About
The oldest theatre in Scotland, the Theatre Royal is in the heart of Dumfries and first opened its doors in 1792. It has strong associations with the renowned Scottish poet Robert Burns, who wrote several pieces specifically for its stage. The newly refurbished building includes several new spaces while maintaining many of the historic features, ushering Scotland’s oldest theatre into the 21st Century. Attend one of the touring productions presented throughout the year, which includes live music, stand-up comedy and theatrical dramas. The Guild of Players presents a regular season of four shows as well as a family-friendly Christmas pantomime. Grab a drink at the bar before the show or enjoy a meal from the customised theatre menus at nearby restaurants. Want to get hands-on at the theatre? You can participate in one of the workshops or join our group of fantastic volunteers and help build sets and design costumes.

What a lovely, cosy, old theatre. We went to a 70’s night. The lighting, sound, was fantastic. Fast entry/exit, lovely cosy bar/lounge area. Very well kept. Highly recommended.

What a lovely wee theatre. Staff were friendly. It has a bar where you can buy refreshments. It has 2 levels. The upstairs has a number of stairs to climb and therefore people with certain disabilities may struggle or not manage to climb at all.

Visited this venue on 29th July to see Quo Experience, what a lovely place to visit. All people working inside the theatre were volunteers and they did a great job. From the lady who sold us tickets to the lady serving at the bar a huge thanks. It was a very friendly venue and had a lovely atmosphere. We were made welcome and were given a choice of seating. I picked two seats but the lady serving advised others would be better to see the stage and of course she was right. Show was also very good, my favourite was the drum solo but husband loved guitars.

Attended the comedy event at the Theatre , first time I have been in many years . Recent refurbishment is to the credit of the theatre . My only issue is why when they were refurbishing did they not replace the seats ? Physically people are way bigger nowadays and to subject them to seats from the 1900's is not great and to the determent of the venue .

We went to see "Feis: the Music", a celebration of Gaelic and Scots song from some of Dumfries and Galloway's great young musicians. A one off show during which a wide range of young, local talent was put to the test and came through it with flying colours. Well worth the £10 per person ticket price.
There is ample car parking in Brooms Road car park adjacent to this refurbished theatre. Access is easy into the foyer where volunteer staff meet and greet customers. Beside the ticket desk is a cafe/ bar. Customers can pre-order their drinks for the interval or buy on demand. A small display of costumes and artefacts relating to the theatre's history and past productions is nicely presented. Toilets are clean and tidy and seemed to be easily accessible.
Given the the majority of this productions cast were young, up and coming amateurs of a wide range of abilities the programme was well produced and went at a pace. Plenty of opportunity for audience participation clapping with the beat and joining in "well kenned" songs.
A most enjoyable evening. There is a wide range of amateur and proffessional acts coming to this theatre and the programme is easy to view online. We will be back for the Christmas panto!

This theatre has been refurbished so is now in excellent condition. It is a very old theatre but has very good shows. There is a cafe and a bar that we frequented at the interval. This theatre is well worth a visit.

Great show and a great place to see it in. Quite a small theatre so wouldn't really matter where you sat you would get a good view. Recently restored and run by volunteers and a programme of events with something for everyone. A nice welcome when you enter and there's a small bar with reasonably priced drinks. Just looking to see what i can go and see next
