- FMc10 contributionsGreat place to visitWe spent 2h walking around, reading all of the stories. The guides were very good, informative and friendly. It's an interesting place to visit for both adults and children. There was a wee boy running around having a great time with the actors/guides who were dressed up as prisoners and guards. Definitely recommend.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 January 2023
- Linda D72 contributionsExcellent afternoon visitGreat place for a visit. Very informative and the wax figures were so lifelike I actually thought it was real people sitting in the courthouse! Staff were lovely and keen to talk about different aspects of it. We went out of season so there was only a couple of staff dressed up but was still a very enjoyable afternoon. Can be cold so I suggest wrapping up warm.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 February 2023
- Molly3 contributionsMust visit!!!Had just a wonderful time! A lovely little town too! We managed to park very close and had a great audio guide which was really immersive! Signs were fab too if you decide not to use the guide! We were there for a good few hours soaking it all in! And it was fabulous to be dog friendly- as you can see our pup had a great time! Staff were wonderful! Very kind and helpful, and they know some extra knowledge not on the guides! Would definitely come back!Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 March 2023
- VickiLeighton Buzzard, United Kingdom303 contributionsBrilliant day outWhat an amazing place! Really informative hand held audo guides around the jail which closed in 1899 - some fascinating stories. The tour guides who were in character the whole time were so knowledgeable & exuded passion so it made the experience so worthwhile. Thoroughly recommend coming here to view a slice of history of beautiful Inverary.Visited February 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 March 2023
- Alison HRoss-on-Wye, United Kingdom34 contributionsMust visit this place, rain or sun activity. This is the second time I've been to the jail and both times I was not disappointed. The guards in the jail were knowledgeable and enthusiastic, the ladies at the desk and in the shop were lovely. Having worked in a jail I found the place fascinating. Just the right amount of things to look at, read and interact with. Highly recommend using the audio that is supplied, really brings things to life. Great place for kids and adults alike.Thank you so much for your review, 501alisonh! Delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit so much - even the second time around! We hope to welcome you back again.Written 19 June 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 April 2023
- m a132 contributionsPlease go......What a brilliant morning we had here. So interesting and well worth the entry fee. Staff were extremely knowledgeable and engaging. Loved the women that locked my husband in the outdoor exercise yard. She was so funny. The conditions of the jails back then were appalling. The facts about the torture was also a real eye opener. A wet and windy day well spent at this attraction.Thank you very much for the great review! Glad you enjoyed your time spent learning about our pretty grim history and pleased to hear that our costumed staff were able to add to your experience at Inveraray Jail.Written 19 June 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2023Written 12 April 2023
- nicholasfI7659MOTarporley, United Kingdom384 contributionsJustice in the rough days.Imaginative recreation of Scottish Penal System, 18th/19th Century. Gruesome, harrowing. The standards of the day were incredibly harsh on prisoners. The tortures allowed by the law of that day would have the Gestapo reaching to borrow the text book. Truly horrendous. Some light relief is gained by visiting the mock-up of a trial of the era. Some audio material might have helped understanding of the process. The judge was my favourite. The languid half-asleep pose. Lulling defendant and counsel into a false sense of security, until they realise he has been very alert indeed.Great review, nicholasfI7659MO - thank you very much! The times were indeed gruesome and harrowing - laid bare in the penal system of the time. Glad you enjoyed your visit to Inveraray Jail.Written 19 June 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 7 June 2023
- johnny112irelandBelfast, United Kingdom69 contributionsGreat place to visitThe tour is absolutely fantastic, well laid out,the audio sets are really well linked into the cells and the various levels of the jail. You need fit to be able to go up through the various levels the stairs are well worn as you would expect in a building of this age but well worth it. The stories of the various prisoners and their confinement worth taking the time to read in the cells, definately a place you didn't want to be confined in and yet when read of the inmates and their sentences it was hard but fairThank you so much for this great review, Johnny! Lovely experience not having to worry about my son’s behaviour. He thoroughly enjoyed the jail and all the stories told through the audio device. Well worth a visit. Great experience in going back in time, not if you were a criminal, really harsh conditions.
You really need to allow an hour to do this justice, make sure you have enough time on the car parking.

Wasn't expecting much but I have to say this was a great visit! Lots of interesting things to see. Staff were all very pleasant. Liked the staff dressed in the period costumes! My kids enjoyed being locked up by the prison guard. Good fun. It was sad to think of all the hard times people went through in the jail. Those walls could tell a story or two! All in all would recommend, and my kids also enjoyed it.

A bit disappointed with a visit to this jail. The jails vibes a not very pleasant. Maybe not for all, but for my family it is much better to visit a castle or garden.

Me and three children (aged 15, 13 and 11) visited the jail on a rainy day, it was an interesting look around with a good audio tour to keep us informed about the history of the place.

My husband has restricted mobility, I phoned and spoke to Marian before our trip to find out about steps etc .she was so lovely and spoke to me about everything I needed to know.when we arrived we were greeted by a lovely member of staff Sandra who told us she knew I had phoned and held us completely tickets as my husband could only stay on the ground floor.ahe took us to meet another member of staff who told us lots of information about the jail.on our walk around there is plenty of knowledgeable staff who were interacting with everyone.we would highly recommend going a visit to the jail,we for sure will go back when my husband is fitter.

Does the Jail allow dogs inside? (A chihuahua and whippet) Thanks 😀

No dogs inside (I assume assistant dogs are allowed otherwise they're breaking the law) but you can take them in the gardens if you lay house admission fee £12.50 I think). Perhaps give it a miss and just do the free walk up to the watch tower (from the car park), unless you're desperate to do the interior tour.
Inaverary jail just up the road is a dog friendly attraction.

Hi. We wanted to visit on our way to catch the Oban Ferry. However due to Covid our ferry times changed and we'd have a maximum of 2 hours at Inverary Jail.
Will that be long enough, how long do you need to enjoy the venue?
Thanks in advance.
