About
Bringing together six architectural periods, Arundells is one of the finest houses in Salisbury’s Cathedral Close, with parts of the property dating back to the 13th Century. It was acquired in 1985 by Sir Edward Heath KG MBE, Prime Minister, Statesman, sailor and musician, who bequeathed Arundells to the Charitable Foundation set up in his name following his death in 2005. Arundells is presented today as it was when Sir Edward lived here, with gifts from leaders such as Nixon, Chairman Mao and Fidel Castro sitting alongside beautiful collections of ceramics, glassware and sculpture. Arundells hosts a number of events and exhibitions throughout the year, including outdoor theatre, historical and political talks and intimate concerts. We are also available for private events and parties. Please visit our website or Facebook page for more details.

- SeanWatford, United Kingdom1 contributionWonderful and informative teamQuite possibly the nicest team I’ve ever met. They were really friendly, informative and kind. We went for a brief visit, to learn about Heath’s life and home but came out knowing much more than we expected, thanks to the wonderful staff. What was a side part of our visit to Salisbury ended up becoming the highlight. Would recommend to anybody visiting.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 April 2023
- BundyClubBundanoon, Australia541 contributionsA good look at Ted Heaths TreasuresA visit to Arundells is well worth the effort. Most of the staff are enthusiastic volunteers and they are in every room to unobtrusively provide information should you want it. The house is full of Ted Heaths Nic-nacs collected over his life. It’s interesting to see the number of items he was gifted. The gardens are beautiful and are recommended to visit, walk along the way down to see the confluence of the Avon and Nader Rivers.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 May 2023
- Linda Teague10 contributionsOne of the most wonderful experiences in SalisburyMy husband and I were absolutely mesmerised by Ted Heath's home and garden. The staff volunteers were enthusiastic and an absolute joy to chat with as they were amiable and knowledgeable about his well-lived life. The house has a wonderful display of Heath's yachting memorabilia, music career, and much else. The whole house held one's interest. We could have spent much longer there than the time we had available to us. Indeed, we immediately ordered a copy of his inspiring autobiography. We would highly recommend it!Visited May 2023Written 20 May 2023
- Xia H1 contributionBeautifulVery interesting house is just in front of Cathedral, back through a long garden to river bank. Lots of exhibits about China connection. Historical photos with world leaders. The volunteers are knowledgeable and tell interesting stories. Very good value entry with 2 in 1 garden voucher.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 10 June 2023
- drkiki2015Washougal, Washington483 contributionsPM Heath's beautiful homeThe former home of PM Edward Heath, this stop is definitely worth a visit. It is located across the street from Salisbury Cathedral. There is a nominal admission fee, but the house is unique and a very personal commentary on PM Heath. The gardens are phenomenal and extend a long distance from the house. Walking back to the house, the spire of the cathedral (tallest in England) becomes part of the landscape.Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 11 June 2023
- Kevin N2 contributionsGreat house and incredible guides! What makes this visit so special and the guides. The day we went there were 4 which is incredible for a fairly small building. They were all extremely engaging, knowledgeable and enthusiastic which was great the more so as they must get asked the same questions multiple times a day. The house itself is very interesting but as I say the guides make it special!Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 July 2023

Interesting insights into our former PM which for me made him seem a lot more of a rounded human being with many admirable traits. The staff/ volunteers clearly love working there and make visitors feel hugely welcome and valued. Really worth visiting.Visited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 16 July 2023

Arundells presents a moment frozen in time--at the end of the life of former PM Ted Heath. His many and varied interests are evident throughout the house (sailing, classical music, Japanese art, etc.) and offer an insight into the life of the former PM. Each room has a volunteer docent to explain and answer questions, and each room offers a different perspective. I loved Heath's office, with its view of the back gardens; and I loved the gardens stretching down to the river. I imagine the gardens in bloom in spring would be spectacular, but even in late September, there were enough blooms to enjoy. I visited Arundells after visiting the nearby Museum, which had a collection of photos from the local newspaper; taken together, I deepened my understanding of life in England during the 20th century.

Forget which political persuasion you sway to, this property (Edward Heath's home) is a gem to visit. Full of interesting political history as well as exploring his hobbies and interests, he lived a full and varied life. IN the words of Michael Cockerell, the BBC journalist, he was indeed 'A Very Singular Man'.
Highly recommended, you won't be disappointed. As a bonus if you have a Gardener's World card, you can avail yourselves of the buy 1 get 1 free offer, meaning you can get in for the ridiculously cheap price of £4.50 each.

If you’re visiting Salisbury do not miss this. An absolutely fantastic experience.
The home of former PM Ted Heath. The house still has a lived in feel rather as if Mr Heath were still in residence. The interior tells the story of Heath’s life. Obviously his political career but also his love of music, his sailing career and his early years of military service. A truly fascinating insight in to a multifaceted man.
If that is not enough, the house and gardens alone are stunning. I can’t recommend a visit highly enough.

A really lovely experience visiting the house formerly occupied by Sir Edward Heath. Excellent, knowledgeable tour guides and a beautiful garden to the rear. I loved the music room and the display of political cartoons from Sir Edward's era in politics was, in my opinion outstanding.

Whatever your political persuasion visiting the former home of Edward Heath is a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. The house is beautiful and the gardens worth spending time in. The guides will enhance your visit no end, so take the time to talk to them. Many of them knew “Ted” personally and have fascinating tales to tell. Sadly, we did not allow ourselves enough time to fully appreciate where we were, though my wife did get to play his Steinway Piano. I look forward to returning to do the house and gardens justice next time.

We’d be visiting with an 8yr old and wondering if the guided tour on Tuesdays would hold their attention?

We did a self-guided tour. There were docents in every room to answer questions. The grounds are very large and parklike so with a parent, taking a child out if necessary should be easy. I doubt the history of the resident would be of interest to most 8 year olds. We did not see any children there in May.

I had a private tour for me and my mate. Cost £12 each. We were lucky with the tour guide.
