About
Bringing together six architectural periods, Arundells is one of the finest houses in Salisbury’s Cathedral Close, with parts of the property dating back to the 13th Century. It was acquired in 1985 by Sir Edward Heath KG MBE, Prime Minister, Statesman, sailor and musician, who bequeathed Arundells to the Charitable Foundation set up in his name following his death in 2005. Arundells is presented today as it was when Sir Edward lived here, with gifts from leaders such as Nixon, Chairman Mao and Fidel Castro sitting alongside beautiful collections of ceramics, glassware and sculpture. Arundells hosts a number of events and exhibitions throughout the year, including outdoor theatre, historical and political talks and intimate concerts. We are also available for private events and parties. Please visit our website or Facebook page for more details.

    An enlightening visit
One of best house visits we have ever done. All the volunteers were friendly and very knowledgeable, and obviously loved their jobs. To see this lovely house as Ted Heath lived in it made it special and provided insights into the less well known aspects of his life. Don’t miss this if you are visiting Salisbury

    Arundells a must see
Arundells presents a moment frozen in time--at the end of the life of former PM Ted Heath. His many and varied interests are evident throughout the house (sailing, classical music, Japanese art, etc.) and offer an insight into the life of the former PM. Each room has a volunteer docent to explain and answer questions, and each room offers a different perspective. I loved Heath's office, with its view of the back gardens; and I loved the gardens stretching down to the river. I imagine the gardens in bloom in spring would be spectacular, but even in late September, there were enough blooms to enjoy. I visited Arundells after visiting the nearby Museum, which had a collection of photos from the local newspaper; taken together, I deepened my understanding of life in England during the 20th century.

    homely stately house
Lovely to see around a house with 'recent' history, people places and events that were within living memory. This fascinating house had several inhabitants but most recently, UK's ex-prime minister, Ted Heath. Very homely and comfortable house with many of his possessions, some great photos and cartoons. Knowledgeable and unobtrusive volunteers in each room gave an extra insight. Worth a walk around the garden, down to the river (in full flow at the time of visiting, after heavy rains!)

More interesting than I thought it would be
Visited here simply because we had HHA membership (not sure I would if had to pay), and I'm so pleased we visited, far more interesting than I thought it would be. I'm of an age that I can remember Ted Heath's premiership very vividly (and Mike Yarwood's awful impressions of him), so walking into his house and seeing all the photos and memorabilia took me right back to the seventies (great decade, great music). The stewards/guides were all very informative and friendly and full of stories, and I learnt a lot about Ted for example his war record, his links with China, I was fascinated by his eclectic book collections, but I think my highlight was probably all the framed cartoons about him, some of which I remember from the day. Shocking day weather wise so never got to explore the gardens and the river bank. If you are in Salisbury, its well worth a visit, especially if you an HHA member, and Wilton House is part of HHA as well, so its a bargain

    Brilliant time at Arundells
The visit was brilliant. The staff were very friendly and full of information which was enthusiastically shared with us. The rooms on show were lovely and the information about the history of the house and Edward Heath was excellent. We learnt so much about Edward Heath, his life before, during and after his parliamentary career

Beautiful house filled with treasues and tranquil garden
Visited yesterday afternoon with a group of 33. We had plenty of time to explore the tranquil and very beautiful garden with the river running past at the bottom. The little nooks, particularly the one about Morning Cloud, were pretty and seats scattered around to take it all in. The house itself is still Sir Edward’s home, with his beautiful and varied collections depicting his various areas of expertise such as art, music and sailing, not to mention his vast knowledge of politics and world history. Such a shame we weren’t able to visit on a day when a guided tour was available as there was so much more to have learned about his life. Highly recommend a visit here, the volunteers are so knowledgable and the staff are great.

Great value for a tenner . A fascinating house and a beautiful garden with a superb view of the Cathedral.
So glad I visited Arundells. The guides were very friendly and helpful with some fascinating information about the history of the house and about Edward Heath. I am not a Tory so hesitated when I saw this after visiting the Cathedral. As others have said, it is the knowledge of the guides that adds so much to a visit to Arundells. I remember the Heath and Wilson era so I was fascinated to have a wander around the the house of Edward Heath with its interesting mementos and artwork. The wonderful garden was a bonus. It was a lovely sunny day when I went and I was the only one in the beautiful , peaceful garden . A tip - don’t turn back to face the house when exploring the garden until you reach the river. That view of the Cathedral from the river is just breathtaking and so memorable.

