A great visit to an amazing building
Coventry Cathedral is an amazing building. It is beautiful in a mid twentieth century way and the Cathedral has an amazing ministry to the world. I went with a trip organised (brilliantly) by the Friends of Worcester Cathedral and we were hosted by the Friends of Coventry Cathedral to refreshments. We then attended a brief service of Reconciliation, well led and explained by one of the Canons, and were then taken on a tour by knowledgeable guides. The tour included the bombed out Cathedral immediately next to the new one. Everyone we encountered at the Cathedral was helpful, friendly and nice. It was a great visit for a Christian believer but even if you are not I think you would find a visit to Coventry Cathedral it beautiful, moving and and thought provoking. The only thing Coventry Cathedral lacks is a coffee/tea shop. Most of us went to the Museum opposite when our visit was over.

    Inspiring Cathedral
It was a brilliant design idea to place the new cathedral adjacent to the ruined cathedral as it made it very poignant the catastrophic effect of war. All the stained glass windows, the huge tapestry, the etched glass and the statues are so memorable. Attended Eucharist service which made for a special visit with the opportunity to hear the organ playing.

    A treat of a tour
We had a truly wonderful tour with Mary. Her knowledge was extraordinary in all areas, design, construction, cultural references and the important messages of the cathedral. All was delivered with humour and pace. Best tour like it I ever had.

    Brilliant experience!
Absolutely wonderful cathedral, and hearing 'Messiah' last night topped it all off. The performance was excellent, and the candlelight contributed to a truly atmospheric evening. Well done and lots of love to you all xxxx

A 'must-visit' if you love history - The Old and the New Juxtaposed Cathedrals
This is a must-visit if you are near Coventry. The burnt-out building is a somber reminder of Coventry history and what our parents/grandparents went through during WW2. Some fabulous art sculptures/pieces around the theme of forgiveness created a strong emotional feeling that stayed with me. The new cathedral is directly across the road from the old cathedral. Opened in 1962. A gorgeous modern Cathedral. The stained glass is definitely worth a look and underneath the main room, at the back of the Cathedral, is a great museum room that often gets overlooked.

So glad I visited this fascinating city and church
This was a real surprise ! I have been visiting cathedrals since 2016 and this one was low on my list . However I found a wonderful welcome here and lessons to be learned about forgiveness and inclusion . My guide Paul happily gave up his time to share his knowledge and enthusiasm with me . Go !
Thanks so much for your lovely review, we are glad you enjoyed learning about the unique story of Coventry Cathedral and hope to see you again in the future!

Absolutely worth a visit if you are staying near Coventry!
Our third cathedral in two weeks! We'd both wanted to visit Coventry and the opportunity came during part of our journey south via Didcot. Coventry Cathedral is awe-inspiring with the bombed out shell of the ancient building complemented with a modern building constructed between 1956 and 1962. The word that rang through my mind during our visit was 'reconciliation'. The stained glass in the new section is very modern but also very appealing - if you like Manchester Cathedral, you'll love Coventry. The staff on duty at the shop are lovely and very happy to talk about the building. Entrance is free, but donations are very welcome. I would suggest travelling to Coventry by train or park and ride as the road network is a nightmare even with a Satnav. If you choose to drive into the city, we would certainly recommend the Salt Lane multi-storey car park which is relatively new, has a good number of easily accessible spaces and ramps wide enough for most vehicles up to SUVs.
Thanks for your lovely comment, we are happy to hear you enjoyed your visit and hope to see you again!

Check out the window in the new Cathedral and the ruins of the old
This was a really interesting Cathedral, situated next door to the ruins of the older Cathedral wrecked in World War II and there is yet another more ruined Cathedral just up the road (the whole area is worth taking your time to visit, with the old church, prayer house, old houses, an old pub and a more modern museum). Even if you are not religious you cannot fail to be impressed by the stained glass windows and the architecture of the newest Cathedral. I was lucky as I was greeted on arrival by a very friendly lady who was happy to tell me about the glass window and the story behind it. It is also worth exploring all the various 'rooms' of the museum, including the basement where there is an interesting exhibition (history and religion). It is free to attend, and there are toilets on the premises. If you are looking for refreshments you will probably need to go to another nearby location, but there are plenty to choose from.
Thanks for your kind comments, we are happy to hear you enjoyed your visit and hope to see you again!

    Beautiful concrete
A spectacular space. The contrast in styles between the old and new buildings enhances how special this space is. The towering concrete walls encase the stained glass windows and the simplicity and scale of the chapels is just right

I had tickets for the Terry Hall concert at the cathedral and due to the acoustics of the building, knew that the sound would be excellent. They seemed to be a delay after the previous concert so we happily queued and to speed things up our tickets were checked and we were given wrist bands to speed up entry. Seating was spread out and there was a sit where you want policy.
Whilst I was waiting in the queue for the bar a woman spoke to me saying she never realised how beautiful the cathedral was and would definitely return, with her family to properly investigate the area, so already this concert was doing what it had set out to do and raise awareness.
The acoustics were great and Terry Hall sounded brilliant in his own unique way but during a poem he was reading, the bar staff decided to clear up all there bottles which made a racket, which Terry commented on and there were a group of women, sitting a few rows back, who had a full blown argument and never stopped talking all the way through!
I know the bar has to clear up but a more appropriate time could have been worked out and although there were plenty of helpers, no one confronted the women who were spoiling a very special and expensive night out.
I would definitely come to another event here, just need the security to man up a bit.

