About
Welcome aboard our small ships, the Hjalmar Bjørge in Oban & the Monadhliath in Stornoway, which are waiting to take you around the islands on your very own island-hopping & wildlife-watching Hebridean Adventure cruise. We also operate guided wildlife day tours by minibus on Skye & Lewis/Harris by appointment, so please do get in touch in advance if you will be visiting to secure your date(s). We cruise the seas & coastlines of the Scottish Highland's west coast & around the Inner & Outer Hebrides out to St Kilda, which are some of the most beautiful in the UK, & probably the richest for the wealth of wildlife and history also. In fact the North Minch is recognised as one of the best places in Europe for watching cetaceans. As well as the whales & dolphins, we regularly see seals, otters, white-tailed & golden eagles, puffins, gannets, red deer, & a host of other marine & terrestrial flora & fauna. We record all our cetacean sightings for the Hebridean Whale & Dolphin Trust.

One of the best holidays we have ever had. Attentive staff and amazing food with a relaxing atmosphere. Shore excursions were optional and wildlife guides and sightings were spectacular

Just returned from the Inner Isles Explorer on Hjalmar Bjørge. We had a wonderful cruise despite the weather. Our Skipper, managed to find lots of beautiful places with a calm anchorage. We explored Ardnamurchan as well as some of the Inner Hebrides, and saw lots of eagles, an otter or two, and some common dolphins, amongst other wildlife. We had an excellent wildlife guide who was able to point out so many things we might otherwise have missed.

The food was absolutely outstanding from a really talented young chef.

I recommend these cruises because there are only a few passengers, and we are able to visit islands and other anchorages which larger boats cannot reach.

I have always felt at home as a solo traveller as fellow passengers get on well together.

The boat is small, which means sharing a shower and toilets, but we all seem to manage.

All in all excellent value.

Thank you so much for the thoughtful words on your experience, and in particular, our welcome to solo travellers. We do find everyone always seems to get on so well after the first evening meal spent chatting around the dining tables in the saloon. So glad you enjoyed the locations you ended up visiting too - the 'adventure' nature of our cruises really comes to the fore when we get tested by the weather, but we usually have a trick or two up our sleeves to find somewhere we can still enjoy no matter what.

A wonderful six days on board the Hjalmar Bjørge sailing out of Oban to St Kilda and the Outer Hebrides. The crew were knowledgeable, friendly, helpful and, along with my fellow passengers, made the trip a very rewarding and memorable experience.
Visiting St Kilda was the highlight, but there was so much wildlife to see and islands to explore, that this trip went well beyond my expectations.
I also should mention that the food was excellent.

We have just come back from a four night Whale and Dolphin cruise aboard MV Monadhliath in the Northern Minch sailing from Stornaway. We were returning customers of Hebridean Adventures having been on a six night cruise on the Halmar Bjorge last year. Last year was very good with a host of wildlife being sited around the mainland, Mull, Jura and the open seas between them but the elusive whales made only a brief show that not everybody managed to see. Hence, a second attempt, and by Jove what a good decision that has turned out to be. Whales sited every single day of our trip. Minke, Humpback and Sei whale. In between there were Common dolphin, Risso's dolphin, Basking Sharks, Common and Grey seals, White Tailed Sea Eagles, Gannets, Puffins, Razorbills, Great Skuas etc etc etc. All that on its own would have made an absolutely great trip but really was just a part of a terrific experience. What made it really special was enjoying it with the terrific team of the skipper Tony, chef Luke and guide Alyssa. All so very good at what they do and welcoming from minute one. And it gets even better!!. We also experienced all of this with six other guests all from different walks of life but with a shared interest in the varied wildlife we might possibly see. Accommodation was compact as you would expect on this type of vessel but cosy clean and fresh. Luke presented us with excellent food throughout the whole trip and catered very well for several differing dietary needs without compromising quality in any way. A truly great experience that had eight guest walking away from the boat with smiles on their faces and a host of great memories.

