The coffin works is a museum that showcases the skills of the people who make embellishments for coffins and talks about the subject of death in a sensitve way.

Went to Birmingham with my husband and friends, and made a special trip through Birmingham, to visit the coffin works. Unfortunately, they were closed, with no real information given on the website, or on their premises. All it said was "Closed until at least the 1st of May 2020", which of course is understandable in the current climate, but surely you could update your website or answer phone service to reflect that three months later, you're still closed?! Very disappointed.

Thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately we have had to place all but one of our four staff members of furlough since March, and this has resulted in one person doing four peoples' jobs remotely and under very difficult circumstances, while trying to preserve the museum and ensure it can open again. During this period we have never advertised that we were open, but as we have not been in the building, we have been unable to update signs and phone messages. I apologise for the inconvenience caused, but we're disappointed that you didn't try to email us either before, or after your visit, to provide us with the opportunity to address your questions and complaints before putting it on this public forum. Our business relies on goodwill more than ever and we would hope for understanding during a very trying period. We are pleased to say that we will be reopening next month, largely as a result of the hard work of this staff member. We appreciate that we are in the minority here, as many small sites are struggling to reopen and are having to unfortunately make redundancies. We'd very much like to invite you to visit once we open our doors on 30th October. Our online booking system will be made 'live' once again on 30th September, and although you're not local to Birmingham, we would like you to experience the museum. If you ever have any trouble booking, please feel free to contact me personally using sarah@coffinworks.org or via newmanbrothers@coffinworks.org. Best wishes and stay safe, Sarah

Actually, it's much more interesting than it sounds - just about the only thing that they did not make was ... coffins! The fixtures, fittings and everything else associated with a coffin were added here. It's just an insight into the working lives of ordinary people from not that long ago.
