About
Plas Mawr, or the Great Hall, is quite simply the finest surviving Elizabethan town house anywhere in Britain. This was a golden age when fabulously wealthy merchants invested in mansions, rich fittings and lavish entertaining. Robert Wynn, third son of a local landowner, wanted a piece of the action. The house’s main frontage is discreetly hidden away in a steep narrow lane. So the High Street gatehouse only hints at the grandeur within, as you rise via a series of terraces to explore 17 impressive rooms. The displayed opening times are our general pattern. Please check the Cadw website for specific times and days, including closures.

    A hidden gem
What an amazing house! So much history and so well preserved. The fact that is so unspoilt means you get a real sense of the spirit of Elizabethan architecture. Well worth the entrance fee – a hidden gem in the heart of Conwy.

    One not to miss
This really is one not to miss. What you see from the entrance on the street is not what you see once you go through. The actual house is behind the facade and gives an indication of life in the Elizabethan era. I doubt whether there is a better example of a house of this sort in the UK. The visit is worth every penny of the entrance fee.

    Loved this Visit
Great old home meticulously maintained is such a worthwhile visit. We loved the history of the home, and were impressed by the details presented as you wander from room to room. Original plaster is wonderful, the story behind it is thoughtful, and we so enjoyed our hour long visit.

    Step Back Into Another Age
This house is one of the most interesting historical structures we've seen. It is essentially an exact reproduction of what houses looked like in the Elizabethan era. There are numerous rooms and accompanying furniture and accessories to explore. The level of detail is amazing. You can spend just a couple of hours here or an entire day, depending on your time constraints and level of interest. They also feature a nice, high quality gift shop where you will find souvenirs not available anywhere else.

    A must-see in Conwy
What a find! We only stuck out heads in here to get out of the rain, and then realised we could go in as we had Cadw membership! What an incredible place. The house is stunning; a fabulous example of Elizabethan architecture and design, with the added intricacies and decorations informed by the owner's travels! One room set up with videos so that you can understand the restoration work that has been done; fascinating and so carefully completed. Incredible to see something so positive come out of the Oct '87 gales. 12 and 14 years old bots also fascinated by the house! And I now know where the term 'threshold' comes from!

    Step back to Tudor times!
If you like history, this is a must visit! The house provides a fantastic insight into the late Tudor period, including some of the original walls and floors, furniture, decorations, badges and carpets. It certainly helped that the fantastic team of volunteers are just as enthusiastic about history as we are:) We would love to come back again!

    Lovely house
This is a lovely and very interesting house. But mind your head and feet. There are hazards for tall people and foot hazards for everyone. The house was built by ship builders and many ship building techniques are evident on the second and third floors. I won't give away their secrets, so you'll have to visit to find out.

We arrived at a brilliant time between two school visits! Friendly and helpful staff. Great audio tour with fascinating information which you can undertake at your own speed. There are also extra audio commentaries if you want to have more information in many rooms. We also found out that a disabled person and a companion can join for free!

Do not on any account miss this absolute gem right in the middle of Conwy. It is an outstanding building and the restoration has been completed to a remarkable standard. We could have spent most of a day in here.

Lots to listen to the the audio tour and some a lovely place for a quick visit; there are steps though and some uneven floors.
