Great guinness.
Sep 2020 • Friends
My twin brother Stephen and I were hitting some of the pubs along Digbeth and decided to drop into The Big Bulls Head Pub,a really good pub.
I loved the look of this traditional pub,a solid wood serving bar dominates the main room, eclectic decor and furnishings including etched glass features, vintage beer brand mirrors and plenty of seating options spread throughout this pub, a really good pub to chill out in.
We were here on a Wednesday afternoon, greeted warmly by a very pleasant member of the staff,we gave our details of name and phone number to assist with the governments track and trace system and then sanitised our hands and ordered a guinness each, these were served in excellent condition, we just kicked back and took in the great pub we were in.
My guinness was absolutely superb, a thick, creamy and most importantly iced cold guinness bursting with taste and very easy to drink, its hardly surprising this pub is so popular with guinness this good.
We both really enjoyed our guinness in here and although our visit was only fleeting for a first time visit to here we had a great time.
The Big Bulls Head Pub is easy to locate along Digbeth .
Opening hours are;
Monday to Wednesday, 7am till Midnight.
Thursday to Sunday, 7am till 2am.
A great pub, most definitely well worth a visit if you're in the area.

I'm Giving it Five!

The Big Bull's Head in Digbeth is a cosy little pub in Birmingham's Irish Quarter. It's not the most logical choice of venue if you're just passing through the city centre, as the location on Digbeth High Street seems a bit of a jaunt. Having said that, it's really not hard to reach when you understand the way, and I can see that the venue is especially handy for Birmingham's coach station.

The pub doesn't exactly beckon you inside, but it had a fresh lick of paint a while back and it feels very much like an Irish boozer. I would say it exudes quiet hospitality, and it's certainly for drinkers because there's plenty of decent Guinness on tap. I have to admit that I wasn't there for the beer this time. All I wanted was a cup of tea and some pub grub in the snug. I like pubs which don't demand that you drink beer.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food because I asked for a ham baguette and, though they didn't have one pre-made, one of the pub's super-friendly chefs made it from scratch. The bread was warm and crispy, the ham thick and shaggy - the condiments were lovely, and he provided a side salad with some crips. It was also full of what tasted to me like fresh butter. Simple, but effective. Also, I've paid a lot more for 'fancy' food in this city which just didn't do it for me.

I'm generally braced for disappointment when eating out, but this time I was in pub heaven. I'm easy to please when it comes to food, but I can tell immediately when things aren't right. This WAS right!

Prices are very reasonable when compared to most of Digbeth's slightly dubious 'hipster' cafes, and the Big Bull's Head also does early breakfasts - though I've yet to try one. I hear that the venue sometimes hosts live Irish music, which is as it should be in that part of town. I might drop by for a roast dinner soon. Why not? I bet it's a good one.

The rating is an average score from 4 people. Steak was good but lacked flavour. Weak pepper sauce. Mixed grill steak a bit tough, but overall was good value with the rest of the mixed grill. Chilli Salmon was very nice. Scampi was adequate chips ok.
Puddings were lovely. Cocktails were delicious and good value 2 for 7.50. Good service FRIENDLY staff.
Worth a visit for quick bite.

Newly renovated rooms, quiet and comfy. Great bar and friendly staff. There is off road parking for a few cars and it is only a 15 minute walk to the bullring and market. We felt safe walking around this area

Cracking Pub An Eats. IGNORE The Exterior, Go In, Eat, Drink, ENJOY.

We called in here as the food was recommended by their rival just up the road, the Kerryman!!
They had a better bitter in the K, Worthington in the Big, often a prob. to change bitters after a couple. Any way, we looked at the menu, I ordered the turf an surf, £11.95, upgraded the rump to sirloin for a quid!?!!!, my friend had the mixed grill £12.95.
Now the pub is THE and I mean THE most unprepossessing place from the outside, tatty run down, looks almost shut. The original mainly Victorian interior is absolutely banging apart from the uncomplimentary colour scheme, amateur hour big time an I'm sorry to say it 'cos all the staff are brilliant, absolutely brilliant salt of the earth folks, you could not meet more genuine and nicer folks.
when our snap came out - after great talking to locals, all friendly and great , we were gobsmacked. My mate's mixed grill - Big pork chop, lamb chop, big piece of rump - they'd charge you that money for the steak alone most places - 2 sausages, bacon, mushrooms, peas, chips. I think there might have been summat else I can't remember. Unbelievable value and also it was quality not catering quality crap. Mine a bit less so but still fantastic value and - my steak, MEdium rare cooked spot on.
We also ended up here after the gig (Joe Jackson at the O2 institute see other review ) for drinks great atmosphere and we ended up.......... i'll keep the lid on that!
Verdict . This is one hell of a proper pub, old fashioned but not rough, real people, go in and see for yourself.

Proper pub, with proper food

This was my second visit here - both times on a Saturday morning.
The Big Bull Breakfast is one of the best value fry-ups I have had anywhere - and no-one bats an eyelid when it is washed down with a couple of pints.
Its not something I would do every Saturday...but the cosy back bar with its leather booth seating is as good a place as any to sit, eat, drink and chat.
Away from the city centre, it has an old fashioned feel which I hope they can keep while the area around is re-developed.
Worth seeking out if you are in Birmingham
