    Must visit Inveraray Castle
From the booking online to the entry all went efficiently. Staff on site are very friendly and helpful and informative. All the rooms are impressive in their displays, but more importantly the explanations provided through various means make the visit very informative. This is a compact but very impressive display of how the Campbell Family and Earls & Dukes of Argyll evolved and lived. A must see place if in the vicinity of Inveraray.
Thank you for the wonderful review. We're so pleased you found your visit to the castle went smoothly from the moment you purchased your tickets. Our staff are always happy to help and provide information regarding the castle and local history.

    The pride of Argyll.
Inverary has a proud history, home to the Campbell clan since at least the 13th century & later, the Earls & Dukes /Duchesses of Argyll. The building of the house began in the mid 1700s, although the burgh of Inverary was founded in the 15th century. Baroque, Palladian & Gothic building styles were used in the construction of the house, although changes have been made over the centuries. The castles location is unrivalled, overlooking the majestic Loch Fyne, a photographers dream location. Not all of the castle can be explored, after all, this is still the family home of the Duke of Argyll, but, the rooms that can be viewed are both beautiful & interesting, wonderful examples of furniture, paintings, tapestries, antiques & artifacts, all highlighting the history of this grand building & it's proud family. The ornamental gardens are well established & well tended, there is also a woodland walk offering many photo opportunities of the surrounding area as well as the house. In the house, you'll also find a gift shop & tearoom/cafe. I thoroughly recommend a visit to this magnificent property.
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a detailed review. We are so pleased that you had such an amazing visit and felt the interior was so captivating. The castle is still a family home, and we're glad you felt that when you were here. We're so proud of our formal garden and woodland walks, and we're glad you made use of them. We hope you took plenty of photos!

    Lunch stop Inveraray Castle Visit
We spent a lovely few hours exploring the Castle and gardens. A fascinating place, and still a family home. It has a warm, homely atmosphere. We followed the tour inside, assisted by the information cards in each room, and also bought a guide book. This was signed by the Duke of Argyll , a nice touch. The gardens are beautiful, well worth a walk round. We enjoyed smoked salmon sandwiches for lunch in the courtyard outside. Staff were very friendly & helpful.
Thank you so much for taking the time to review us. We're so pleased you enjoyed your visit. The castle is still a lived-in family home, and we're so happy you felt that! It sounds as though you made the most of your visit, All of our guidebooks have been written by the Duchess and signed by the Duke. We do hope you visit us again soon.

    A Very Scottish Affair!
Absolutely loved my visit to Inveraray Castle. The bus ride from Glasgow Buchanan Street Station through some beautiful scenery dropped us off just outside the gates in the delightful town of Inveraray, designed by the Adams family at the same time as the castle in the 18th century. Beautiful grounds, the house felt alive and vibrant with many original furnishings of international significance. Booked the extra tour of the private apartments, held a few days each year, with a wonderful guide. Do go!
Thank you for the amazing review. The journey up to Inveraray has some fantastic views. We're so pleased you enjoyed your visit to the castle and had some lovely walks on the grounds. We're so fortunate that the castle is so well maintained by our fantastic team.

A day spent at a beautiful castle
I loved the day we spent visiting the castle. We spent time indoors appreciating the vast collection of medieval weapons in the armory. Then a short walk around the beautiful gardens which included visiting with the local herd of Scottish highlander cattle. Then lunch in the courtyard was delicious, including a tasty assortment of desserts baked on-site. To work off our big lunch, we took a great hike to the top of a peak on the grounds which includes a "folly" (a small turret built as decoration). The hike is a bit strenuous, but very rewarding with great views of the castle, grounds, loch, and surrounding glen.
Thank you for the wonderful and detailed review of your visit. We're so pleased you enjoyed your time at the Castle and made use of our wonderful formal gardens. We also have some lovely walks on the estate where you might spot some of our Highland Coo's in the fields. I will let the team in the tearoom know that you had such a fantastic experience. The 'folly' is called Dun na Cuaiche and the viewpoint at the top offers panoramic views of Inveraray! The walk can be a little steep so we do advise people to take their time and wear sensible shoes.

    Beautiful castle
Just what castle should be like the exterior looks great, but the real joy is the interior it is beautiful. You are greeted with a smile and that carries on all the way through, the staff were very knowledgeable and helpful. It takes about 45mins to an hour to get round. Shop prices were a little steep. The tearoom was very nice prices were reasonable in there. The gardens looked amazing in their winter flush. Just a quick note if you do the castle then go to the old jail which is just around the corner on the same day you get a 20% discount just make sure you let the girl know at the ticket office in the jail.
Thank you for taking the time to review us. We're so happy you enjoyed your visit to the castle. We're so lucky that our team maintains the castle so well, and you can see the wonderful rooms as they would have been when the castle was first built. Our staff are always happy to welcome guests and share the history of Inveraray Castle. The items in the shop are uniquely sourced and we support the suppliers who provide such quality items. If you visited the jail and you have a receipt then you can also get a 20% discount in the Castle too!

