Had a brilliant day on the challenger trip, so much fun exploring the slate mines! Aiden was a fantastic leader, always making us feel safe and supported. He was also very knowledgable about the mines and their history. A truly unique experience, will be recommending!

My wife and I done the extreme experience at go below. Firstly the staff Aiden & Ian were outstanding, thier level of attention to safety was first class. Aidens thirst for Geology complements the experience with his interesting talk about the mines. Both know the history and share this knowledege with the group. The whole experience was truly an experience in a lifetime

I love an outdoor adventure and have been part of a group exploring abandoned mines for a while now. When my partner discovered Go Below were running Deep Sleep, we knew we had to make the trip up to North Wales for my birthday.

We met the lovely Amanda in a windswept car park just outside Tanygrisiau at 5pm and then began the 40 minute hike into the hills through the enormous piles of discarded slate. 90% of what was mined here was simply discarded in these man made mountains of rock, the remaining 10% cut and sold as roof tiles. The climb was steep at times and I was thankful to reach Llyn Cwmorthin, the beautiful lake at the top of the hill. It is here in a small reclaimed miners cottage you are given your welly boots, climbing harness, helmet and head torch plus a safety briefing. Once everyone was kitted up, we walked out into the last of the sunshine, and through a big metal gate on the entrance to the mine adit, which Amanda then locked behind us.

From here we probably spent an hour or so descending into the mine along a mixture of passages, old miners stairways, makeshift ladderways and even a little abseil. Some skill was needed to ensure your feet stay dry, but otherwise as long as you're reasonably fit anyone can do this bit.

Eventually, we arrived at chamber 39, where Miles was waiting to greet us in the Deep Sleep break area. From here, everything was pretty chilled, we were offered drinks and chose which Firepot meals we wanted. Miles prepared them while Amanda gave us more of a tour of the nearby mine artefacts. We chose our cabins (well, I'd chosen mine well in advance as we had the Grotto) and when everyone was tired, we disappeared off to our own spaces for the night. The Grotto is such a uniquely special space, with a comfortable big bed and set back away from the main camp over a little bridge, set into an alcove on the side of the chamber. Everything you see down here has made the arduous journey from the surface by hand, and built in the chamber. You have electricity for lights and phone charging, and running water, all of which is supplied from within the mine, using hydro generators and water from a natural spring. Despite being 1,375ft below the top of the mountain, Miles has ensured you still have a connection to the outside world, if you want it - there's wifi!

In the morning, after breakfast, we made our way back up to the surface through a different route, allowing Amanda to show us yet more history from this amazing mine, finally emerging through the same gate we entered, back into the sunlight. We dropped our kit back off at the cottage, and said goodbye to our phenomenal guide, Amanda. Until next time, as I'll definitely be back to do some of the extreme trips too.

If you're looking for something unique, different and a bit of an adventure, I can't recommend Go Below highly enough. The team are so passionate about what they do, and they will go above and beyond to ensure you have an amazing time deep below the surface.

What can I say that hasn't already been said, such an amazing experience! Every little detail was well thought out, even down to where we slept.

Myles was the perfect host, such a lovely person & couldn't do enough for each of us whilst we stayed at the Deep Sleep.

Amanda was the perfect guide & chaperone, her knowledge of the mines really made our trip & all the little extras she put in to our tours were amazing.

Thank you so much for a trip that we will never forget!

A fantastic experience! I’d never done anything like this before but the guides (Jonty and Ian) were really helpful, encouraging and taught us the history of the slate mine we were in really well. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for an unusual and thrilling adventure day.

Two days since I’ve done the challenge and I’m still buzzing with adrenaline! This was one of the BEST adventures I’ve done.

Thanks to our fantastic leaders Jonty and Ian who made the trip much more memorable, fun and 100% safe.

The trip started with a short hike up to the base for gearing up. (Thankfully we had to drive up to the parking due to the weather). Helmets, harnesses, wellies and you’re ready to go!!!

The first two traverses test your nerves properly but after that you accept your fate and just enjoy the multiple spikes of adrenaline. There were loads of ziplines a zipride, 2 ladders, multiple traverses, 2 bridges for one of which we crossed with our lights off!!!! With vision gone, I was praying that all my other senses are up to the task!!
I wish there were more abseils though (in general I wish there were more of all of them).

The last part is the freefall jump! If you’re like me and want one last adrenaline spike you can ask to be pushed! (A massive THANK YOU to Jonty, never thought free falling could be THIS exhilarating).

After the adventure, I was so full of adrenaline that went for a 3 hour hike around the area with fascinating views!!

This is the type of adventure that I will happily do again and again.

