Went with a large group from all over the country and everyone said the same thing - fascinating! Carl Chinn is as knowledgeable as he is engaging. He educates with great passion and made the evening informative and enjoyable.

This is a shameless case of cashing in on the superb tv series. £70 per couple to sit in a scruffy room in a pub and listen for an hour plus of waffle and a sales pitch to buy Carl Chinn’s books. Flimsy content and thin on fact. You do learn that the Old Crowne isn’t as old as claimed and didn’t use to be a pub, that the iconic images from the tv series are from Liverpool, and that the razor blade in the cap is fiction. It could be so much better. The only props are 3 black and white photos on the table - a picture of a pub in Small Heath (now closed), a random picture of people at a race course in the 1920s ( the bookie is wearing an RNR Captain’s uniform and a non uniform hat. It’s clearly a costume but we are told that they used to wear there uniforms with pride - so he this unknown guy was the equivalent rank of army Colonel?). This could be so much better. What about full size pics of the Shelby gang or people in PB costume? The host kept on about his pride in being a Brummie, so why not do something which Brummies can be proud of. People travel long distances for this tour. It’s poor and has little to do with the tv series.

Dear Simon461 we are disappointed that you did not enjoy the event with us on Sunday, all the more so given the five-star ratings that the overwhelming majority of our 757 reviewers have given us. You mention that you would have liked full size pics of the Shelby gang or people in Peaky Blinder costume and that the tour has little to do with the TV series. Well, our events are not about the series or the fictional Shelby Gang. As we make clear on our website, we focus on the real gangs that terrorised the racecourses of England in the 1920s and their real gang leaders, and also on the story of the real Peaky Blinder gangs of the 1890s and early 1900s. Finally, we are rather puzzled by you stating that you sat in a scruffy room in a pub. Our venue at the Old Crown is a listed building dating from the late fifteenth century and it has recently been refurbished sympathetically and at great expense in what has been praised as a stunning makeover..
