About
The Crumlin Road Gaol dates back to 1845 and closed it's doors as a working prison in 1996. After extensive renovations the gaol has re opened as a visitor attraction and conference centre. Today you can take a guided tour of the prison and hear about the history of the site from when women and children were held within it's walls through to the political segregation of republican and loyalist prisoners and learn about why the decision was taken to close the prison.During the tour of the gaol you will be taken by your tour guide to visit the underground tunnel that used to connect the gaol to the Crumlin Road Courthouse, you will get a chance to sit in the Governor's chair, view all the wings from the circle and of course pay a visit to the condemned mans cell before seeing the execution cell where the majority of the 17 men were hanged.

An informative and Interesting morning (with teens)
This was pretty fun. My teens love touring old jails and this one didn’t disappoint! Yes there is some technology on the tour, videos and holograms which was not an unwelcome touch. The stories were interesting, and a lesson on the troubles was a good recap for my teens. The tunnel under to the courthouse was very cool. But the crowning moment was the condemned man room, leading to the execution chamber. Very haunting! I do recommend this if you like old jails, took us about an hour to walk through (not listening to every little story).

    Excellent museum
This is a very well presented museum with interactive displays during the self guided tour. We took about 1 1/2 hours to go round. The staff were very knowledgeable and keen to provide additional information. We enjoyed a bowl of soup in the restaurant for lunch. Well worth a visit. Easy to go round the street murals of both sides from here.

    Really enjoyed our informative visit!
We really enjoyed our visit and felt it was good value as we spent 2 hours there and didn't look /watch every single thing. It was a well organised place with a clear system/one way route, and very informative, we learnt a lot. It was so interesting to learn about the history of the place as well as some of the people, and to see the building first hand. The only point for improvement is that there were occasional bottlenecks waiting for some of the gates to open to move into certain areas, but it wasn't a problem for us (could be tiresome if you had children or if it was busier)

Did you know you can have events at The Crumlin Road Gaol.
We had a family event here. What a venue! So accommodating to all our needs. The Matrons Gallery is a fantastic space complete with it's own bar. The real stand out was the staff. Really helpful, lively and engaging and they poured a great pint. Nothing was too much bother. If you are looking for somewhere a bit different to have an event give them a shout.

    SPLENDID THROUGHT
From arriving during a heavy rainfall, to leaving after Sunday lunch in 'Cuffs', the day can only be described as SUPERB ! Our tour guide was a wealth of information and able to answer every question put to him. My only slight critism would be, during the time in the cell of the condemned prisoner , it was extremely tight for space with the high number of visitors. But overall a superb visitor attraction and would recommend it to anyone. After the tour we had Sunday lunch in the 'Cuffs restaurant - again no complaints whatsoever. The food was superb and although the staff were very busy, they had a little time to be able to have a conversation with most diners.

Great place to visit when you are in Belfast. It’s history is relatively recent.
Great experience, a lot of information. The audio guide simply voices what you can read in the attraction or there are videos with the same information so if you don’t mind reading you save yourself some money. We visited in a cruise and did it on our own along with two other attractions and it was definitely worth it and doesn’t take up your entire day.

    Sent down... the Crumlin Road
Fascinating. It's a self-guided tour, round a fairly self-explanatory one-way system. It's worth taking the time to stop and listen to the various hologram 'characters' you encounter around the tour. You do get bottlenecks, particularly going through the condemned man's cell, so if possible avoid going when there's a coach party in from one of the cruise ships. Other than that little gripe, well worth visiting.

One of the best attractions we visited
We used the bus tour to get us to the gaol; handy as it's some distance from the city centre. The gaol itself is amazing, all of the displays were fascinating and the videos of the inhabitants over the gaol's history painted a picture of what life was like for the inmates. The video of Ireland and Ulster's history was particularly good. If you're an English speaker, you don't need the audio guide as the displays and videos tell you as much as the audio guide would. The length of the tour is recommended as around 2 hours, but we spent way longer than that. There's lots of standing about while watching the videos and reading the panels, so you may have to factor that in.

    Well set up
Good bit of history but don’t think the kids enjoyed it. Took about hour and a half to get around. Really well set up and lay out and I did enjoy it. More history than your and personally would have like to see more of the actual prison. Would be good to see more of the cells as they are.

    Well worth a visit
I enjoyed my visit to Crumlin Road Jail, it must be quite difficult to present the place and the exhibits in a way that doesn’t offend one faction or another but this seemed quite skilfully done. The visit was self guided but the information plaques were excellent along with holograms here and there and I learned a lot wandering around at my own pace. The jail is used for events and entertainment parties and whilst taking photos in one area I was having to avoid some balloons that were being gathered in from a previous happening but it’s good that the jail is being used these days for happier reasons than in the past . Having the Wessex helicopter there and an armoured vehicle was a bonus and although the area that you can access is limited, I recommend a visit to Crumlin Road jail.

Really interesting tour round the jail. Harry, our guide was excellent and although I was worried about the number of people on the tour (just under 40) you could hear a pin drop most of the time because he was so interesting.

Very interesting and informative, really excellent tour. Excellent video giving background to the Troubles. Was complemented by taking the black cab tour which is also highly recommended.

We visited with a friend who has mobility issues and cannot manage steps. It would be fair to say that there are lifts but she really could have done with a wheelchair as there is uneven ground, slopes and quite a long walk if you strictly adhere to the one way system. To get into the jail area itself you take a lift from the basement but you then need someone with a code to let you into the jail - it took us a while to find someone to help us.
That said once we got inside it was great and you can really imagine the conditions of the prisoners.

I wasn’t expecting much of my visit to Crumlin Road Gaol and I am so glad I was wrong!

Here you won’t find the typical audio guide tour you are used to in museums, they also have a comprehensible story and characters you follow as you go through the experience. They have special effects and immersive elements that set the attraction apart from anything else.

If you feel sensitive about executions the experience allows you to skip that part of the self guided tour.

This was an interesting place to visit but also sad and thought provoking. We did the self guided tour as the guided had sold out but felt we lost some of the understanding and context setting as it isn’t an audio experience, it is just walking around the prison and watching recordings. The tunnel was good as were the cells and the final cell for those who were sentenced to death. Good value for money

I would not have thought to stop here on my own, but it was included in our tour package so we went. The displays were very well done and loaded with information. They could improve the people flow a little but having the films on continuous loop and letting you enter them as you show up. Instead, there were automatic gates that would only let you in between showing of the films. There were several times that we had to wait for the gate to open but we could see that no one was in watching the film. All in all, a good visit.

Our friend suggested we should visit the Crumlin Road Gaol experience and we were not disappointed.
The tour is well laid out and tells a captivating story as you move from one space to another.
There were so many lessons to learn as we discovered where the word for Wardens came from or what the phrase “has the cat cut your tongue” originated.
The potted history of Ireland is the best I have seen yet.
When we exited the building we felt a sense of freedom, such was the immersive experience.
The meal in the Cuffs restaurant was excellent

My whole family really enjoyed this, including my 3 teens. Exhibits are very informative and hands on while also approachable. You don’t need a guided tour; the self guided one had plenty to keep us busy and engaged.
