, and all for free.
Shall certainly check around the corner in future.

Loads to see in this exhibition and well worth the £5 entry fee. :-)
This is the second exhibit we have seen at the Gas Hall and we have always been impressed.

Fantastic day out in my favourite city. Had to see dippy. Last time was a few years in London. Standing tall in the main hall.
