Charming canals, an escape from the hustle and bustle
So peaceful to walk alongside the canals here. We went from brindleyplace through the bustling pubs and restaurants onto the gas street basin and it was fabulous. The little bridges connecting each side are charming.

    Canal Charm
A stroll along Gas Street Basin is to walk through Birmingham's industrious heart, now reborn as a picturesque canal-side haven. With boats bobbing gently and the clink of glasses from nearby bars, it’s a scene that captures the city's unique blend of history and modernity. The towpaths offer serene walks, and the views at sunset are particularly mesmerising.

On a short break in Birmingham, we had planned to enjoy some drinks and a meal out in the city somewhere. As we were not saying in the city centre, but a little out in the suburbs, we needed to choose somewhere to walk to from the city centre. The Jewellery Quarter or Gas St Canal Basin seemed to be the two options.
We chose Gas St, but I was disappointed.
The canals are lovely, and if we'd been visiting in Spring/Summer and enjoying warmer weather, it would be a much nicer area to wander.
However, the vast array of restaurants on offer were all chains - the kind of place where you can eat anywhere else in the country. We have Wagamama, Cafe Rouge, All Bar One, Prezzo and all the rest back in our home city. I was really hoping for some character. The one pub we found was extraordinarily expensive too. It cost me £19 for a round of drinks, two beers and two non-alcoholic, and two crisps.
It left me wondering where is the real heart of Birmingham, in terms of bars/restaurants - as it defintely isn't here.

If you are a railway enthusiast you will know that Clapham Junction is one of the main railway focal points with railways meeting and heading off in different directions.

Gas Street Basin in Birmingham city centre is much like this. As a former industrial centre the canals were one of the best ways to get materials to the city and finished goods out of the city.

Canals meet here to take you to Worcester, Wolverhampton and North, Fradley and London so it would have been quite a busy location back in the day.

Nowadays it has been redeveloped and is an entertainment hub with lots of bars and restaurants nearby as well as the Sea Life Centre and Discovery Centre so it has been rejuvenated.

Well worth going to on your visit to the city.

A surprisingly short walk from the city centre (less than 10 minutes) bought us to this canal side district full of restaurants and bars. One of the more pleasant areas of Birmingham. We were there on a Saturday and the area was quite busy.

Good to see the old industrial heritage developed into a great community and tourist resource. We walked from the Mailbox, passing the BBC building and the old canal buildings, looking at the plaques and maps on the way on a very sunny day. We took a few photos and noted the recent addition of a "possible Banksy" painting on a wall.

What a great job they've done on restoring this area of the city and giving back an important part of the industrial past. We walked from the basin both ways to the Mailbox and then to the Roundhouse and Farmer's Locks to get different perspectives. There were boats moored and using the canals, boat trips, walkers, joggers and visitors. There are also places to eat. You can cross over via a number of footbridges to get different views.

Picturesque initially and made a nice change from the surrounding tower blocks. But two things to be aware of. The paths are very slippery in the rain so not good if you are unsteady on your feet. And it’s quite dirty, with rubbish strewn around. Perhaps we caught it on an off day.

The canal paths are interesting and in places have historic buildings. I was expecting the area to be considerable bigger and not so commercial, most of the restaurants are chains.

MAILBOX is just a small shopping mall. With some chain restaurants outside.

Okay if passing through. Probably better in the summer.

It's always been historic, this near-mythical thing called Gas Street Basin. Back in the 1970s it was quite run down and very trad in fact and feel, so much so that emerging into Broad Street was a culture shock.
Now it's tidied up, well lit, safe, well visited. there are very modern buildings contrasting with the old. Narrowboats abound. It has a charm and there's history still there.
