This superbly restored gentry manor house is no ordinary heritage...

This superbly restored gentry manor house is no ordinary heritage attraction. History here is tangible. The costumed servants of the house are living and working in 1645 and allow you to share and engage in their world. Fires crackle, candles flicker and the sounds and smells of domestic life make your visit a memorable experience of the past. It takes a moment to attune your ear to the unfamiliar speech within the Manor itself, but within seconds of your warm welcome you become immersed in the time of the Civil Wars and the cares and concerns of ordinary people living in extraordinary times.

An excellent visit enjoyed by the whole group. The idea of staff being in character and speaking in the language of the time was effective and made the visit so enjoyable and informative. I am so glad the Council invested in renovating the Manor from the 1600's - money well spent. Staff are so welcoming and friendly. Cafe / restaurant... More

Was blown away - and it took us completely by surprise. We loved it! Well worth the entry fee - the staff are excellent and very good performers. We were two 25 year olds and it's suitable for all ages!

Absolutely brilliant experience! The house and the staff were fantastic, very informative and interesting. The master of the house was 'away' but the 'servants' who took us round the house were faultless in their knowledge and performance and made us feel very welcome. Would definitely go again to meet the master or for one of the ghost tours.

We visited the house in the depths of winter so it must have felt similar to living here when heating systems were not around. The actors, dressed up and looking very authentic, were good and had a lot of information and humour to put across. The rooms were also interesting to walk through and the initial self-learning section after you... More

Booked 2 tickets for the Ghost Tour. Definitely well worth the money. Some very interesting ghost stories told by two great guides. We didn't see anything on the Ghost Tour but did feel a very very cold presence in some of the rooms! Highly recommend for £16 each. Lasted for 1 hour and 30 mins. You get to go in... More

Called in on the off chance, we were blown away by the place, totally unexpected, the house is great but the guides in period costumes acting out the parts of the household really make it a bit of an experience, we were the only ones there so it was a bit of a privilege having a guided tour. Outstanding. Well... More

Staff welcoming and helpful. Great information provided on tours and a sprinkle of humour made it easy to digest the information. Great gift shop with unusual items at reasonable prices. Food choice limited and pricey and only machine coffee, invest in a good set up and attract ladies that lunch.

So much more sophisticated since my last visit 23 plus years ago when my children were small. I enjoyed an interesting and entertaining tour of the beautiful Manor House set in lovely gardens and countryside. The staff/actors were excellent, they were all dressed in appropriate costumes and speaking old English whilst informing me of a time gone bye. I would... More

The history of the hall was most interesting explained superbly in Old English by guides dressed in period costumes! There were parties of junior school children while we were there who were enjoying the experience greatly!

A visit to this Manor house is a must. Extremely knowledgeable people dress in period costume and talk you you as if you were living in their time, 1645. Such fun. You will be entertained and educated at the same time. Phone ahead to book a tour followed by festive afternoon tea, or just go and take the tour with... More
