Description:

Perhaps nowhere else in the world can evoke the power of the romantic past...

Perhaps nowhere else in the world can evoke the power of the romantic past more than Abbotsford, stunningly located on the banks of the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders.

Abbotsford sits at the heart of the landscape that inspired the poetry and novels of its creator, Sir Walter Scott. Unlike the homes of other great writers, this is a house that the writer himself designed and as such uniquely embodies a physical representation of the Romantic Movement that he helped to create. When you touch the bricks and mortar of Abbotsford, you are touching the soul of Scott.

Our new FREE to access Visitor Centre is home to a Stylish Restaurant, Gift Shop and Exhibition on the life and legacy of Sir Walter Scott.

Abbotsford is a great place to visit, even for a sort while if all you want is a scone and a cup of tea in the main visitor building. Venture further and you will experience some fantastic history. Lovely place to spend and hour or two, or all day if you want.

Our family took the Hope Scott Wing for a week and had a fantastic time. The house is something of a Tardis and it takes forever to work out your way around the myriad of rooms. With the cosy interiors, the spaciousness of the lounges and the first class amenities, this is without question, the best self catering experience I've... More

Had a really lovely overnight stay in a beautiful room overlooking the river Tweed. Very warm welcome from Carol when we arrived. Totally impressed by the house. It was like going back in time but with all the modern amenities. We were very lucky in only sharing with one other couple, so had the run of the house really. Felt as... More

My wife and I live in Edinburgh, but hadn't visited the home of Sir Walter Scott. About an hours drive from where we live, there are plenty parking spaces for cars within an easy walk to the Visitor Centre. We didn't stop there (except to buy our tckets), but wandered down to the house to be welcomed by the staff... More

Visited yesterday on an "family open day". Lovely grounds (although would imagine even better in the summer) - all alongside the swiftly flowing River Tweed - lots of walks and excellent photo opportunities. The house itself - the first Scottish baronial of its type - although not many rooms to explore - those that you do have access to more... More

13 of us and a couple of cooks took the Hope Scott wing of Abbotsford house for a long weekend. It was wonderful. The accommodation is very high standard: very comfortable and the kitchen was well-equipped. Also palatial. My bedroom looked out over a formal garden while the bathroom overlooked the river Tweed. It was very peaceful. On Saturday we... More

We drove down about an hour from Edinburgh to the Borders (there is a station nearby). With my friend Rowena, we toured the little castle built by Walter Scott i the 1800s. The study and Library are fascinating, and the armoury and dining room are also of interest. I enjoyed the story of Will Bridie, a rogue who poached a... More

Such an amazing experience. The gift shop and museum alone are worth the trip and then a self-guided tour of the house and grounds, accompanied by an audio device guide and we were lost in enchantment for hours.