    Worth a visit
The rooms that were set up were amazing. Lots of information and pictures about the family history. Beautiful gardens although these weren’t really accessible to all e.g. wheelchairs but to be fair they do let the less abled in for free. This would also limit the rooms they could see. Would have liked more items with the Campbell tartan in the shop.
Thank you for taking the time to review us. We're so pleased you enjoyed your visit. We are on a mission to make Inveraray Castle and Argyll Estates as accessible as possible, and we value your feedback while we complete these works. While we know it is not a solution to the problem, we have created an accessibility guide which is on our website that outlines what is and isn't accessible at the current time. As you have already mentioned, we also provide free entry to guests who use mobility aids as we know their visit could be impacted by the gravel and historic nature of the property. It is also possible to park closer to the castle entrance. Once again, thank you for such lovely feedback. We hope to welcome you back to the castle in the future!

    My Favorite Castle
Inveraray Castle was the highlight of our Scottish trip. Since my sister and I are Campbells a visit was a top priority. We took the local buses from Edinburgh, spent the night in the Inveraray Hostel and came in a day early just so we could walk around the grounds before our ticket entry the next day. You did NOT disappoint! Everyone was kind - love how the guides said "Welcome Home" when we told them we were Campbells! (we are from the US) I thought the price was fair and we loved the guidebooks and gifts we purchased in your shop. It was the most beautiful castle I have seen - warm and cozy. (I love yellow) My sister loved the Hairy Coos on the estate. Keep up the good work. Hope to return soon. Scotland is amazing. Enjoy your winter break.
Thank you for leaving such a detailed review! We're happy to hear that Inveraray Castle was the highlight of your trip, and we love to welcome fellow Campbells to the ancestral home of the clan. Our staff are always happy to welcome guests and answer any questions you might have. We hope you managed to get some lovely Campbell memorabilia. We're so pleased you had such a wonderful experience and we look forward to welcoming you back to the castle in the future.

    Beautiful Castle
Inveraray castle is a beautiful castle in beautiful grounds. It is part of clan Campbell. Queen Victoria's daughter married into the family, so there was lots of history in the castle. It has been used for filming Downton Abbey Christmas special and other stuff. The tour guide is very knowledgeable. Well, worth a visit, but check the days as it's not open every day.
Thank you Joanne for taking the time to leave us fantastic feedback! Inveraray Castle is the ancestral seat of Clan Campbell. We're so pleased you had a wonderful visit and learned lots. Our tour guides are very knowledgeable and are always happy to answer any questions guests may have. The castle is opened Thursday-Monday, 10:00-17:00. In October our opening times change slightly, and we are open 10:00-16:00.

Travelled for 1 hour and 40 mins to Inveraray castle. Paid £49 entry for a family of six, two adults, four children under 11. Unfortunately weather was terrible, but not unsurprising. We were very much looking forward to enjoying a bite to eat in the tearoom on arrival. Unfortunately the tearoom was takeaway only. Not COVID ready. We paid £28 for tea, coffee, two cakes, one biscuit, two kids boxes and two kids drinks. No discount offered on tearoom prices. No lids for hot drinks. We sat in our car with our food due to torrential rain. Just really disappointing, not value for money. Travelled a long distance and feel overall that it was a waste of time. The castle was nice but we were finished in less than an hour. We ended up going to Inveraray jail to try to justify our journey. It was interesting but another £46 for this visit, an expensive day out. I wouldn’t recommend travelling a distance to visit Inveraray castle at the moment. Scottish tourist sights need to raise their standards.

Hello, Thank you for letting us know about your experience, especially for providing us some feedback on why it did not meet your expectations. We have comitted to being sustainable in our take-away packaging and unfortunately waiting on compostable lids has meant we weren't able to offer you one during your visit. Your feedback has prompted me to speak with our supplier and I am pleased to say we have this resolved straight away. I am concerned you felt we were not COVID ready and would encourage you to email me directly about any issues you saw on manager@inveraray-castle.com . We have worked hard to get our Good to Go kitemark and to keep the whole experience safe and enjoyable for visitors as well as our team. This is why we are only operating a take-away tearoom this season, as our indoor seating area is too small for safe sit-in dining under the current guidelines. I am glad you enjoyed your visit to the Castle, and hope that the new one-way route with the additional rooms was memorable for you. If you would like to visit again, perhaps on a day with nicer weather so that you can enjoy your hot drinks (with lids) in the fosse and take a walk in our gardens please let me know so that I can arrange this personally. Kind regards, Alyce

