Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

One of many fine gates along the walls in Derry. As I was staying nearby this particular gate was my entry and exit point onto the walls. There is a WW2 museum in the tower just outside the gate by the walls.

My wife and I walked the city walls of Londonderry/Derry in September 2013, and saw the Bishop's Gate. There are seven gates total in the city walls, and Bishop's Gate is the one in 1689 that deposed King James II had arrived at to take over Derry. Believing that the city would surrender because he asked for it, James II was replied with gun shots. The brunt of the attacks during the siege were between the Bishop's Gate and the Butcher's Gate in the walls.
The gate that resides here today was replaced in the late 1700's at the 100-year mark of the closing of the gates by the Apprentice Boys during the Siege. There is a historical sign next to the gate telling its history, and staircases to climb up to the wall.
Overall the gate is marked well, but don't expect to spend too much time at any one gate in the walls -- you will take most of your time walking the entire wall length instead of just staring up at a single gate for any stretch of time. A good historical site, but one to take in with the rest of the gates and wall at the same time.

This one of the seven or so original gates built into the wall back in the early 1600's. The wall was one of the last built in Europe. With the invention of heavy artillery, walls no longer offered the protection that they did centuries earllier

The food and waiting staff were excellent. However our experience was totally ruined by a member of stash accusing us of not paying our bar bill out on street. Thank goodness I could prove we had. I was so embarrassed and pur experience was tainted

The Bishops Gate is one of many in the enchanting old city walls in Derry. The walls are just the most magnificent way to walk around the old town. The Bishops Gate is close to the likes of St Columbs Cathedral and St Augustine's. There are numerous information plaques dotted around such as here at the Bishops Gate and there are fine views of the city from above the arch.

Decided to have dinner with the wife here and have to say the food was really tasty. The service was really good too although the only blemish would be it took 45 minutes for our meal and when we received our protein we still had to wait a few minutes for our sides to arrive. All in all though a pleasent night and would definitely be back.

How amazing to see and walk on the old city walls as they were centuries ago. How many feet and how much history was there before mine?

One of the many gates of medieval Derry. It is similar to all the other gates in the town, but there is a small board with info on this gate.

Stayed at the Bishops Gate hotel so naturally I had to investigate the bishops gate. Some great history here, take the time to explore outside the walls of Bishops gate and see the wall placards and read the interesting history of this part of town

Well, Bishop Gate, I'm conflicted. Anything dating from 1789 is well worth a visit, but its a mess. The arch is rounded, and I do like a good rounded Romanesque arch, but above is a great square block with brutal cornicing. The river-god carved face at the apex of the arch is topped with a great overhang block just above like a guillotine. The two faces either side jut out and break the line of the arch where a pleasing semicircle should be. Little square arches off on either side let pedestrians through. Rounded ones would have looked so much better, complimenting the main passage, but these clash with it stylistically. its as if chunks of different structures have been piled up together.
I do like the steps here which let you get up onto the circuit of the town walls. Otherwise its just an interesting mess.