Many thanks for your thorough review and I am sure it will be most useful to help other future guests get a feel for what we can offer them on the Hjalmar Bjørge. We are so pleased you had such a wealth of wildlife sightings and the three whale species along with the basking sharks, dolphins and bird species are always memorable no matter how many times we get to see them. Than you in particular for your kind words about our dedicated and hard-working crew members.

The highlight of this Hebridean Adventure was actually walking on Hirta/S. Kilda. I had read quite a bit about this archipelago over the years, so seeing the village in person was an meaningful experience. Although this adventure was aimed at wildlife spotting and island hopping, my next favorite parts were the crew and the delicious food. Captain David and Hamish the bosun were experienced and instilled a great deal of confidence in their navigation skills and abilities. They not only were knowledgeable about the sea, the islands and wildlife, but they spent time with us guests on a personal level. While we were near Fingal's Cave, the Captain mentioned to me that this was the area that inspired Mendelssohn. As soon as Hamish sensed my enthusiasm, he played "The Hebrides" for me as I dined al fresco on the back deck. What an experience!
Then the meals! Luke the cook cranked Michelin star-worthy meals out of that tiny little kitchen. The flavors! The textures! The fresh ingredients! Home baked bread almost every day! And we had cakes! Honestly, I took more photos of food than of anything else. Last but not least was Alyssa, who I mentally promoted to coxswain, was a cheerful help at every turn.
The ship had everything we needed for comfort, a well-stocked library, maps and an informed crew to answer our questions, and a chef that can BURN Thank goodness he can cook better than he can Pictionary, but what fun.

Thank you so much for your lovely review and we are so pleased you enjoyed your experience on board. We loved your description of dining to classical music whilst near to Fingal's Cave - and that it makes you smile to remember it. Our crew always try to make that little extra difference and we are so pleased for the kind words you share about there here. Please do come back and join us again sometime.

Amazing 4 night cruise aboard the MV Monadhliath out of Stornoway. We took the HWDT Whale and Dolphin cruise and were overwhelmed by the friendly, professional welcome from skipper Tony and guide Alyssa (sorry if I spell names wrong). We were incredibly fortunate to see a Sei whale, humpbacks, minke. common and Risso’s dolphin, porpoises, basking sharks, white tailed sea eagles and more. We’re very impressed with the responsible manner in which the tour was carried out. Although we managed to get very close to some of these creatures, we never felt that any of them were unduly disturbed by our presence. Tony clearly held their welfare as a priority. The food provided on the tour also far exceeded our expectations. Chef Luke was an absolute marvel, producing delicious food and also adding to our wildlife watching experience with his knowledge and enthusiasm. We can’t praise the whole crew highly enough for jointly giving us a true experience of a lifetime.

You chose the perfect cruise for spotting the weather of whales and dolphins around in the Minch at this time of year so we are glad it did not disappoint! :-) We do take great pride and care in our responsible approach to wildlife watching, as you say, trying our very hardest to minimise any disturbance as much as possible. This is their home and we are just visitors. Thank you so much for the nice words about your crew - they love what they do and we are so pleased you could see that in their work. We hope you will come back and join us again sometime.

