- Carolyn S3 contributionsIncredible views! One of the servers in town mentioned these ruins to us. Otherwise we wouldn’t have known about it. It was quite a little hike up to the top but so worth it. The view and the quality of the ruins were spectacular. Such a lovely day even in the rain. Wear good shoes if there is rain as some of the path can be muddy and slippery.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 October 2023
- Traveller47G40 contributionsThe magnificent Crows Castle/The Crows fortressCastell Dinas bran, known locally as Crow Castle/ the Crows fortress is a magnificent 13th century castle ruin, towering above Llangollen below. Views are breathtaking and well worth the effort. Combined with folklore rumours of legends -hauntings, its atmospheric to say the least and definitely one not to be missed!Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 22 March 2024
- Jane F58 contributionsInteresting SiteVery steep assent, but well worth the views on a clear day. We are well on in years, but took our time and used the many seats along the way. Better to use the access from the canal.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 April 2024
- madvtraveller53 contributionsNice crisp walk up a hillA lovely straightforward walk to Castell Dina’s Bran! I went with my family who all have different physical abilities, and we were all able to do it. The views on the way up and down are rewarding, along with exploring the ruins of the castle up top the hill. It’s a lovely walk which ends in a gorgeous town with a rewarding ice cream shop!Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 July 2024

From the town centre, looking to the hill top, it can look daunting to a non-walker/hiker, but it's a great little walk with clear footpaths. It takes about 40mins (with kids, youngest 10) to get to the top, spending however long you like at the top to relax and take all the sights in.
Trundle back into the town centre for a well deserved ice cream.

We walked from Llangollen Wharf and did the full 6 mile circular walk called the Llangollen History Trail which takes you to Castell Dinas Bran, an Abbey and HorseShoe Falls on the River Dee - returning via the Canal Tow path. The walk up to the Castle is the steepest bit of the walk but so worth it! The views from the top are amazing - we could just make out the arches of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct through the mist - or maybe it was the heat haze! The path is mostly very well and clearly marked although we did get a bit lost around the Abbey where there is also a campsite. Go past the campsite road barrier and through the camping field. A very enjoyable walk which took us about 4 hours

The views from this hilltop ruin on a sunny day are 360° magnificent. With a modicum of fitness it's an easy walk.
Yes the final ascent is steep but there's no prizes for getting there the quickest and there's multiple opportunities to stop, rest and take a photo. Take a little water, a picnic and a camera/phone. There is a route down the other side, which might've proven a simpler way up, but either way as the title says 'the reward is more than worth the effort of getting there...'

This 13th century castle is well worth a challenging walk from Llangollen. For a straightforward route along the main road, follow the map over the canal and turn right at the top on the road, then continue until you reach the sign which takes you to the bottom of the hill. The views are spectacular at the top but it is a challenge. There is a more adventurous route through some fields as found online. It was around 1 hour of walking and required some stamina since it is very steep at the end for around 25 minutes. Would 100% recommend.

These ruins of a 13th century medieval castle occupy a prominent hilltop site above the town of Llangollen. It can be approached either from a footpath from the Panorama Walk from Trevor ( very close to Offas Dyke ) or from the centre of Llangollen. We did it from Llangollen and you pick up the well indicated footpath at the top of Wharf Hill close to the Llangollen Wharf and next to Dinas Bran secondary school along side which the path runs for the first couple of hundred meters or so.
It should take about 40 minutes or so depending on how much time you spend admiring the spectacular views on the way up. Initially it’s a bit steep through the first couple of farm fields but then it evens out and is a moderate climb for the rest and especially on the final mound itself, as long as you stick to the well defined designated path that winds up the side of the hill.
Once you reach the summit you are afforded 360o views of Llangollen and the surrounding countryside and that is the reason to do the walk rather than the castle ruins themselves IMHO. Some impressive arches remain but this is no Tintern Abbey for example.

The ruins of a once grand castle and perched on top of a hill which amazing views of the surrounding towns, valleys and hills. The view of itself is worth a visit but the crumbling ruins of the castle are spectacular. After dozens of castle visits over the past 3 weeks, the 13 year old claims this is his favourite. Avoid visiting if you can't climb a moderately steep incline.

Each time to visit Llangollen we say “ must walk up there “
This time we got organised and packed a picnic before leaving home .
Absolutely stunning walk up and down and the views are incredible.
Glad we used our poles as it meant even with my asthma I could get to the top .
We had an amazing view and could see for miles .
Well worth the effort and would definitely do it again

Rainy day but the walk is a good workout. Well worth it even in the rain. Can recommend, also the history of the castle is amazing and I would imagine on a good day the views must be spectacular.

Can you camp on the grounds or would it better to find a hotel nearby?
Written 10 September 2018
No camping allowed at the castle. There is a good campsite nearby at Vale Cruccis (remains of an old Abbey) and lots of accommodation in and around LLangollen.

Hi. I'm planning on proposing to my partner in a few weeks at the top of Castell Dinas Bran.
I just wondered where the nearest place to park is as i'll be carrying a picnic, blankets etc. Thanks!
Written 15 August 2016
There are several routes up so you can either park in the town and head over the bridge and follow the signs (quite lengthy), or do like I did and drive along the A542 (Horseshoe Pass) and take the first right after the Llangollen Pavillion (Eisteddfod Showground) and head for the Panorama Rocks. Quite difficult to describe if you're not familiar with the area so I suggest you check a map. This is probably the shortest route up if you are carrying heavy items. Good luck, hope all goes well and you get good weather.

How long does it take to get to the top? A rough estimate for my 5 year old,to plan ?
Written 18 September 2015
Thanks everyone. I parked in the short stay car park with toilets, near the tourist information centre.£1 for 4 hours. I walked over the river bridge towards the canal boats ride. Passed the boat ride cafe turned left over the canal bridge to the tiny steps. It took me 40 mins to go up to the castle ruins with my 5 year old and 20 easy mins to come down. We all enjoyed being up. Fantastic views. Picturesque.

Hi guys!
Where is the best place to park to walk to the top please?
Regards
Written 9 July 2015
Hi. If you want a short walk then parking at the sun Trevor pub is probably the best. Then just follow the road up and around to the castle. Easy.
Just make sure you stop in for a beer and some snacks.
