We had such a lovely time at the Egyptian centre. A very interactive experience which was beneficial as I struggle with reading lots of text. We had the pleasure of having an opportunity to sit down and handle some of the historic items with Luca, who was a very interesting and insightful member of staff. Swansea Uni are very lucky to have him.

We then had an Egyptian game explained to us which was good fun. The final remark is that the gift shop is very reasonably priced which was a very pleasant surprise.

Great collection with the two rooms, informative signs. And a great little gift shop and the lady at the desk was v friendly.
Sadly experience was let down by the noise. Could not concentrate in the downstairs room to read the signs as the guy speaking to other visitors was so so loud. He spoke nonstop whilst we were there at a crazy volume. We had to skip some of the exhibits near him as L we couldn’t get access. Upstairs was equally chaotic with two desks with other guests taking part in activities with staff. Again we missed some of the displays.
Feel like the interactive stuff should be a separate part entirely. That way visitors can read and enjoy the exhibits.

We are very sorry to hear of your experience at the museum, however thank you for your feedback! It sounds as if your visit coincided with a school visit to us and we would like to apologise that your visit was affected by this. Should you wish to visit us in future, quieter times include Tuesday to Friday from 2-4pm.

My wife and eldest daughter wanted to visit the Egypt centre so we went along one rainy day in August.

There are lots of interesting exhibits and very friendly, knowledgeable staff.

Plenty of interactive Egypt based activities for the children too.

All in all a great way for the family to pass a rainy afternoon.

I took my class here today and we had an absolutely fantastic time. The class all have ALN and can be a little tricky but Luke was fantastic with them. He had them engaged in all sorts of activities and we all found him fascinating.

Thank you so much for such a wonderful experience.

The Egypt Centre is a museum of Egyptian antiquities. It is part of the University of Wales Swansea.

The Egypt Centre houses part of the collection of the pharmacist Sir Henry Wellcome from the turn of the century. It has been in the University since the early 1970s. The Egypt Centre opened to the public in September 1998.

There are over 4500 items in the collection. Most of them were collected by the pharmacist Sir Henry Wellcome. Others came from: the British Museum; the Royal Edinburgh Museum; National Museums and Galleries of Wales Cardiff; the Royal Albert Museum and Art Gallery and also private donors.

They have items dating from 1000,000 BC to 500 AD, including: A 21st Dynasty Coffin; 4 New Kingdom beaded collars; Pottery; A number of items depicting the god Bes; Fish shaped cosmetic palettes; A Third Intermediate Period coffin lid; An offering table belonging to Paneb; A first century AD stela from Edfu; A paddle doll; Coffin fragments belonging to Amenhotep Son of Hapu; Offering trays; and, a text version of an exhibition entitled 'Reflections Of Women In Ancient Egypt: Women, Museums and Egyptologists'.

Among the most interesting and exciting objects are: A possible Predynastic tusk figure; Cartonnage showing Sycamore Goddess; and, Pottery Fertility Figurines.

The collection includes a blue lotus chalice, Sistra and over 200 objects from Amarna plus a very fine collection of Bes items and amulets. There's even an ancient Egyptian depiction of Elvis! Actually it's an amulet but it sure looks like Elvis.

The Centre is well set out and makes the most of its displays with good information and helpful notes. The shop carries a small range of collectibles and magazines.

This is a pleasant and informative place to go and stands repeated visits.

Once we had located the centre after parking up (a bit more signage would have been helpful) we made our way into the centre which is set over two levels - upstairs being the room in which the fosus is on life in ancient Egyotian times.

Lots of interesting artefacts are contained within but what helps, esp, when visiting with kids are the volunteers who take the time to explain things and make the exhibits come to life. We were lucky enough to have a a wonderful lady explain the game of sent and she ran through a full game with my two kids who thoroughly enjoyed it!

Downstais is focused on the way in which the ancient folk of Egypt treated death. Once more we wer elucky to encounter a guy who was very knowledgeable and full of facts about the items on show.

For most folks an hour or so is all it takes to get around but it's a fascinating place and for free entry there can be no complaints at all

We visited here ( Saturday 7th January ) after hearing many good things from our student son. On arrival, we met some enthusiastic young staff, two of whom gave us a hands on experience of mummifying a body! For children of such a young age ( 10 or 11?), they had so much enthusiasm and knowledge, it was a joy to see. They deserve promotion!
Many thanks for a great visit. The wonderful artefacts and great staff made the whole visit a memorable experience.

We spent a damp Saturday afternoon with our 5 year old granddaughter in the Egypt Centre at Swansea University. What a fascinating place to visit, staffed with very knowledgeable volunteer guides whose enthusiasm was infectious. Although consisting effectively of only two rooms, the exhibits and activities were displayed cleverly to draw you in and take you through the contrasting themes of 'Death' and 'Life' in ancient Egypt. Our granddaughter was in her element and took a worryingly wrapt interest in the mummification presentation!
And it's all free!

This little, free museum, based in the university has 2 floors cram packed with fascinating artifacts, some of the best specimens I've seen. They have put a lot of effort into making this museum fun for all ages with a number of interactive elements and lots of learning techniques. It is also full of enthusiastic volunteer students eager to share their knowledge. The shop is also very good and reasonably priced with small bits for the children for a couple of pound up to more expensive replicas of artifacts and jewelry. They also sell ex library books on related subjects. Visitors park in the car park at the front of the university which is only a short walk to the museum. You can also walk to the beach from the car park by crossing over the bridge and then going through a gap in the bushes. You have to pay for the car park but it is good value for money, especially if you are visiting both the beach and the Egypt center.

We have visited before but this time we felt it was impossible to get any peace. Staff were following us and asking if we had any questions. Please, give visitors some space. A welcome is great but once is enough! This is a small but excellent collection. The lighting needs attention in both main display areas.
