About
If you're looking for a truly unique day out for all the family, you can't beat Coventry Transport Museum. In the heart of Coventry city centre, this huge Museum is home to the world's largest collection of British road transport in public ownership. You'll discover the stories behind the people who made Coventry the centre of the world's motor and cycle industries, and get up close and personal with the actual vehicles that defined some of history's most important moments. The Museum is laid out as a journey through time - you'll wander 19th Century streets and discover the first bicycles, carriages and cars, then explore the first car factories and gasp as you witness their wartime destruction in the Blitz Experience. Moving through the rise and fall of the city's largest industry, you will come face to face with the world's fastest car - Thrust SSC. No where else on Earth will you find such a unique experience for the whole family.

- Jill T1 contributionA Thrust to rememberWe took 2 boys on Oct 19th (age 11 and 7) and they really enjoyed the museum exhibits but the best was the thrust sc simulation. The staff went out of their way to make it a trip to remember. A friend of our boys was nervous about going into the simulation so the staff showed what would happen to put the boy at ease. Our boys, friends and some adults experienced Thrust twice - one saying it was the best thing he had ever experienced. To round it off we were given two posters for our boys as were the other family. Five star treatment.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 19 October 2023
- Neil576Market Drayton, United Kingdom362 contributionsA wonderful trip down memory laneWhat a wonderful museum and your ticket allows you to visit as many times as you like for 12 months which makes this exceptional value. It is truly amazing the exhibits set out beautifully with information boards providing details that brings everything to life. A nostalgic experience down memory lane for older people but a great insight into the motoring pedigree of Coventry through the decades. It provides an immersive as well as educational experience the staff are great and the shop and cafe are well worth a visit. A must visit attraction.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 November 2023

The vintage sleigh ride was so nostalgic. Santa was very friendly and judged our slightly nervous child just right. It was also nicely spaced out. We didn't feel crowded or rushed. The book linking to the sleigh ride was a lovely touch and a nice surprise when we read it later. Well doneVisited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 10 December 2023
- peter c1 contributionGood day out, but!Hi, I visited CTM on 30 Dec 2023 with my grandson 4yo. We parked at the back of CTM cost £5 for 4 hours cash, card, or phone. 3 minutes walk to CTM main entrance.CTM well signed posed into city. Very good display well worth a visit. The biggest disappointment children could not climb on any of the displays. During the past year, we have visited 3 other museums London TM, RAF Cosford and Leyland TM all allowed children to explore some of the displays not all but a few which made it interesting for children. I also think areas to sit and watch videos not just stand and watch. I can recommend the Cafe for good food and value.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 31 December 2023
- Vicky IDoncaster, United Kingdom114 contributionsGreat way to spend a couple of hoursLovely museum, the lady on the front desk was so friendly and helpful. Tickets are valid for a year so if we are ever in the area again we have some where to visit. Spent a good couple of hours wandering round looking at all the different vehicles from the local area.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 13 February 2024
- TeddiursaStroud, United Kingdom33 contributionsGreat place to visitSurprisingly large museum. Stayed nearly 3 hours. Focusses mainly on Coventry produced cycles, motorcycles and cars. With the odd bus, lorry, van and military vehicle thrown in for good measure. Not forgetting the vehicles which broke land speed records! even Princess Di's mini metro. Well worth a visit.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 February 2024
- Maria K87 contributionsExpensive so get the half price ticketsAbsolutely wonderful. We spent half a day here and needed more time to get through everything. The tickets are very expensive though. They are valid for a year but that is not much use if you're only visiting for a short trip. If you go to the Herbert Museum you can get half price tickets for the transport museum (the Herbert museum is also brilliant) Also a lovely cafe with great good value lunches.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 April 2024
- Chris CCoventry, United Kingdom2 contributionsBrilliant. But where’s the exit?Undoubtedly the best museum I have ever been to. You would need to be interested in the history of Coventry, or Motor cars, or Motorcycles, or Bicycles, to appreciate it. One minor caveat. It’s so big that you need more than one visit to really appreciate it, but if you want to leave, after say an hour, it’s hard to find the exit.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 27 April 2024
- Shazad B2 contributionsNice place, bizarre context free random life size cut outs. It's a nice afternoon out and make sure you go with plenty of time to do the speed simulator. Strangely though there are these random out of context Indian guy life size cut outs places throughout. No idea why they were there which is probably why I found that unintentionally hilarious. See pics.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 May 2024
- AdventuresoftheDraperFiveBristol, United Kingdom43 contributionsGood for little people who like cars!Interesting museum - lots of cars and vehicles to see. Well laid out from early bikes to modern day - easy for kids to follow as we walked through and cars became more modern. Bloodhound/Thrust cars at the end really interesting too. Kids area to play with some toys, some interactive features on the way round. Toilets available at regular places on way round. Staff helpful and knowledgeable.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 31 May 2024

We have visited this museum as a family of 3 a good few times before they introduced admission costs.
It's a great place to wander around looking at the old vehicles and seeing how far things have come.
If you're a bit older you can also see the relatively new cars that were around when you were young, it makes you realsie how old you have become!
They also have a great section with old toy cars. Look at all the ones you once had.
The blitz section is also great.
The thrust simulator is a paid attraction simulator and maybe worth it if you haven't before.
Saying that, since I visited for free it's now £14 admission for each adult to the museum.
This is such as shame as I would have never and will never pay £35 entry plus parking plus the simulator fee.
This is a museum and I still believe museums should allow people access to history with the burden of cost from councils or government.
Education and history should not come at £14 a ticket or if you can afford it regardless of how good it is.
And from free to 14 each seemed like an excessive jump too.
I've knocked one off because of the cost but Its still a great place to see.

