This barrage was engineered to turn a tidal bay into a massive freshwater lake so a huge residential and leisure complex could be built alongside it. It's a lovely walk from the cute seaside town of Penarth to Cardiff bay itself. There's spots to picnic but it was too cold today.

The visitor to the barrage can park on either the Cardiff or Penarth side with ample, cheqap parking. Also it is possible to catch a water taxi from eithe rht ehCardiff or Penarth sides. On our visit it was very busy with a large nuber of boats and small crft traveling through the lock.

As regular visitors, the barrage offers an excellent "stretch of the legs" for the family and brilliant views of the bay. It goes without saying that the fairer the weather, the more enjoyable the visit tends to be. One of the only disappointments is the general lack of places to grab something to drink. By that I mean even a... More

From the main attraction of Cardiff Bay it is a pleasant stroll out to the barrage and it is worth the effort. It is very interesting to see the mechanism working and it is an impressive feat of engineering. Good fun and instructive for kids.

I left the hedonistic delights of the Bay Area (!) and embarked on the trek out along the barrage to the bay entrance. A chilly October breeze prevented personal overheating, and the walk passes areas both under development, and undeveloped. This gives a useful insight to potentials (although the "profits before people" mantra which now seems to predominate may well... More

We parked in Penarth and walked along the barrage to Cardiff Bay, stopping to watch the boats. We then had a coffee and cake in the Norweigan church, had a stroll around the bay and caught the water bus back to Penarth. A really pleasant way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

You can walk the 1/2 to 3/4 mile trip from Cardiff Bay out to the barrage or they do boat trips for a couple of pound each way. It's an enjoyable stroll and there are a couple of cafes if you fancy a drink or nibble.

Very interesting to see how the locks work - great for children to watch the boats coming in and out and the road being raised to let them out
