I thought I was being smart in avoiding a long uncomfortable bus ride from London to Stonehenge by taking the train. And that part was fast and easy. But once you get to the train station in Salisbury, the only way to get to Stonehenge is to take this bus (or I suppose a taxi).

We timed our train to arrive by 9:30, in order to make the first bus at 10:00 am. However, the driver kept waiting for more people to show up, in order to fill up the bus, so we didn't actually leave until 10:15. Then when we finally got to Stonehenge, he dropped us off with very little instructions on where to go. As a result, we ended up joining a long line with the rest of the guided tour bus groups. After spending 10 minutes in the wrong line, we realized we should have gone directly to the visitor's centre, as we had already pre-purchased our Stonehenge tickets.

Between the late bus departure and the mix up in lines, this cut into our overall time to actually see Stonehenge. The bus ride back to town seems to meander down some country roads that can barely fit a bus this size and makes a couple stops before arriving at the train station. Overall, it's a very slow trip, with an expensive price tag of 18 pounds per adult. I wish there were better transportation options. By the way, Stonehenge was great.

Worst way to visit Stonehenge.
This is probably most expensive way to see Stonehenge. Bus timetable is useless. Audio guide is useless as well as it describes the location once you pass them. Plus you need to be very smart to understand comands on broken display.
You can use much more convinient and usable ways to reach Stonehenge.

I’m writing this review mainly to make future customers aware that the shuttle bus timetable is pretty pointless. Certainly don’t plan your train home according to its schedule as you’ll probably miss your train; we did! As an example, we went for the 13:43 bus fromStone Henge back to the railway station. It didn’t arrive until 14:10 but then didn’t depart until 14:18 as there was a large number of passengers to board. The 33 minute journey stated on the timetable is completely unrealistic in the busy summer traffic. It’s not a surprise that the roads to Stone Henge are going to be busier in the summer; why not alter the timings on the published timetable so that people can plan their onward journey accordingly? Better still, have two shuttle buses during the summer instead of just one doing the entire loop. For the expensive prices they charge, they could absolutely afford it. The other reason it gets delayed is because of the amount of time is takes to board everyone, particularly from the train station. The driver has to process cash and card payments, give tourists general information and prices. We had prebooked and had our confirmation barcode ready to show the driver, which I presumed would simply be scanned and we’d board quickly - wrong! The driver had to take out a clipboard and start writing our names on it, then creating a new paper receipt for us. It takes so long to board a huge queue of people in this fashion. Why not have an extra member of staff or two to process payments/bookings at the bus door rather than the driver having to do every single one? Again, with the amount of money the company are making, they could afford some extra employees.

Once you arrive at Stone Henge, the staff are pleasant and helpful. I didn’t realise there’s a choice of walking or taking yet another bus to the actual stones. With your ticket, you’d think you could simply walk through the opening of the path and make your way to the stones - again, wrong! As we walked towards the entrance, we found 2 absolutely huge queues! One for pre bought tickets, one for on the day entry. As I had our prebooked email with barcode, plus a second printed ticket from the bus driver, I wondered why on earth I’d need to obtain a third one! I went past the queue and asked the member of staff manning the entrance to the path whether I needed to queue up as I had 2 versions of a ticket already. He said we could simply walk through if we were planning to walk to the stones and back. We’d only need to queue to have our ticket stamped so we could use the bus taking people to the stones! So many people must’ve been queuing for ages needlessly if they walked to the stones (30 mins each way). Some simple signs explaining this would work wonders. I also feel that Stone Henge Tours need to invest in some simple barcode scanning machines. This would save such a huge amount of time getting people onto the bus and getting into the venue.

Over to the positives! The driver of the shuttle bus is fantastic. He was so helpful, polite and informative. His driving was also excellent, getting a double decker bus down a narrow country lane past HGV’s!

Stone Henge itself is definitely worth seeing and the surrounding area remains unspoilt and not ‘touristy’ at all.

We were nervous after reading some of the reviews, but really wanted the flexibility of going on our own to Stonehenge vs a bus tour from London, so we went for it and it was GREAT. This was a huge lifetime bucket list for me, but even more so Sarum, so I was excited to have time to explore both. We arrived by train in Salisbury and found the bus stop straight away. We waited a bit in line as it's a little old school at the check in, but everyone in line made it on the bus and off we went! We spent about 1:45 at Stonehenge and the bus arrived just as scheduled to take us to Sarum. Good to line up 15 min early to get a seat (easier to wait with ice cream in hand!) But the driver tried to squeeze on as many as he could. Sarum was a dream... and most people didn't get off for it! The cool thing our driver said was that you can take ANY bus back into Salisbury- sure enough, a red city bus accepted our passes and we were whisked right into Salisbury in time for Sunday roast! Then a stroll past the cathedral and on to the train station where we boarded right away and were back in London in no time! No snafus, easy and affordable to buy the all in one pass. Highly recommend!

It's a scandal that this company has a monopoly on transport between Salisbury and the ancient monuments and has the cheek to call their 'service' a 'tour' (lol). Even worse that English Heritage recommend them on their website - they should be ashamed.

Paid £18.50 (no discount for online advance payments) a head to get to Stonehenge and Old Sarum from Salisbury.

The first ' Tour' was due to leave at 10:12 - it arrived 30 minutes late and there weren't enough seats so some people had to stand up on the bus. It looked like the driver was being trained by his grumpy mate.

Same grim crew on the way back and same overcrowding. I know the company will try to play the 'summer holidays' card but the increase in demand shouldn't come as a surprise to them should it?

