A Real Piece of History

The story behind the arch is pretty amazing and a real piece of railway history. Designed by Izumbard Kingdom Brunel it is the longest span of brick-built bridge in the world.

A bridge not to be missed. When built everyone said it would fall down as it's such a shallow arch. But Brunel knew different :-)

I'm grateful to TripAdvisor because I would never have known to come to this spot on our visit to Maidenhead otherwise. We parked for free along the road close to the Sounding Arch, which was very interesting to see and fun to hear the echos. From there, we continued walking down the Thames where you could see the large and... More

A fine bridge, built by a genius, over England's greatest river. The echo is just a bonus. You can sit on the downstream grassy banks of the Thames and enjoy a picnic while admiring this monument to railway engineering.

An amazing span of brickwork over the river. designed by Brunel The echo from being under it is remarkable and it is well worth a walk to get to it

Its just down the road from us. I see it frequently. When the children were young we walked on fine Sundays along the Thames to shout and whoop under the Sounding Arch, to enjoy its echo and reverberating sound effects They loved it!. Its does not have the breathtaking grandeur of Clifton suspension bridge or of the Tamar River crossing.... More

Worth a visit if in the locality, this section of the Thames is beautiful, but restricted access to riverside.

A walk down the river in Maidenhead is relaxing and tranquil, the sounding arch a very old brick built bridge and it has a great echo! The walk past goes to Bray with views of the rich and famous houses.