Maybe they can have “triple ultimate xtreme” and combine all 3 together or even escape adventure where we have to solve mysteries to find the way out!!😅

Did the Extreme Caving experience today, for 7hrs!!
What a day!!
Jonty & Ian took our team through caverns and caverns of amazing experiences including history along the way.
We had a great team of 10 of us, who all got on, coupled with both Jonty & Ian just created a fantastic day.
The mix of climbing, abseiling, zip wiring and ‘and finishing with the Controlled Drop gave us so much variety.
Have to say, we had a couple of people who were nervous of heights, but they overcame that through sheer strength and encouragement. Great to see.
You need to be physically fit as you are doing lots of energy sapping experiences and once you’re down it’s difficult to return to surface.
It’s cool down there, but wore multiple layers that really helped & good fitting gloves a must!!
Absolute 10/10 👌 cannot recommend enough.

Bought the Deep Sleep experience for my partner's birthday gift as we both like adventurous. The experience started with an steep 30min hike to the entrance. At this point my heart rate was already approaching uncomfortable rates. Luckily we stopped to gear up and I could sit down and have a breather. I was already sweating at this point. We geared up and were given basic safety rules. Afterwards we walked another 100m or so to the entrance of the cave where the 420m descent into the Deep sleep chambers of the abandoned slate mine started. In retrospect hiking the tallest mountain in Wales the day before wasn't the greatest idea as my legs were basically destroyed and there was a lot of squatting. Here I was thinking I'll be ziplined and lowered into the cave instead of doing splits and contorting my body in unimaginable ways. 2.5 hours later and a few moments of regretting my life decisions and we were at the accommodation. I've never been happier to see a bed like this before. My happiness quickly came to a halt when we were told about the thunderbox which was just a nice way of saying we have to dedicate in a bag that will be taken to the surface by some unlucky bugger in 2 weeks' time. I would not want that job!
After a surprisingly warm and comfortable night we had an early start. What comes down must come back up again and let me tell you I was not prepared for it! To say we ascended 420m in less than an hour mostly on all fours, climbing, again doing splits hardly explains it. I do not exaggerate when I say my heart was not ready to be reaching its max on several occasions that early. I was sweating buckets, once again rethinking my life decisions that lead to this and thinking if it wouldn't just be easier to let go, lean back and hope it just ends quickly. It might have been better for everyone at this point. Luckily we soon reached the end and i could see the light at the end of the tunnel. Metaphorically as well as literally.
I couldn't wait to get our of the gear, lay on the floor and regain a normal heart rate. All in all, amazing experience that I would recommend to everyone. The guide was brilliant with lots of useful information about the mines. Moderate fitness required.

It’s brilliant that you completed our Deep Sleep experience after hiking up Y Wyddfa the day before, it’s not surprising that your legs were tired! We’re so pleased that you came underground with us for your partner’s birthday gift, we’re always glad when people visit for special occasions. It’s lovely to hear that you had a warm and comfortable night’s sleep with us and that you enjoyed your time with your leader and learnt a lot about the Cwmorthin mine. Thank you for leaving such a lovely review and we’re glad you had an incredible time in our Deep Sleep!

We have travelled all over the world and done many amazing experiences. This one really did take us somewhere new, and way out of our comfort zone. A friend had done the half day and said that he wished he had done the full trip, so without really even thinking, I booked the full day extreme trip. I didn't really even look what we would be doing, other than what to bring.

I should say - spoilers ahead - if like me you dont want to know what you'll be doing, maybe just skip to the end.

We first walked a mile up into the hills to a slate mine where we were kitted out with wellies ( believe me, they are necessary, and offer excellent grip ) a helmet (I would have banged my head about 50 times otherwise ) and a full climbing harness. This part should have triggered alarm bells in my mind but no, we trotted off to the mine. Within minutes we were learning all about why there are two caribiners on your harness. and how to attach and unattach them to ropes. Minutes later we were shuffling along a plank above a HUGE drop, carefully unattaching and reattaching the caribiners, making sure one was attached at all times... At this point I worried for my wife who was supposedly scared of heights. And drops. But she was fine !

More climbing then a ride on a seat above another huge drop along a zip wire. Then climbing up a huge wall ( notice the word HUGE appears a lot here ) on metal rungs stuck into the rock, this time the guide kept you tight on a rope. More traverses and then short ziplines ( of which I got progressively worse at, having to haul myself in a few times along the wire ). Then climbing up steep steps ( again attached and reattached every few metres, now a skill!) then more ziplines and finally a free fall drop, slowed down by a wheel onto a crash mat.

By the end, I was pretty knackered, at one point struggling to pull myself up a rope onto a rock, and even though I'm pretty heavy, I am pretty fit too. Everyone else in the group was under 30 and a lot had done mountain climbing before - this was what this was - mountain climbing in a cave ! The extreme trip is as advertised - bloody extreme ! And as such, amazing value - 7 hours of activities for £99. IF you want to get yourself out of your comfort zone, its unbeatable. The guides were excellent, always calm and friendly and always checking for your safety. I just couldnt believe "what we were doing" within minutes of starting, but its certainly somethinf we'll never forget.