The 11-day Atlantic West Coast Voyager aboard the Halmar Bjorge. The wildlife was awe inspiring and spectacular. There were great opportunities for photography. The history of the islands was fascinating. It was, for me, a holiday of a lifetime.
The beautiful western islands seemed like paradise. We crossed the Minch and sailed up the western coast of the Outer Hebrides to visit the Monach islands with their lovely sandy beaches and machair, the Flannans and the extraordinary rocky gannetry. In addition, we took in the Shiants, Gaelic for the enchanted islands with its rafts of Auks. We also visited Lunga, where we were stunned by the nesting puffins and thousands of guillemots on Dun Cruit or Harp Rock.
The crew on the Halmar Bjorge (HB) were very attentive. They were all interested in the natural history of the islands, and they inspired confidence. The skipper found peaceful anchorages and sleeping on board was pleasant. Our journeys to land on the islands via the RIB were safe and no wet feet! One highlight was a RIB tour amongst the Auks on the Shiants. From the small Galley kitchen, the chef produced some very tasty meals, always with a smile. Our wildlife guide was very attentive. She was always to be found on the bow, constantly on the lookout for cetaceans and birds and was keen to engage with all the passengers to ensure that they did not miss anything. Each evening, after supper she briefly went through what wildlife had been seen that day and encouraged everyone to contribute and kept an on-going list of species. I learnt a great deal and as a result consider a wildlife guide on the Halmar Bjorge an essential ingredient.
The HB is a fine-looking boat. There are plenty of places from which to see wildlife. It has been fitted with stabilizers and this reduces the chance of seasickness. Its draft is 4 metres which allows it to get close to the island shores. It is well stocked with books such as the superb, Scottish Islands by Dick Haswell Smith. It is a small boat and therefore the cabins are cosy, and the facilities are shared but all the passengers were considerate and adapted to it!

Hjalmar Bjørge, ‘Atlantic West Coast Voyager’, 12-23 June 2023

The fact that none of the guests on board were on their first cruise on the Hjalmar Bjørge (HB) is a tribute to the reputation that Northern Light Cruising built up over the years. For us it was our sixth holiday on board – we started in 2011 and it was only the pandemic that interrupted our two-yearly return to the Hebridean seas.

We were delighted to find that nothing about the basic concept of a voyage on the HB had changed despite being under new management. Welcomed on board in Oban, having had flawless advice and instruction on parking and travel, we set off towards the west and anchored in an Ardnamurchan sea-loch for the evening meal and our first night, We swiftly became familiar with the three crew and our naturalist fellow-guest and wildlife advisor Irene. We couldn’t fault the route-setting or landing and anchorage choices of skipper Tony, who kept us all briefed at all times. Chef Luke provided delicious and immaculately-presented meals throughout, amazing us with his repertoire and ability to deliver all of this from such a small galley. Finally, Hamish seemed to be everywhere at just the right time, piloting the dinghy, expertly serving at table, while supplying information and anecdote about the islands as required though not neglecting his duties assisting in working the boat. Irene’s light-touch approach to guiding and advising us could not have been bettered.

The nine guests got on well; conversation rarely lapsed and came to include friendly banter as familiarity grew. It is noteworthy that the boat’s layout and the company routine always allows each individual their own personal time and space if you simply wish to enjoy the wonderful fresh air and views the Hebrides provide. We were lucky with the sustained sunny weather and waterproofs were only required on one of our days at sea.

Our aim on this and – hopefully – future trips was to enjoy the islands and their wildlife both from the sea and while walking ashore in remote locations. You know that you have become used to relative isolation when you find Stornoway to have slightly too much noise and bustle, and the traffic on returning to Oban is a slight shock! But this holiday was our best yet on the HB. We completed a circumnavigation of the entire Outer Isles group together with visits to the Flannans (new) and the Shiants (old favourites), dolphins playing at the bows twice and the inevitable boost of massed seabirds – notably gannets and puffins.

Please don’t change. We’d love more of the same next time.

We are so pleased you felt that the Hjalmar Bjørge experience you have come to know and appreciate has not been changed since we took over. The success of the boat over the years and the loyalty of repeat guests was indeed one of the prime reasons we were very interested in her. The weather was indeed very good to you over the 11 nights and we are so glad you got to enjoy so many highlights. Thank you also for the kind words about the crew, we are so delighted to have such a talented team running the ship on each and every cruise. Please do come back and join us again, we will look forward very much to welcoming you back on board.

Wonderful trip to the Inner and Outer Hebrides. Professional and friendly crew and outstanding food and company. Exploring beautiful places off the beaten track. An abundance of wildlife including whales, dolphins (lots of them playing around the ship), eagles and puffins. Will certainly go with this company again and throughly recommend it to other adventurous travellers.
