    Once it was brilliant...Not now
Visited yesterday for the Santa experience, and very disappointed. Went 4 years ago and was amazing,we have visited loads of these days over the years and this one stood head and shoulders above. Yesterday though No,I think the name of our guide was Malcolm, along with Santa redeemed the price, which is not cheap for a family. Our previous experience was far different with not drink and free mince pies, the trail in the pit was a lot more exciting for the children(and adults)..As previously said Malcolm and Santa saved the day and their interaction was brilliant.... Sorry to say we won't return and would advise others to think twice about spending out..Once it was the best, now it's a money spinner and that's so sad..

    Great day out
Excellent your given by John who was previously a coal miner. Really enjoyed this day out. John was excellent with the children in the group. The tour is very informative and well organised. Lovely coffee shop with friendly staff. Friendly receptionist. An easy day trip by bus from Cardiff.

Well worth a visit with the tour
I enjoyed the Black Gold tour, being guided by a former miner with stories to tell. Seeing the enormous wheel in the Winding House turning was impressive. If you are tall then you will appreciate wearing the hard hat provided for the tunnels, but no other PPE is required. The simulated ride on a coal wagon (DRAM) really does make you feel like you are travelling. I found it worth having another look around the yard after the tour, but I was glad of a mug of hot chocolate in the cafe when I got inside from the winter cold. It you have time then visit the exhibition upstairs to get some historical context.

    What a brilliant experience!
The best visit of its type that I have made! The warm welcome at reception and the explanation of what was on offer was just the beginning of a thoroughly enjoyable and informative experience. Our guide, Tony, was an excellent communicator, with a good sense of humour and took his time to explain how machinery worked and answered our questions very clearly. After our tour and looking at the very well presented museum exhibits, we had lunch in the cafe - four Welsh Rarebits! It was tasty, with good sized portions and side salad. We will certainly return!

    Brilliant experience.. Excellent tour guide
Visited the mining experience today whilst on Easter hols with my 5 year old son and my parents. What a brilliant day out we had. The information around the exhibition was informative and interesting but the mining tour itself was just outstanding. Our guide Graham was absolutely fantastic. His passion and knowledge around the history and the topic of mining was absorbing. It really was first class. Thank you. An experience we will never forget about history that should never be forgotten.

    Hidden Gem in the Rhondda!
I didn't know what to expect as the tickets were very reasonably priced but we had an amazing experience! The tour was excellent, with guide Graham being very knowledgeable and friendly and really brought the tour to life having worked in the mines himself. Excellent attention to detail and just a fab afternoon out for the family. The Bracci cafe was also lovely, with a Welsh Italian feeling to it, and amazing cakes as snacks. Highly recommend it for the price!

    Meh!
Not sure what I expected but ‘it’ was not really delivered for me. I must say that we didn’t manage to have the guided tour so perhaps the rating and review would have been better if we had? It’s good to see that this important social history is preserved and ‘showcased’ but I think it could have been so much better with, perhaps, more interactive displays and a larger ‘footprint’ for the museum area. Much could be learnt from the museum at the former airfield at Filton where visitors are taken on a ‘journey’. I didn’t get the feeling of a ‘journey’ here - just ‘things’ on ‘show’

    A grand day out!
Such a fabulous day out! Wonderful setting (especially on a sunny day) and full of information. The guided tour was fantastic! Our guide was Peter and he was brilliant with the kids - made it engaging experience for the children whilst keeping it informative for us adults.

    Entertaining and informative
I can't believe I didn't do this sooner. Very informative tour by our gide John. He's worked at the mines both as man and boy and his knowledge of them is second to none. Followed by a snack at the on site Cafe which I will definitely be returning to. There was an array of food and the cakes looked amazing, as did the afternoon tea

