Located in the heart of the impressive Cardiff Castle this museum tells the story of the Welsh soldier - commemorating over 300 years of proud and distinguished history including the Battle of Waterloo 1815, Rorke’s Drift against the Zulus 1879 as well as recent service in Iraq and Afghanistan today.
Entry is included with that of the castle.
Not a big museum but its breadth of coverage is very good as is the amount packed in. Some of the exhibits are interactive and its layout is modern in approach.

Thank you for your review. It was lovely to read that you had enjoyed your visit to the museum.
As you can imagine, it is challenging to combine the heritage of two regiments within a single museum, especially two that previously had individual museum sites at Cardiff Castle. We have tried to ensure reflection of over 300 year's history dating back to 1685.
Our current priorities for the museum are to redevelop our contemporary conflict displays, including that of service in Afghanistan.
You an keep up to date with developments by looking at our website and social networking pages. I hope that you will visit us again next time you're in Cardiff.

Not a big museum but packed with information on the armed services. The displays of medals for gallantry are quite humbling and makes you appreciate the sacrifice and bravery of these people. Well worth a visit.

This is a relatively new museum telling the story of two Welsh regiments. Entry is included with entry to the Castle, so it's either "free" or really expensive, depending on if you see the wider attractions included in the ticket. There's a fair bit of interaction - old uniforms to try on and, when I visited, a couple of friendly and knowledgeable staff had a selection of historic firearms out from their handling collection.
The downside is that it's often hard to read captions (I know light levels are low to preserve artefacts but there are ways to do this). Also, there's not actually a lot in here and what is often looks second division, albeit from the collections of several distinguished regiments. I wonder if the premier stuff is hunkered down at the longer-established companion museums in Brecon and Caernarvon.

Thank you so much for your feedback. As you rightly mentioned, although we are an independent charitable museum, we do form part of the admission ticket to Cardiff Castle. For those who live and work in Cardiff, a Castle keycard will also provide you with access to the museum.
Thank you also for the feedback about the text captions. Prior to the COVID 19 pandemic, we were intending on redeveloping the museum. These plans were temporarily stalled by the pandemic. However, we fully intend to redevelop displays and are looking to change our lighting to LED which is environmentally friendly but will also help to make the space a brighter place for all of our visitors.....so watch this space!

Very interesting exhibit with lots of information. I liked how it was displayed and that you followed a timeline up to modern day of the Welsh military. An area for children (or childish adults) to dress up too!
The only reason we gave 4* rather than 5 was because we were not informed that there was a talk going on when we arrived. When we left the exhibit a board had now been placed saying there was a talk happening which had already started. We would have been very interested in hearing it.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review on TripAdvisor. We appreciate receiving feedback from our visitors. The Firing Line Museum of The Queen's Dragoon Guards and The Royal Welsh reflects over 300 years of history of the cavalry and infantry in Wales, beginning with their formation in the 17th Century. While we are an independent museum, a visit to us is included within the general admission to Cardiff Castle.
I was pleased to read that you had enjoyed your visit to the museum and that you had found our staff to be informative. Our team of Museum Assistants play an integral role in developing talks and activities at the museum and are key to all that we offer.
We have a changing programme of events and exhibitions. You can find out more on our social networking sites on twitter, facebook and Instagram. Please do pay us another visit when you're next in Cardiff.

We are aware of the fact that our signage needs improvement and this is something we are currently looking at improving. Thank you for recommending us to other Castle visitors!

We were most impressed with the layout, there is so much to see here and the layout makes it easy to follow time lines a most enjoyable experience. There are much larger spaces that could well follow what has been done here. Well done to all concerned, it works REALLY well.
The talk on swords which could have been dry & boring was made very real and interesting by the presenters, another excellent job - well done.
The amount of display objects was astounding, covering such a large variety of times and areas of history. Again the layout allowed you to wander and stop and absorb all the different artifacts with their timelines.
Yes I realise I'm blabbering on but it was a truly well thought out and displayed collection of history of Welsh Regiments.
I will note that the children present including several school groups all seemed to be enjoying themselves as well, none of those we saw appeared bored in the least.
You can tell we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would highly recommend a visit to anyone even if you're not considering visiting Cardiff castle itself.
Added bonus, there is a cafe on site that served us a good tasty meal, their coffee was very and hot tasty and staff were friendly and helpful.

Hi, We will be taking the train from London to Cardiff. What bus should we get from the train station to the hotel or would a taxi be a better option?

Hi.
You have sent this email to the Firing Line Museum, which is based at Cardiff Castle.
There is an information desk at Cardiff Central station. Tell them the name if your hotel and they should be able to help you find the easiest way to get there.
