The Crumlin Road Gaol dates back to 1845 and closed it's doors as a working prison in 1996. After extensive renovations the gaol has re opened as a visitor attraction and conference centre. Today you can take a guided tour of the prison and hear about the history of the site from when women and children were held within it's walls through to the political segregation of republican and loyalist prisoners and learn about why the decision was taken to close the prison.During the tour of the gaol you will be taken by your tour guide to visit the underground tunnel that used to connect the gaol to the Crumlin Road Courthouse, you will get a chance to sit in the Governor's chair, view all the wings from the circle and of course pay a visit to the condemned mans cell before seeing the execution cell where the majority of the 17 men were hanged.

For those interested in Anglo/Irish history the Crum is a must - see. As it's only 'recently' closed (1996) visitors feel less in a museum and more in a prison! Tour guide was informative and balanced. A good place to visit after a black cab tour which usually finishes on Shankill Rd.

Loved this day out! We went with the kids but we would love to go back for a paranormal tour. You get the history with a bit of spooky drama during the tour! We all loved it! Great day out!

The title says it all... The food was very tasty and well presented. Excellent service from the minute we entered the staff were extremely friendly.(lovely Ann) They have really made an effort to make it interesting and to appeal to all ages. There are a few historical items on display which is nice to see. Don't miss out on this... More

Very interesting tour, brings home to you just how bad it was years ago. Our guide Was very knowledgable. The tour is about 75 minutes and went by very quickly. Well worth a visit.

Excellent value for money and really worth a visit. The guided tour gives you a feel for how the prison worked and is all the more amazing for the fact it was a working prison in my lifetime, closing 20 years ago. The hanging room is really eerie and thought-provoking. A real must-see place in Belfast.

Spent an evening doing the tour here, found the staff to have no personality to be honest but the tour and what we saw was ok.

Strangely enjoyable.. very interesting. Seeing where prisoners were hung was very surreal. The tunnel was fab.. wish we could of gone all the way through to the court house. Could of explored every corner of the jail and hospital. Thank you Eion for a great tour :)

Very informative tour of a historic prison. While some of the buildings are no longer part of the complex, there is enough to get a sense of what the prison was like. We went on a cold rainy afternoon, which added to the atmosphere. We ate at the café that is open and the meal is discounted if you are... More