Visited santas toy mine December 4th 2023 at 4.15 pm . Mainly baby's and toddlers with my own baby and toddler. The group was about 30 approx . Crammed in . The guide seemed disinterested and ushered us along like a herd of sheep "come on quickly ", no chance to stop to take any of the experience in, let alone take photos . For the money it was awful . I genuinely recommend ikeas santa , cheaper and all proceeds go to charity and he actually spent time interacting with my children, took time to learn their names and wishes and gave them a personal and magical experience and was patient with them . We shan't be recommending rhondda heritage park santas toy mine experience to anyone and certainly won't be returning in future . Rohndda heritages santa appeared quite cold and borderline rude to one lady with her 3 children who were a little unruley, however that's toddlers for you. She was trying to take photos but one of them wouldn't keep still for photos and rather than being a little patient or offering a solution to help he said "you've had at least 30 seconds that's all you get " before we had a chance to exit santas grotto i heard him welcoming the next group of people. So that proves how money making and rushed the experience is. And we didn't have individual photos and time it was all one big group ushered into santas grotto.
Disappointed beyond belief ! I wish I had read reviews before paying for this experience. The toys were not even wrapped the children were given a bell to exchange for a gift or their choice . This is Our first Xmas as a family of four so I thought this would be a lovely way to celerate that but was really disheartened. Hopefully the big wigs will see these reviews and start to learn 🙏

We arrived just before 10am for the first tour of the day. Peter took us round showing us all the equipment, including a huge motor for winding the cage for coal and miners up and down and taking us down into the mine to see what it looked like underground (only 20 meters down, not the full 1400 ft).

As Peter had worked at the mine, he had a lot to tell us about how things used to be, and it was all very interesting. The tour took about an hour, after which we had a look at the museum, which gave more information about the lives of the people outside the pits.

The coal, by the way, was good quality: nice and shiny, almost metallic.

Whilst on a short break to South Wales we visited the Mining Experience, and it was absolutely amazing, it is extremely well thought out, and kept in great condition, the best thing being though, is the personal guided tour by an ex miner, ours being Tony, who was fabulous, very knowledgeable and made the whole thing come together, Thanks Tony.

This is not up there with the best coal mining museums in Britain, however I would put it third behind Blaenavon Big Pit (1st) and NCM (2nd).

I think a lot of complaints re the underground tour being phoney, and the previously mentioned national museums being free are unjustified - you know the price when you enter, so take it or leave it!

As regards the underground tour, well, I think the cage ride is a very good mock-up, but the tunnels leave a bit to be desired - considering they are in reality above ground, there is enormous scope to safely recreate the foul reality of life down a pit: water running down the roof and sides, sludge on the floor, ventilation draught blowing in your face etc. How about a 3ft 6inch high stoop extending 100yds or so for able bodied visitors to reach the exits? It’s missed potential imo, and certainly some of what I have suggested could be implemented for pennies.

Staff seem polite but a touch aloof - tour guide didn’t really want to chat after the tour, which is understandable if it’s his break time etc, but would have liked to have heard a bit about his time in the mines etc.

None of this should detract from what is overall a very worthwhile attraction. It is wonderful to have a preserved Lewis Merthyr colliery in the Rhondda, and one of the things I most enjoy about driving in South Wales is that you still see pit heads in most valleys - not the case in Yorkshire where there are very few left standing!

We should take this place on its own merits - I’m sure they would like to run a “real” underground tour, but the pit was filled in, and I doubt the costs of pumping and maintaining shafts such as at Big Pit are anything like affordable without National Museum status.

The best thing was when the tour guide said “The thing about the Rhondda is: we preferred to die on our feet than live on our backs. There wasn’t a man in the whole valley who went back before the strike ended. Maggie may have closed our pits, but we crawled for no-one”
I think that sums up why the story of the Rhondda needs to be told!

Having family who were miners, I found the presentation excellent from the real life stories, the historical examples to the fun virtual rollercoaster. Well worth a visit.

Worthwhile visit to this mine, listening to the history of this place and how the overly rich mine owners subjugated their employees and essentially treated them with contempt. The former miner who narrated the tour was very knowledgeable and answered many questions. The only minor downside, if any, was the lack of staff in the eating establishment which was quite busy.

Fabulous visit yesterday.
We booked on line for the black gold experience, turned up, easy to find and plenty of parking. Warm welcome by the lovely ladies on reception.

Bought a few items as souvenirs at the shop, had tea and a croissant in the coffee shop. Everyone was warm and friendly, which makes such a change.

Waited as requested for Tony who was our guide - amusing, knowledgable and really got the children involved.

This was the best 1hr 30 mins I have spent in a long time! Thankyou!

Such an amazing experience. The tour guide was a miner himself and the knowledge he passed on was spot on. My children walked away with so much information about here they don't stop talking about it