Wonderful place; an oasis of calm and history.
Wonderful - very special. The staff made us feel so welcome in every respect and our great thanks to the lovely and insightful guide, who even let my ten-year old daughter play on Sir Edward's piano. Gorgeous gardens too, and one had a real sense of the home of a serving and former Prime Minister.

Fascinating house for its architecture, history and collections
A lovely house which is fascinating at so many levels: its architecture and development, the collections within the house, and the life of its last owner: Sir Edward Heath. What really makes the experience are the volunteers who run the place. They are all so enthusiastic and knowledgeable and really go the extra mile to make you, as a visitor, feel welcome and leave with more than you arrived with. We would have, for example, not known that the garden had to be remodelled to prevent the IRA getting a clear shot at Heath from across the river … and so many more interesting facts. The one page information sheets for each room are good too for describing the art and other collections. Just the right about of detail to engage without overwhelming. So much interesting stuff to see from the photos of Heath with world figures to model ships made by Napoleonic prisoners of war to paintings by Winston Churchill. Definitely worth a visit.

A fascinating and beautiful house filled with interesting historical artefacts
If you are interested in history or current affairs and you are visiting Salisbury, you must visit Arundells, This beautiful house was the home of the UK Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath, and is kept in pretty much the same state as it was when he lived there. The house is filled with interesting photos of Sir Edward with other world leaders like US Presidents and Chinese leaders, and with members of the royal family, and famous musicians and artists. Look out for some charming artwork by Augustus John, and Sir Winston Churchill. There are well-informed guides in each room who are very interesting and informative to talk to. There are lots of interesting talks and music recitals that take place in the house during the year. This is the closest thing that the UK comes to a US Presidential library. There is a beautiful garden too. A must visit!

I had a horrendous day visiting this establishment.
Whilst Tony on reception graciously and humanly checked me in I proceeded to the splendour of the gardens.
I found an inner peace of tranquility befitting Lourdes or Fatima.
However, on entering the house and being welcomed by two stewards I was duly challenged in the inner draw bridge.
In front of fellow visitors I was humiliated by a third steward who demanded I remove my very small ruck sack and carry the offending article.
I questioned this and her name.
My name is steward I was curtly informed.
This is a sad repost.
You will damage the artefacts with your bag she insisted.
Kate the duty manager did not help matters and infact supported her colleague and agreed with her.
I immediately left without seeing the inside of the house totally devastated humiliated and hurt by the actions of Miss Stewart and the duty crass attitude of the duty manager.
David a fellow stewart did a fantastic job to pacify matters as did Tony but my weeks visit to Salisbury was totally ruined by Miss Steward.
Visitors be aware of the very strict regime in place in this building and hostility.

We happened to find Arundells open when with visited Salisbury Cathedral. It is a beautiful home, now in the management of trustees. It is a home filled with such interesting treasures, and memories of the very full life of Edward Heath, UK prime minister, a home that it so personal and homely. I do not know of any other homes of former prime ministers of GB where their home is open to visitors , set out just as if he was still living there. Fascinting to see so many treasures that he was given by other heads of states across the world - photographs of royalty and other heads of states that he met with, various well documented events and of course many reminders of his sailing experiences and time in the army. A beautiful garden too - and picnics are welcome. Sit and enjoy. Well worth a visit.

Ordering the exclusive private tour followed by cream tea in the gardens has to be one of my better cunning plans for a fabulous afternoon. From start to finish the whole experience is fabulous being met at the gate and then being shown round each individual room and having the time to question and look at the delicate artefacts hear the stories! To be able to just soak up the history is amazing. The whole of the house has history oozing, and stories, pictures newspapes etc ….you go “wow” “my gosh I never realised” on so many occasions. The house is very much alive and the staff and tour guides really do bring it to life. The best way to end the tour was to have an exquisite locally produced cream tea under the shade of a delightful tree in the amazing gardens. After looking at the house and seeing the photographs you have a sudden reality check that you two have stood walked and sat why are so many famous people have already been. If you are looking for a unique and bespoke tour and look no further and speak to the team and organise your amazing trip.