Beautiful castle

Appauling service in the cafe. My daughter in law ordered a gluten free toastie which they charge extra for and over 20 minutes later the said toastie was given to her. What a fiasco, first they had gf bread, then they didn't, then they found some, the menu states sandwiches and panini are available gf. Because we were sat just outside they refused to bring the food to the table even tho my son was in a wheelchair and not enough space to easily manouver inside. So my poor daughter had to stand in the cafe, to one side, watching food being ordered and delivered for over 20 minutes. No apology just handed to her, and for the extra price the bread was about half the size of a normal slice. Really disappointed with how she was treated

We're sorry to hear about your experience in our Tearoom. Gluten-free products are more expensive to buy, often smaller, and less widely available. All of this is sadly out of our control. We wish to be able to cater to more dietary requirements and will sometimes have to pass this cost onto our visitors in order to do so. Our team will always bring your food to the table and will bring drinks and other items when asked. They are here to help.

My husband and I have visited Inverary in the past, but this summer we took our entire family- 10 adults and 5 grandsons, ages 2-12. It was a really great experience- the castle is lovely with so many interesting things, from the Armory Hall, which wowed the boys, to the gorgeous dining room, recognized by all the women from the Downton Abbey show. One of our sons had broken his ankle the week before we visited and the staff graciously refunded his entry fee since he couldn't see the whole castle. Some of our crew climbed to the tall lookout, and we lunched in town. Certainly a day to remember!

Well, where to start. We tried to go for lunch in the tea room, but they stop serving lunch at 2pm. We had to make do with tasty but watery soup and indifferent cake. Service was painfully slow.
After that we went into the house. It's very much designed to intimidate and overbear, with incredibly over-ornate decoration and no taste. A small part of the house is open to visitors, making the £14.50 per adult entry fee excessive, most of the staff were unwilling to engage and the massive display of arms in the main hall was just thoroughly distasteful. I won't be going back.
It's not their fault the weather prevented any visits to the gardens, but what we could see didn't invite closer inspection anyway.
Overall, thoroughly disappointing and a waste of time and money.

Thank you for your feedback, Catherine. It is standard practice in hospitality to offer a lunch service between certain times. This allows us to continue to provide light lunches until the end of the season, with the small team we have this year, when we would have otherwise had to close the Tearoom entirely. We're glad to hear our soup was tasty, and understand people have different preferences when it comes to the consistency. Our team work at a speed comfortable to them - we don't run a fast food franchise and we like to provide a high quality offering, which does sometimes require a short wait while your order is prepared. As for your review of the house itself, all of the 'over-ornate' and 'distasteful' features you mention are original features designed and created in the 1700's. They're awe-inspiring, but perhaps not to your taste. We have 13 rooms which are accessible on a public tour - the other rooms are reserved for the use of the family, as the castle remains a family home to this day. The gardens form part of one of the most culturally significant designed landscapes in the country and are not to be missed. Although a greater display of colour can be seen during the Spring and Summer months, the gardens (and estate) can be admired year-round. Overall, we're disappointed that you didn't thoroughly enjoy your time at the castle, but hope you enjoyed the rest of your time spent in the area.

This is a beautifully preserved family castle. The Argyll family still live here and open their home to visitors from April through October, really wonderful.

The antiques, gorgeous tapestries and decor was truly amazing!! The gardens were equally as breathtaking, very peaceful to stroll through.

The artwork hanging on the walls were just as impressive, the carvings and paintings on the ceilings as well. There was so much beauty everywhere, it was hard to move onto the next room. This was one of my favorite castles we visited.

I’ve driven past this place for over 20 years, always on a mission to places like Gigha, Oban or Islay. So given I’m forced to play tourist as the weather has scuppered my kayaking plans I thought I’d finally visit. And I was interested to see the place as portrayed in Downton Abbey.

And of course the Campbell’s have other claims to fame. Big fans of Royalty. And not a little scandalous behaviour. Naughty. So I had expectations. Great ones.

Yeh. Well. One should never have expectations. It is what it is. Ye see a few of the public / state rooms and associated grandiose decorations. I’d been enormously impressed with the elegance and style of Mount Stuart on Bute a few days earlier, so Inverary was a little disappointing in comparison. Other than the (expensive) guidebook and the laminated info sheets in each space, there little background on offer whereas the enormously interesting guides at Mount Stuart were more than happy to engage in informed discussion.

Lunch was disappointing I’m afraid. Underwhelming soup, no sandwiches (kitchen closed at 14:00 would you believe).