We decided not to get out at Old Sarum for fear of not being able to get home later.

Avoid.

Not sure what all the bad reviews are about but actually found it to be a pretty hassle-free way to see the Stonehenge (cue Ylvis) - bus once an hour from a few stops in Salisbury. Really glad we got the "bus & entry to Stonehenge & Old Sarum" for£36 per person, especially after I saw really long queues for tickets at the Stonehenge Visitor Centre! We could just get in with the bus receipts without having to line up for tickets. Yes, it is true it's just a bus with a plug-in audio guide with sparse reasonably interesting facts, but the price is not that crazy considering it includes entry tickets as well - there's no need to choose a time slot for visiting beforehand which you have to do when buying entry tickets online yourself. If you just buy tickets for Stonehenge at English Heritage online on your own, it's already £20+ per person plus £6.50 for Old Sarum that has to be bought in advance by the morning of before 8:45 am I believe although nobody checked it onsite. So, you get the bus to and from Salisbury, plus can get off at Old Sarum castle ruins and back on any bus to Salisbury if you choose to - had the same driver and he was really helpful, telling us where to go without us even having to ask. There's a Harvester family restaurant right by the Old Sarum bus stop if you need to stop for lunch since the Stonehenge visitor center cafe can be quite busy. The walk up to Old Sarum from the bus stop was fairly short and easy and can get nice views of Salisbury up there - good idea to have decent footwear as can be muddy after rain.

We booked the Stonehenge bus tour from Salisbury station to Stonehenge, cathedral and old Sarum. The only leg of the journey we could complete was upto the Stonehenge. The timings are erratic. For instance a 10 am start means 10:15 am and all the timings from then on is very erratic. After getting dropped off at the Stonehenge, we waited for a bus to pick us up at 11:43. That bus showed up a tad late and left at 11:55. In order to not miss the Cathedral timing, we took a £20 cab ride from the stonehenge to the cathedral. The bus was in good shape and the driver was decently polite.

A tour? Sure… Lets try to explain in a few words this called “Tour”. OK if we call a tour this, we can call a tour every time we take a bus. I will start with something that I believe is the most impotant and it’s the health of the custumer and after my experience on the 7 of April of 2023 I can say that you can die on this tour, I’m going to explain why, the Bus only has a couple of small windows so the heat is intolerable in this time of the year, imagine in summer the temperature inside the bus can rise above 40 degrees so you can sufer heatstroke and depending on your health condition you can die, this is not a joke, the bus doesn’t have air conditioner and this tour fails in every aspect a tour can fail, late departures, bad organization for the people to get on board, the audio guides works very poorly, I saw the driver instead of having a machine to control the tickets he used a pencil to write the tickets information, I felt like I was in a time machine back in the 80s. This company has so low care of the costumers and life it self that they have to be forbidden.

First of all this is NOT a tour. If I would now I would have taken a taxi, even if it is more expensive.

It's a normal bus, just plotted outside to make it look like something different.

"AUDIOGUIDE": this is a joke. They talked just 2 times, and because you can only change the language while the audio is on, you miss the first part and then you have no idea of what they are talking about. We learnt nothing from this audioguide.

HEAT: we waited around half an hour (I'll explain about this below) inside the oven that was the bus at the sun. We took the trip at the beggining of April with 14 degrees max. I strongly advise NOT to take this bus in summer as is completely unhealthy. It has small windows, no air conditioner, and not even all the seats has windows. Many people could get unwell, we were very close to that and to leave the bus.

TIME: it was delayed about half an hour because of this: people pay on the bus (like if it was a public normal bus), and not only that, the driver write by hand the booking numbers. One by one. I arrived with my tickets already bought, but had to wait for so many people paying inside the bus because they don't even have a point at the station to pay before boarding!

In one ofe the photos you can see the time and the background of Salisbury, that was the time that we should be arriving at Stonehenge, and the bus should have departed at 12:00.

Also the boarding is so messy, people don't respect the queue, is a dissaster.

I feel scammed as this is exactly the same (and worse) than taking a normal bus but paying 10 times more.

AH and also you have to take your own headphones (not suitable for Iphone) or ask the driver to give you ones because they don't give them to you without asking.

Don't waste your money on this please.

Booked the Stonehenge-Old Sarum tour, packaged together. Tour was to be Stonehenge first, followed by another drop-off at Old Sarum on the return, then back to the rsailway station.
It started off well enough, enjoyed the double-decker bus ride along with the commentary provided through the headphones we were given. The bus arrived at Stonehenge, and we were advised to come back to the same spot for pickup. The schedule is hourly.

Boarded the bus expecting Old Sarum to be the next stop, as that's what was promised and that's what we paid for. But the bus went directly back to town and the railway station.

When we told the driver "I thought we were going to Old Sarum" he said something to the effect that we would have to make our own way to Old Sarum via the city bus system.

Three of 5 people did not have time to walk all the way into the city and wait for a public transit bus, so only two of us actually did this. It was confusing to us to get there and back, as we did not know the roads or local transit system at all, plus it's at least a kilometre walk from the railway station to the centre of town and then back again. I don't mind the walk, but if I was not as mobile as I am, I couldn't have done it.

I feel that the driver should have been up front at the beginning if he had no intention of letting us go to Old Sarum, and we should have been offered a partial refund of our admission fees. We paid for Old Sarum admission as well as Stonehenge, but it was not delivered unless we were willing to get there on our own.
