About
Plas Mawr, or the Great Hall, is quite simply the finest surviving Elizabethan town house anywhere in Britain. This was a golden age when fabulously wealthy merchants invested in mansions, rich fittings and lavish entertaining. Robert Wynn, third son of a local landowner, wanted a piece of the action. The house’s main frontage is discreetly hidden away in a steep narrow lane. So the High Street gatehouse only hints at the grandeur within, as you rise via a series of terraces to explore 17 impressive rooms. The displayed opening times are our general pattern. Please check the Cadw website for specific times and days, including closures. Advanced booking required.

Don't walk by, step inside!

A fascinating house the hand held podcast was informative and brought the history alive, my wife and our seven boy really enjoyed the tour which you can do at your own pace. It really is something for everyone. Great staff as well.

Elizabethan manor

Great Elizabethan Manor House especially as it started to rain as we approached! Very handy audio guide which was informative and humorous. A good visit but beware if unsteady on your feet with huge thresholds and uneven floors and circular stairs to contend with but then this is an Elizabethan house 500 years old

Beautiful Turdor house
Sep 2021
If you’re in Conwy you must visit Plas Mawr! It claims to be the best surviving Tudor house in the country and I can see why. It’s beautiful. There is a great audio tour which explains everything with an opportunity to find out more if you want to. People who picked up the written info didn’t look like they were having as much fun as we were. The staff and volunteers are excellent taking time to answer questions and give extra insight into the property. There’s a great video presentation about the restoration which is well worth a watch. Quite a lot of steps but worth the effort! Excellent value too. Loved this visit and would definitely go back.

An amazing 16C house in Conwy
Sep 2021
A hidden gem.
I'm not always impressed but I was with this building. Very impressed.
I appreciated having the hand held guide (that I have only ever seen and used in Amsterdam). This gives you the chance to go round at your own pace and also to get extra details about each room, if you want to hear it.
The staff were very knowledgeable and helpful too.

Splendidly restored Elizabethan townhouse
Sep 2021
This house has been restored lovingly & with tremendous attention to detail. It must have cost a fortune but is probably now the best example of a property of this age & quality which is open to the public. Well worth a visit.

Beautiful and unexpected!
Aug 2021 • Couples
Unexpectedly stumbled across this - not very well sign posted outside but we wandered in and so glad we did! It was really interesting, beautiful and a good way to spend an hour. Interesting to see the style and objects used in the olden days. Bigger inside and more to see than we imagined when entering. Friendly staff!

Elizabethan Excellence
Aug 2021
This is an absolute must-see in Conwy! Obviously, the Castle is a must-do too (both Cadw) but this house really is one of the finest examples of Tudor craftsmanship in the world. It's well worth spending a few hours here.

Staff were very good, engaged brilliantly with our children and clearly knew their stuff. The audio tour delighted our 7-year-old especially.

What we really liked about it was that it wasn't stuffy. The rooms were decorated with some fine period pieces. Even though a lot of the artefacts weren't original to the house, they did blend in very well.

The courtyard is a great spot to have a picnic and you're protected from the Welsh weather (the legendary Edwards the Butchers is next door for some amazing takeaway).

Make sure you don't miss the exhibition about health on the top floor. Our favourite fact was that a urine flask is called a 'Jordan'. LOL.

Wow, what an enjoyable experience, surpassed our expectations. The free audio guides where perfect and allowed the children to interact in their own time. The building was superb and a pleasure to experience. A hidden gem we will definitely visit again.

A beautiful example of a Tudor house
Aug 2021 • Couples
One of the best examples of Elizabethan architecture and furniture I've ever seen. Some beautiful carvings on the walls and ceilings, and you can feel the history as you're walking through. The doors were magnificent examples of Tudor craftsmanship.

A free audio guide or paper guide was available (in English and Welsh).

I visit this house everytime I have a trip to Conwy, and always find something that I've missed on previous visits!

The volunteers we asked questions to were very helpful and knowledgeable and are a credit to CADW. They drew our attention to small things that we would have missed.