Went on a Tuesday with HHA tickets but the man on guarding the front door was so rude stating HHA paid membership was not valid. Beware of this if you travel miles to visit. Good job the NT house across the Green was staffed with better more friendly folks.

I felt it important that I responded to your review if, for no other reason, than to allay any concerns amongst other members of the Historic House Association (HHA) who might like to visit Arundells and who may be confused or perturbed by your comments. The HHA website clearly and correctly states that free entry to Arundells is granted to all HHA members from Friday to Monday inclusive during the open season but not on other days of the week. This information is also provided on the Arundells website. I am sorry that you say you found our receptionist to be rude and unhelpful. He wholeheartedly refutes your assertion that he was either of these things. He has told me that he simply informed you, with apologies, that free access for HHA members was not available for guided tours of the house on Tuesdays, that he would be very happy to book you spaces on a guided tour of your choice, but that the charge of £13 would be payable in full.

A visit to this charming house is recommended if you have any interest in UK politics of the last half-century. Ted Heath represented the left-leaning side of the Tory party and famously did not get on at all with Thatcher. Here at Arundells, you can see laid out in the form of books, object d'art, memorabilia, decor etc. what made the man tick. What a lovely house! And just as it was (with one or two minor exceptions) when he passed away, back in 2005, having lived there for over twenty years.
On the day I went, there were plenty of well-informed and chatty volunteers on hand to talk about the rooms, their contents and the man himself. The garden too is a delight, although not without reminders of the scourge of our modern day, the terrorist threat.
I recall talk of Heath, Wilson, Thatcher etc etc back in the day, on the radio and the television news, so it was a real pleasure and very informative to spend a couple of hours pottering around this fine example of living history.

We arrived a few minutes after 3:30pm, which is the cut off time for access to the house as it currently closes at 4:00pm. However, one of the senior volunteers, Ivan, escorted us on a short tour in any event when he found out how far we had travelled. The contents and personal belongings of Edward Heath were very interesting and Ivan was highly informative. We could have spent at least double the time there had we arrived earlier.

Excellent historic home. Extremely well maintained with brilliant guides who are knowledgable and friendly. Very much enjoyed my visit and I will recommend it highly to anyone visiting Salisbury. It is very easy to combine the visit to Arundells with Salisbury Cathedral. It should be promoted more strongly as a top tourist attraction as it is well worth the money and time.

Arundells is the former home of Ted Heath and houses a fabulous collection of photographs, paintings, Heath’s personal effects and a wonderful collection of gifts from foreign dignitaries and items he collected on his travels. I particularly liked the monkey king wallpaper. This really is a very interesting house and it is possible to have a really thorough look at all of the interesting artefacts on display. The garden is also lovely with a beautiful partial view of Salisbury cathedral. However, what really makes a visit to Arundells so fabulous are the wonderful guides. They are incredibly knowledgable, friendly and approachable and clearly love sharing their passion for this home with the visitors.

Arundells is a gem of a house. There’s something for everyone- amazing art with a whole dining room full of John Piper, sailing memorabilia including a restored part of the hull of his boat - Morning Cloud, photos of all the great, good, and not so good he met during his amazing life, gifts from all over the world including stunning hand painted Chinese wallpaper, ceramics, satirical cartoons.
The gardens run down to the river with a view across the water meadows where Constable painted.
Absolutely wonderful!

We visited the house on a beautifully sunny (but cold) day. Having at first walked past the ticket office we backtracked and bought our tickets. The staff were, without exception, friendly and informative and had a vast knowledge of the exhibits. The artwork was extensive and the corridor with the cartoon artwork was amazing. The view out the front windows to the Cathedral was amazing and out the back windows over the gardens was beautiful.

It was a very pleasant way to spend an hour, and we learned a lot about Edward Heath into the bargain. Well worth a visit!
