Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A ruined 11th century castle, next to the town centre, only the gatehouse and a few outer walls remaining, along with a remodelled, rebuilt 19th century "Keep",which now houses a very interesting museum of various artifacts and a section of how locals used to live!
Entrance is free to the museum and the castle grounds are now designated as a garden and picnic area .
The landscape is uneven and "hilly" .
Well worth a visit for a couple of hours if in the area.....recommend.

Easily found from the main street in Abergavenny, this is a romantic ruined castle with useful explanatory notice boards and amazing views. There are picnic tables. Free entry. It was fascinating to imagine, with the aid of pictures on the notices, what the place must have been like hundreds of years ago.
The Museum is shut on Mondays so we were unable to see it.

A nice short visit to the castle in Abergavenny, the castle is just ruins but worth a visit to something that once was a great place I imagine. There is a museum on site too but not much else, a short stroll from the town centre with its shopping and eateries. Peak holiday times and car parking can be an issue, public toilets in the car park too

We visited as one of a number of stops on the Abergavenny blue plaque town trail. It’s a modest castle but there are several interesting information boards which explain the history and the disposition of the stone walls. Probably not as dramatic as some of the other Welsh castles but an interesting place to spend a little time. The museum was closed at the time we visited so I’m not able to comment on it.

What a little gem of a place which is right on my doorstep, we often ignore these places but we really should seek out more of these jewels of Wales. The castle is obviously in ruins now, but there is still much to see and wander around, there are some very good history boards around the place, both in English and Welsh, which help explain more. The views around the valley are glorious, and you can see why this became a critical place to build your castle as you have clear 360 views all around. The museum seems small to start with, but it’s a bit like the Tardis, it just seems to go on and on. There are lots of artefacts from various time periods such as the Bronze Age and Roman periods, and these come with helpful information boards, again in both Welsh and English. There are some videos also amongst the museum which help explain a bit more. As you make your way through the museum you come across an old Welsh kitchen, a typical shop and an old Anderson shelter from WW2, it reminded me very much of St.Fagans Museum in Cardiff as it took you back in history. Fabulous place, I shall return.

We really enjoyed walking around the ruins with some interesting information about a couple of the towers.
However, thought the museum could be better in providing a history of the castle and area. Seemed only really geared up to kids.
So only needed an hour you don’t need any longer

Tucked away from the town centre, overlooking the water meadow, there are lots of info boards in the grounds and Keep describing how the castle was used and by whom, in days gone by. The surround walls also provide lots of shelter and create a sun trap for enjoying the vista.
Inside the Keep there is a very informative museum. I particularly liked the third floor exhibits which brought back memories of my childhood.
There is no entry fee, which is frankly ridiculous for such an entertaining attraction.

Whilst on holiday in the Brecon Beacons, we visited several places in the vicinity. One of which i wanted to tick off the list - Abergavenny and its castle. There is not so much to see as it's mostly ruins but you can get a idea of how impressive it would have been in its hayday. There is a museum there too but do check opening times. It was a lovely day, sun shining, and we found Abergavenny a very pretty town to explore with ample carparking. Enjoy !

We stopped to check out the small city, and visited the castle, which is just some ruins. Perhaps it may be interesting to some, but it is nothing out of the ordinary.
Climbing on the old rocks looked fun, so perhaps kids may enjoy it.

Wanted to show my children a little bit of Abergvenny history whilst visiting family who live there.
Brilliant! Free entry in this hidden little gem. Glorious views, lots of history did not disappoint. Well worth a visit

Dear Kim,
Only assistance dogs are permitted in the castle grounds and the museum. However Castle Meadows which is adjacent to the castle is dog friendly.
