We booked a trip in early September for six people and Billy Dog, from 12 years old to a 59 year old. Richard was very informative and obviously has a great depth of knowledge about the area as well as the local history . With some of these tours, we often find that the advertisement doesn't live up to expectations. With Richard's tour we actually went off road and found some stunning scenery which you wouldn't normally see if you drove yourself. It was a mix of single track roads, forestry roads and off road very uneven roads, these being the best for the views. We can certainly recommend a tour with Richard, he is an extremely knowledgeable and nice chap. We will return sometime in the future to do another tour.

I have been remiss in not touting how absolutely wonderful Cambrian Safaris is, ans most specially, the owner Richard. My family and I were on a cruise We were on a cruise of the British isles and the main reason we chose this cruise was because of our love of british crime television shows. I contacted Richard for a tour of Aberystwyth where the show Hinterland takes place. He agreed to pick us up in Holyhead ( some 3+ hours from Aberystwyth) and then dedicated himself to making sure we had the best 4 hours possible as we made our way to Aberystwyth. First of all, Richard is a walking, talking encyclopedia of all things Welsh. A greater advocate or spokesperson for the country I cannot imagine. He is so filled with interesting facts, anecdotes, and history of wales that our long car ride to Aberystwyth flew by. As soon as we got close he switched into Hinterland mode, letting us know every time was passed somewhere an episode was filmed. He never hesitated to stop and let us get out and traipse around and take pictures. We spent a good half hour at the train station in Borth where an iconic episode of Hinterland was filmed. The train station also had a lovely little sort of museum to Hinterland there and the lovely volunteers there, a husband and wife, showed us a photo album of pictures of the Hinterland cast and crew but also shared with us some insider stories about the cast. It was fantastic. Driving through Aberystwyth Richard pointed out the police station where Mathias and Mared and Lloyd and Shawn worked, Gwen’s house, Mared’s house, where Mathias went running, where the first episode’s murder occurred, just sooo many great locations. Then he took us to a delightful lunch spot called Two Hoots. Very charming, and lovely location. The tour culminated in a visit to The Devil’s Bridge, an iconic location in the span of the series, also to the Devil’s Bridge hotel which doubled as Pontarfynach, the horrible children’s home around which so much Hinterland drama occurred. It was a dream come true being there, wandering around the hotel, scrambling down beside the bridge where the waterfalls were and a couple of characters in Hinterland met their end. Anyway, if you love the series #Hinterland contact Richard at Cambrian Safaris. If you’d like a wonderful tour of beautiful Wales contact Richard at Cambrian Safaris. Our time with Richard was the high point of our 15 day cruise. And if that wasn’t enough, Richard got us back to Holyhead in time for our cruise ship’s departure, but even made sure that we were delivered right to the the ship’s gang-plank! We love Richard, we lovevCambrian Safaris, we love Wales, and Hinterland! Do yourself a favor when all this stay at home stuff is over and get a tour going with Richard and Cambrian Safaris!

Richard was amazing as we explored the quiet beauty of this unforgettable country. We were picked up in Cardiff and began our journey to Aberystwyth discovering the historical foundations of the Welsh mining industry along the way. We learned so much from Richard's abundant knowledge. Later that day, we went on a hike to a beautiful cascading waterfalls, and then stopped for a scrumptious lunch. Richard's knowledge of the hidden natural treasures enhanced our visit even further. As we travelled through the Cambrian Mountains, Richard brought us to Carreg Cennen, a majestic, rugged castle atop the steep sides of a crag. The view of the surrounding countryside with its sheep, ancient trees and Red Kites was sublime. I had mentioned that I had hoped that I might get a glimpse of the farm I had lived on many decades ago, and Richard made arrangements to visit which was such a joy to share with my family. Not far from Aber, we travelled to the beautiful natural estate of Hafod and explored the artistic picturesque principles and the splendid views. Richard not only was able to provide the artistic history of the estate, but also the inspiration it gave to writers and artists . On our way to Oxford, we travelled through the Elan Valley with its undulating hills and architecturally brilliant reservoirs . Richard is masterful in his knowledge and that coupled with his kind and thoughtful ways and good sense of humour made the visit wonderfully memorable. Diolch yn fawr!

I was in Wales for a month from the USA, and was lucky enough to go on two tours with Richard! One through the Cambrian Mountains and another around Snowdonia. They were both fantastic! As has already been mentioned in previous reviews, Richard has so much knowledge and clear love for the land with which he lives. So much information given in both tours, and it was wonderful to be able to go in the back country. Richard will tailor the tour to your interests. Cannot recommend Cambrian Safaris more highly. I feel so fortunate to have found them. I will remember the sights forever. Thank you Richard!

Pickup from your hotel, nice comfortable Land Rover Discovery and off you go. This time we did the Elan Valley visiting all the dams, the scenery as always is breathtaking. The dams themselves are quite awesome with torrents of water flowing over them and Richard of course explained how and why they were built. We saw the Wye, Rheidol and the Ystwyth rivers, which were in full flow due to the February storms. We also met some badger-faced sheep and as Richard explained, there are Torddu and Torwen varieties. Without doubt, this is the best way to do sightseeing and Richard's encyclopaedic knowledge is quite remarkable, much more than a tour guide, this is someone deeply attuned to his element.