I commented on this on f/berk at the time and while an apology would have been nice, all I got was an excuse as to why customer service was low on the priority list.

Thank you for your feedback. We did receive and take on board your feedback submitted via Facebook. Your initial concern was that our Tearoom stops serving lunches at 14:00. This is noted on our website, several posts on our social media pages, as well as upon entry to the Tearoom. All hospitality businesses have set times for serving food and, given that the castle itself closes at 16:00 in October, we took the decision that 12:00 until 14:00 would suit most appetites. We understand that you didn't enjoy the soup you were served, and for that we do apologise. It wasn't up to our usual standards, and simply wasn't good enough. Customer service is certainly not low on our priorities. Our guides are immensely passionate about the castle, clan and history that has unfolded here at Inveraray, and are always happy to engage in discussion should one be interested in asking questions. Some visitors prefer to walk around the castle uninterrupted, but our guides are always around for those that want to stop and chat. Again, thank you for your feedback. We really do appreciate it.

It’s a “pinch myself moment” when you first see it; breathtaking beautiful fairytale castle, like no other! The gray/green color of the castle is so unique; it looked emerald green in the rain. Very easy short walk, to the castle, from the village, and very large and well laid out parking area. The grounds, pedestrian walk and castle grounds are pristinely manicured and perfectly maintained; a reflection of the care and love that goes into this wonderful place. From the ticket booth, castle tour guides (including gift shop & cafe staff )they were all consistently welcoming, friendly, and knowledgeable about the castle’s history. Amazing stories that go along with each room, artifacts and wall portraits. The castle is kept comfortably warm inside, so you can make your way about each room at a reasonable pace. There are no uneven floors or steps inside the castle, but some easy stair climbing. I do recommend comfortable waterproof shoes, to walk the glorious gardens and woodland paths; definitely be prepared for unexpected wet weather. There are very clean toilet facilities and free lockers for your belongings. The cafe food was delicious, with ample table seating, and the gift shop was fantastic, with a well curated assortment of very nice items. I spent about four hours to enjoy my visit, but easily you could be there longer; there’s just so much to admire, inside and on the castle grounds. Absolutely spectacular! Can’t recommend it enough.

Inverary Castle is a must-visit if you’re in the area. It appears at first sight like a fairy-tale castle as you cross the stone arched 1 lane bridge when arriving from Glasgow/Dunoon direction.

After entering the well maintained grounds, you will arrive at the carpark. A short walk brings you to the entrance & the main tour route. An external separate set of stairs before the entrance takes you down to the basement level with the gift shop, tea room & toilets.

Inside you can view several rooms complete with period furnishings. A scratch card is available with a quiz for kids to complete & receive a small gift, (a pencil.) There are lots of artifacts to see & short explanations about each room or artifact.

Make sure you head to the tea room for a cup of tea & a clotted cream scone. It’s delicious! Avoid the overpriced sandwiches which don’t taste as good as a service station sandwich. And, beware of the kids picnic set. It’s a total rip-off at 6.75! It contains half a sandwich, a 50p packet of chips, a small carton of juice & a fruit jelly drink in a squeezy pack. It doesn’t even come in any kind of picnic box or castle related packaging, just a brown paper bag.

I would give the castle 5 stars if it wasn’t for the overpriced poor kids picnic box set.

Enjoy & follow up with a visit to Inverary jail in the nearby town.

Thanks for your lovely feedback about our fairy-tale castle! It sounds like you had a great visit with your family - I'm glad to hear you got all the answers to your scratch-quiz and got the prize in our giftshop. I will also let our tearoom know your comments. Good news on the scone front and apologies from us about your kids pack. The kids bag is normally packaged up in a lovely themed bag with activities for children and colouring in to do. I can only apologise that you were given a boring (if lovely recycled paper) bag instead.

Really great welcome and service. Booked online and there is excellent info about accessibility and you can get a free entry in case you aren’t able to get round the whole building, there’s a phone number on the disabled parking signs if you need extra help when you arrive. We took my assistance dog and everyone - staff and guests were brilliant. It was a rainy Monday afternoon and fairly quiet so in fact I was able to take my time and get around everything - even the Victorian kitchen in the basement and delicious shortbread and a cup of tea too!

I think the ticket price is decent value for money as you could spend a couple of hours on the tour.
Got excellent scones from the tearoom, however due to Covid-19 restrictions there was no inside seating, fortunately the weather was good so were able to sit outside.

We're glad you enjoyed visiting the castle and that you made it down to the Tearoom to sample our famous scones. We are working on being able to provide indoor seating again, but need to do it inline with government guidance - and this is currently not possible. We hope to be able to get this open again soon.
