A mindboggling post-lockdown experience
Jun 2021
Ikon is an outstanding contemporary conceptual art gallery (see the other reviews). This review relates specifically to the current COVID/lockdown experience, which was a sensory and intellectual overload, in a good way.

Ikon is operating a slick and unfussy pandemic response. You have to book in advance on the web site, which is still free, but you have to choose in advance when you're going to come. It was always a good idea to check their website before travelling to avoid visiting during a refit or stuff you already know you don't like.

On arrival we were immediately welcomed and our tickets checked. Staff were helpful but unintrusive throughout and wore masks at all times. The galleries were quiet (which was lovely) and this is actually a great time to visit. People come in to free galleries to get out of the rain, no fun for them or me, but currently that doesn't happen and it's all rather nice.

The content was extremely varied and challenging. After over a year of artistic starvation I found this a bit overwhelming. I didn't know where to look! It seems I've got used to just one place to look (a screen), whereas a gallery like Ikon is coming at you from every angle. Pretentious conceptual art never tasted so good. After an hour I was mentally exhausted, it was quite amazing.

I was a bit disappointed that Martin Creed's brilliant singing lift is out of bounds to the public at the moment, but don't worry, there's some other auditory craziness in the staircase to make up for it.

If you're missing your fix of contemporary art, go to Ikon. There are a few other galleries which are this interesting, but they're all in global megacities and that's really not where I want to be in a pandemic. Right now, Ikon is about as good as I dare get.

Beautiful building.

Although I never visited the Ikon Gallery I was absolutely impressed with the look of the building.
My twin brother Stephen and I were heading to The Figure Of Eight Pub and passed Ikon Gallery, I took a few photos and while enjoying a bottle of Devils Backbone Brewing Co "ipa " in the pub I checked on the origins of the building, it turns out that this building housing the gallery was constructed in 1877 by architectural firm Chamberlain & Martin as Oozells Street School , the architecture looks awesome, a beautiful red brick facade ,if you walk to Margaret Street, the School Of Art Building is very similar as it was constructed by the same architectural firm
It was granted Grade II listed building status in 1981 and with the regeneration of Brindleyplace in the 1980's and 1990's was converted to Ikon Gallery in 1998 .
I love the look of the building, Victorian architecture is a particular favourite of mine, very photogenic, makes for some great photographic opportunities, its a buildings easy to locate on Oozells Square, most definitely well worth a visit if you're in the area.

A neat and attractive gallery with changing shows.

We enjoyed a short visit to the Ikon gallery where there were 2 exhibitions on 2 separate floors. The gallery is well laid out with plenty of space and light and there is a shop and cafe as well. It is well worth a visit.

A specialist gallery but impressive
Jan 2020
I visit the gallery by accident , my initial thought was the building was a restaurant cafe but I was pleasantly surprised to find a small but impressive gallery offering small exhibits but all very provocative. On my next visit to Birmingham I will call in to see what is on offer!

Each to there own so the average rating is a personal one. Nice gallery and worth a visit regardless. Personally the lift is my favourite bit both from architectural and engineering viewpoints!

Nice free gallery
Jan 2020 • Couples
We have visiting the Ikon Gallery and we thought it was okay. A bit small, so there were just two different exhibitions (one on each floor). The exhibitions on show when we went weren’t our favourite, but the gallery is free. The gift shop has loads of interesting books, definitely recommend have a browse!

Visited by accident, just walking past, but so glad I did. The turret room was a gem with the animation happening at the time. Laughed out loud, loved the soundtrack. Will come again

NIce glass lift - but not a lot of art on display
Oct 2019
Disappointing. I'm really sorry to be so negative about this attractive and free gallery but the art by Barry Flannigan is not accompanied by any significant explanation. So I'm left to wander around looking at some repetitive black hare sculptures and bits of old rope, cloth and sandbags. This is pretty unimaginative and unskilled. Many GCSE students would do better. There was a 10 min film about casting his sculptures fronted by an earnest young woman describing the processes in detail. Even this was dull, because there was no video of the actual activities just her talking in an empty studio. Not difficult these days to take footage at a convenient moment and edit it in.

Continues to offer amazing free exhibitions
Sep 2019
I have been a regular visitor to the Ikon gallery since I was at school, and it is always a source of inspiration. The building is beautiful and unusual and the quality of art and the variation they show are always brilliant. I love the tower room the most because it is such a small space but the art pieces transform it (for example the last time I went the room was full of salt up to the windows! Free art is something to be encouraged so I will keep getting the singing lift to the top floor exhibition room :)
