The Crumlin Road Gaol dates back to 1845 and closed it's doors as a working prison in 1996. After extensive renovations the gaol has re opened as a visitor attraction and conference centre. Today you can take a guided tour of the prison and hear about the history of the site from when women and children were held within it's walls through to the political segregation of republican and loyalist prisoners and learn about why the decision was taken to close the prison.During the tour of the gaol you will be taken by your tour guide to visit the underground tunnel that used to connect the gaol to the Crumlin Road Courthouse, you will get a chance to sit in the Governor's chair, view all the wings from the circle and of course pay a visit to the condemned mans cell before seeing the execution cell where the majority of the 17 men were hanged.

We went on the Crumlin Road Gaol tour last week. Iain was our guide. It's hard to explain why it was so interesting - but it was. From the moment you are guided into the processing room (where prisoners would have had to disrobe) there's...More

We had a fascinating tour of the Crumlin Road Gaol. Really interesting, but disturbing at the same time. Excellent tour and tour guide. Not an easy place to see but well worth a visit.

We definitely expected more from the tour and, if I'm honest, it dragged. There must be so much that could be said about this prison, but the (English) guide appeared to have been told not to say anything that might have been deemed controversial. In...More

I visited on the back of the TA reviews and was not disappointed. An excellent guided tour gave me a fascinating insight into the Troubles, down to the gallows used to execute prisoners. Creepy but worthwhile.

Didn't know what to expect but found out so much about the prison and some of what happened there. The guide owen could have spoken a little slower and he seemed in a hurry! Maybe allow a little more time per tour as we all...More

it is a bit of a struggle with the stairs my tip is start the day with this tour whilst your legs are fresh - my mistake was doing it at the end of 2 other tours and quite a bit of walking