So sorry that the bar staff picked the wrong time to clear up and we will endeavour not to do this at a future event. I do hope that you, and the lady you spoke to, will make a return visit to discover what both cathedrals have to offer. You might also have the opportunity of a guided tour.

Spellbound by the history and tragic events.
Was given a tour by a very helpful knowledgeable lady who answered all our questions. This is definitely a place that should be on everyone's "places to visit" and would recommend accepting a tour guide to explain it all.
When finished visit the cafe downstairs and treat yourself to some of the best baking and cooking anywhere. A proper pot of tea with china cups was a real treat.

We had a good visit after seeing a recent tv programme about the building and its modern art. The shell of the old cathedral was a good contrast.
There were plenty of visitors and it is good that there is no formal charge to go in, but we felt the space seem Ed more like a museum than a place of worship.

Having wanted to visit Coventry Cathedral for a long while, it was great to finally take it all in From a historical perspective, it is known all over the world and the old remains and ruins can be looked at up close. They are preserved and there is plenty of information about the Coventry Raid to be read.

Contrast this with the new Cathedral, it is absolutely stunning. Huge, high ceiling and walls, great artwork throughout; the stained glass up and down the north and south aisles is fabulous and it smacks of modern but sensitive architecture.

All exceptional.

Our Year 6 school trip to Coventry Cathedral to take part in their educational Blitz experience was excellent. The day was very well-organised and the children thoroughly enjoyed the day but most importantly learned a great deal. Pupils were transported back to the day after the Blitz, November 15th 1940 and listened to different people speaking in role to prepare a report for Winston Churchill himself.

Everyone was completely immersed and hung on every word that was shared with about the awful night of bombing that Coventry suffered. Provost Howard was a magnificent story-teller and he held the children in rapt attention. Mrs Dingle regaled the children brilliantly and with great humour, sharing her story of the night in the shelter . She confessed her worries over her son being evacuated all from the authentic setting of her 1940's kitchen. During the day the children examined real documents for evidence and looked at real artefacts from an evacuees suitcase. They even had instructions from the groundsman on how pumps, buckets and hoses were used to try to save the cathedral and some of the children had a go at using the equipment. The highlight of their day though was singing songs in the shelter with Graham who played his banjo and squeeze box for us all to sing along with.

All in all, it was a fantastic day and we would highly recommend the experience to any school wishing to educate their pupils about the Coventry Blitz of WW2 as it was a highly informative, educational and enjoyable day.

Many thanks to the staff at Coventry Cathedral,
St Nicolas C of E Academy, Nuneaton (Year 6 Pupils and Teachers)

Absolutely fantastic visit Inside you have a massive wall of all different coloured glass & a beautiful church.
Outside there are the ruins + an underground war shelter which only costs £1 to enter. There are statues of interest, different plaques and a real sense of peace & serenity.
Would definitely visit again. Coventry is a great place to visit.

Visited both the old and new Cathedrals a couple of weeks ago with my partner and was struck by the dramatic contrast between the ruins of the original classic and the modern design of the new. We first visited the cathedral ruins – poignant and moving, a reminder of the loss and suffering of war and serving as a memorial of that awful night in 1940 when German bombs rained down for 12 hours killing 568 people, injuring many more and destroying homes and buildings. The shell of the cathedral remains, along with the spire and the tower (I believe you can go inside the tower, but at the moment, due to Covid restrictions, this was not the case). There is also a cross formed from roof beams that fell in that shape during the bombing, the Reconciliation statue, a huge metal plaque on the ground, Choir of Survivors statue, Ecce Homo statue etc. We then went to visit the new cathedral – almost stark in contrast with vast expanses of blank, grey walls interspersed with massive stained glass insets throughout . Well worth visiting both of these if you are visiting Coventry.

This really is an amazing 20th centry building. As far as cathedrals go, it may be the only one in the world which is not oriented with the altar to the east (because it's attached at right angles to the bombed original which was).
Highlights: at the entrance, look at the spectacular Graham Sutherland tapestry on the far wall, and the organ (which also sounds fantastic). Then from the tapestry end, look back at the entrance and see the wonderful etched glass window which forms a whole wall. The tall stained glass windows on the sides are great, and there are any number of additonal smaller great works of art throughout the building.
Very well worth a visit.

The old ruined cathedral is stunning (I didn’t climb the tower, but if you like stairs, it’s an option!), and then down some steps is the new modern cathedral with beautiful stained glass, and wooden spikey features that represent the crown of thorns (and look like upside down coat hangers!).

Both are huge spaces that feel very tranquil/spiritual. You can visit for free (donations are optional in the modern cathedral). They have stickers and an activity sheet for little ones. (I was tempted...!)

We had a walk round here the old bombed part had an ice rink in so could only see a small bit of it. Not much information regarding it. We then crossed over to the new cathedral which is quite good to see inside and is designed well. It is very big inside and they were setting up the stage for a play that is to be held inside.

Overall this is a good place to have a quick visit
