About
Trimontium Museum tells the story of the Roman fort complex at nearby Newstead. Trimontium was a frontier post at the outer limits of the Roman Empire, and served as a base for further incursions to the north. Rediscovered and excavated in the early 20th century, it has produced some of the finest Roman artefacts ever found in Scotland and is also home to the most northerly amphitheatre - so far - found in the Empire. The Trimontium Museum was established over 30 years ago to tell the story of the frontier post and its people, and put some of the finds on public display. The museum has been awarded 5 star rating by Visit Scotland and is the recipient of the Best Visitor Attraction Thistle Award 2023 for South of Scotland. There are weekly guided walks to the fort site and around the town April- October. The Trimontium Museum is a voluntary organisation and welcomes new members to help us tell the story of our unique site.

    Fabulous little museum
Absolutely fabulous little museum. Excellently laid out and presented. Really informative without being too formal. Staff are really lovely and friendly. Also it is dog friendly 🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶. If I could give it more than 5 out of 5 for excellence I would give it 100 . Work every penny of the entrance fee. We will definitely go back.
Thank you- we'll take all the stars you want to give!! Hope your 4 legged friend enjoyed their visit too!

Fun for kids, interesting for grown ups
Really well presented story and artefacts. The children are 6 &4, and they enjoyed the children's activities. Good shop with pocket money toys and bigger presents. Friendly and helpful staff. Visit lasted an hour.
Delighted the kids enjoyed their visit- we always try to keep them engaged and are always doing new things. Come back and see what we're doing soon!

    Trimontium guided walk
We went on the Trimontium guided walk around the town and up to the Roman Fort. Our guide, Geraldine, was excellent, very knowledgeable and engaging. She brought ancient, Roman, Victorian and medieval Melrose to life for us and taught us how to read the archaeology of a wall which was fascinating, and something I will always remember. Thank you to Geraldine and to the lovely staff of the museum. A great start to our holiday in Melrose!
Thank you so much- Geraldine is a real superstar at Trimontium! I will be sure to pass on your very kind words.

    Excellent museum
A small museum in the Market Square in Melrose tells the story of the nearby lost fort of Trimontium. As well as many artefacts uncovered at the site, short films tell the story of the fort abandoned in the second century and of ancient buildings and hill forts in Scotland and the borders. Very informative, well put together and knowledgeable staff. Well worth a visit.
Thank you for your wonderful review and we are delighted you enjoyed your visit. Come back soon!

    Brilliant place to visit
Visited with family. Fascinating place and the very knowledgeable volunteers really go above and beyond to explain it all. It’s quite small but will easily enthral for a hour or so. Will definitely return with a view also to visiting the site itself (which is at a separate location) on a guided walk.
Delighted you enjoyed your visit and looking forward to welcoming you back for one of our walks- make sure you bring the good weather too!

    The Romans In Scotland
If you are remotely interested in the Romans in Scotland then this is the place to go. If you are not really that interested in the Romans in Scotland but like to see Excellent drone footage of Hill forts and Ancient sites in Scotland then it is worth visiting the Museum just to sit and watch the videos alone. They are really Professionally done and well worth a watch. Inside you will find exhibits and artefacts dating back to the Roman era which are really well displayed and Very Interesting. It is not a large Museum but you will find something of interest to see thats for sure. The Museum is situated in Market Square in Melrose a lovely part of Scotland.
Thank you and we are so glad you were impressed with our museum. Our drone photography is all done in -house and we hope to share more of it in the museum next year.Come back and see us soon!

Hands on History - not just for Kids!
We went to the Hands on History event which allowed us to handle original and replica Roman objects, with an informative talk. We made a Roman style ring at the end - I'm 55 and really enjoyed this - not just for Kids! We were also invited to help wash recent finds, and go on a spotting walk - however, we decided to do other activities on those days. If we had not, we would definitely have gone to the other experiences. The museum itself is small, but full of wonderful objects and displays, well worth a visit.
So glad to hear you enjoyed our new experience. Thank you so much for your kind words and hopefully one day you'll be able to come back and have a go at our other activities. 🤩

    Super and Illuminating Museum
A small but brilliantly presented and superbly informative museum, manned (and womanned!) by very impressively enthusiastic and friendly volunteers. Opens a window on Roman and pre-Roman Scotland. Some of the artefacts are thrillingly well-preserved and engaging. It's attractively presented and lit. The films are also very absorbing. Trimontium excavates a whole world of unseen heritage, and the stories it shares linger in the mind. Strongly recommended, for all ages.
Thank you for your very kind review! We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit so thoroughly!

Excellent and intelligently curated exhibition. The films were informative and the displays were superb. I learnt a lot about this little-known episode of the Roman occupation of southern Scotland. Unmissable.