We were fortunate that this weekend was fee entry which was an amazing bonus
From bikes with engines to those without modes of transport over the years on show
It is well kept and follows current pandemic guidance so really reassuring.
We particularly loved the high speed information with the knex model.
Great visit for all ages.

I understand the frustrations of some guests who have found the entry charge a pain, but this was a little gem of a find on a be try rainy day! Great to see a wide variety still available, with some
Limited interactive exhibitions for children to experience too. We spent around an hour and half inside.
Staff were helpful and polite.
Be aware there are no public toilets to
Use due to restrictions- this is in conflict with what the website says!
Also I’d recommend grabbing a small bite to eat in the cafe afterward where you can also sit outside if desired!

Shocked to find that this once free and splendid museum now has an admission charge of £14 (albeit this is an 'annual pass'). I have known the place from its formative days and both benefitted from and contributed to it.I appreciate where the 'necessity' for this has come from, but I think that to go from free to such a high charge at a stroke is too much. It is also - quite frankly - insulting to all those who gave their time so freely to set the museum up. It was my reason to go to Coventry, but not any more. It looked empty too, and the shop had a massive sale on, plus a sign saying 'Shop free to enter'! Shameful.

I used to enjoy an occasional visit to the transport museum but refuse to pay an extortionate entry fee, when it used to be free!
Entry is now only free for holders of the Go Cv card but not everyone with a CV postcode is eligible to get one. I can run my business within Coventry city centre and pay quite substantial business rates to coventry city council. But because I live just outside the boundary and pay my council tax to a different council I have to pay £14 each to get in!
While this ridiculously expensive charge for entry remains, I will not set foot in this museum again!

Disgraceful !! The Santa experience was ok and the volunteers on this nice.
The main museum is clearly used to no visitors. This is a tax payer funded museum the lack of motivation and laziness of the staff was just so depressing especially off 2021 event.
We entered the museum at 4 and the lady on duty literally hounded us, no coffee cups, no child touching, then as we entered told it shuts 5!
By 4 25 we had three women following us telling us the lights would go out as we went and bullied my mother who only went to visit the 60s jaguars to leave. She's disabled and needed the lift. She then asked to get the lift up and it didn't work. The staff had shut up shop by 4.50pm. by 4.55 we were on the street.
This isn't right and is better than Coventry deserves and I will try my best to fix it. We pay for this service and it's not on they shut up shop early.

A very good value visit, (@£14 I was dubious) I was in the exhibitions for about three hours and enjoyed every minute. A great collection and well choreographed. Laid out in halls which guide you through the history of transport manufacture in Coventry from bicycle to autonomous vehicle, with an additional exhibition housing the fastest cars in the planet. Most of the information points are provided in a clear and legible format (by museum standards) which makes it easier for people with less than perfect vision. A definite must visit.

I have been before a few years ago and I have to say a lot has been invested in creating a unique museum filled to the brim with a wide range of British cars. The highlight for me was the superb 1930s collection of motor cars, the land speed record area and the Jaguar section is worth the ticket price alone. A few people are complaining about the price, but I have to say it's not justified because the effort gone into the museum is clear to see. The staff were very friendly and welcoming from the start to the finish, especially when I requested a few purchases from the shop. Speaking of the gift shop, sadly it has seen better days with very limited stock. Coventry should be very proud of this museum.

We used to visit on an afternoon and really enjoyed looking around but unfortunately the new entry charge is ridiculous.
Something that used to be free is now £35 for us to visit. I understand a small entry fee but £14 for an adult, daylight robbery!!!
I would be interested to see visitor numbers since introducing the new prices.
Our last date of visit was prior to new charges.

There is no doubt the museum has a really extensive collection and it is presented in an aesthetically pleasing way. The downside is that I don’t feel our visit represented value for money. There wasn’t anything interactive for little ones to do, and any sort of display or button that could be pressed didn’t seem to be working. So it then means you’re just walking round looking at things which can become tedious for the little ones. I think £14 is expensive for an adult admission. There are some impressive displays and vehicles there, however it’s the value for money that I can’t quite justify, when very little of what is interactive, or should be, isn’t working.

When did this start charging? We live just outside Coventry and so don’t qualify for the free pass. We are devastated as we visited every year when free but it’s far outside what out family can afford at £14 a ticket.

I believe they only started charging late last year. As you said you if live within the Coventry City Council area and have a GoCv card it free.

Would like to visit museum, but have a disabled person with me, is there any disabled bays near the museum
Written 11 August 2019
Their website says parking spaces for blue badge holders at the museum can be booked in advance by ringing 02476 234270 - why not give them a ring anyway. Don't forget that they now charge for admission which is valid for one year.

Are there any electric cars, 'cars of the future' or e-bikes on display? With explanations of their design features? My 14-year-old son is especially interested in this area of the transport industry. Are there displays about future developments in transport as well as past history?
Written 28 May 2019
Hi there, I don't think there was overly, no, it was definitely a more "through the ages" type thing but no real focus on progressive transport.
Hope that helps a little.

is there any hotels near transport museum.

There are a number of ones in easy reach including a Premier, Ibis, Ramada and lots of guest houses.
Premier Inn at Belgrade Plaza is less than a 10 minute walk away.
Hope that helps.

I would imagine there is disabled parking bays nearby but I would also warn of the bus lanes if not local to Coventry as had to appeal (successfully) against a penalty for driving in a big s lane by mistake!
