- JRTurk14 contributionsWorth a trip esp as dog friendlyNice wee outing with the family (5 adults) and two dogs. Loved that it was dog friendly as we were able to wander round with them while still enjoying the exhibits. Parents who are a bit older liked the displays and the spitfire talk. Run completely by volunteers and definitely worth supporting this local museum.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 16 September 2023

- Ellie JLeicester, United Kingdom135 contributionsKeeping history aliveWe came to visit as part of a few days visiting family in the area. I was very impressed at the friendly and helpful volunteers who were there in large numbers. We listened to Peter's talk on finding the Spitfire which was very interesting. There are a lot of different displays - some of which would ideally have some additional information/context. More could also be made of the cafe if there was money available to do so. Well done, you are keeping this history alive for future generations and that is important work.Hi Ellie Thanks for the great review. The museum is a labour of love for all the volunteers and is constantly improving. Feedback is so important to help us understand how our visitors enjoy their day with us. - David M5 contributionsA wonderful experience.Visited for the first time today and was well impressed about everything I saw and the wonderful volunteers who keep the place going - every single one of them. Great exhibits and information is displayed clearly. Brilliant and informative talk on the Loch Doon Spitfire. Excellent exhibits in the Flying Control tower. The Café ladies did a splendid job supplying refreshments with a cheery smile, accompanied by period music. I could go on for ages. I shall certainly be paying another visit to this absolutely fabulous museum.Hi David Thanks for the great reviewWritten 7 July 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 June 2024
- Funex9vfm27 contributionsA really interesting Museum, well worth visitingHi I was greeted by a volunteer who was so knowledgeable. As Ex Army we discussed many aspects of the Museum and it's history. The highlight was the talk about the Mk2 Spitfire, what a great historical story, it's quite amazing what the volunteers have achieved. This is must visit when you come to Dumfries there is so much to seeGreat to hear that your visit was so good. The Loch Doon Spitfire is a major highlight and the short talk on the aircraft is absolutely not be missed. We had a wonderful visit, thank you to all volunteers, especially, Gavin who was painting the Lighting, for his time and knowledge on the Lighting and Meteor. Truly recommend this place and I’m already looking forward to a return visit .Thanks for the great review. - YellowHammer09Manchester, United Kingdom40 contributionsGreat way to spend a few hoursWhat a great few hours we had here. We went as a family of 3 adults and 2 children. Staff were very friendly and made the adults and children welcome. Some hands on activities as well as lots to look at. Lots of interesting information for both adults and kids. The gift shop is also very reasonable prices. The on-site cafe looked good but we didn’t use it. Our 13 year was talking about his day all the way back to our caravan. Definitely worth a visit.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 July 2024
- cunliffe504 contributionsGreat visitHidden gem but well worth a visit. Staff were all amazing and so friendly, lots to look at and talks on the Spitfire that was retrieved from lock Doon. Very interesting. Must try the tea shop before leaving.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 August 2024
- Claire B11 contributionsA must for enthusiastsCracking little museum that is a bit of a diamond in the rough. Some really interesting displays of various aircraft and some war time displays. My 8 year old had great fun playing inside one of the aircraft. There's so much to learn here, I feel like it's one for people who are into aviation. If you are wanting lots of interactive displays with all the bells and whistles you'll be disappointed but if you go with the knowledge that it's volunteer run and has some great history you'll really enjoy it. A must do for me is the talk about the spitfire found in Loch Doon. So interesting and actually made me quite emotional thinking of the history of the aircraft and the men that flew it. Its so clear the staff are passionate about the museum. I hope it can grow in the future. I also must say it was very reasonably priced and the tea room made a lovely cuppa.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 23 August 2024
- Nicola W15 contributionsWell worth a visit plus dog friendlyWe loved our visit to the Aviation Museum. It was showery weather but there were lots of displays under cover to dodge the showers. Friendly, knowledgeable volunteers who run the museum. Spitfire talk was very interesting and it was a lovely well kept exhibit. It was also great to be able to bring the dogs with us too so one of us didn’t have to miss out. Blue Light discount was an unexpected bonus. Thank you for an informative visit.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 August 2024

This museum is definitely worth a visit even if aviation history is not your thing.
Apart from the aircraft (interesting in themselves), the social history and the individual stories of people involved were fascinating and humbling.
The story of the Loch Doon Spitfire was told by Peter, a volunteer involved in finding and recovering the airframe. He brought the Spitfire and its story back to life.
As an entirely volunteer run enterprise the museum merits all the support it can have.

Superb museum with a very special exhibit
I first realised this museum existed wascwhen I was visuting the area for the first time, I spotted a brown sign with a propeller on it, S udxa bit of a Google search for more information, was happy to discover the aircraft they had and decided to visit.
I was visiting the area and was keen to visit.
The weather was swful on the da y I visited, however the weather broke for the whole of the time I was visiting, so I was able to view the amazing outside exhibits.
The star exhibit is the loch doon spitfire which has an amazing story. We were treated to a talk by one of the team that rescued the spitfire, one of only 2 left of this mark, and a veteran of the battle of Britain
I would recomend visiting this museum its amazing

My wife and I loved everything about this museum. It is run by enthusiastic volunteers and they've obviously devoted thousands of man-hours to get it to its present state. Incredible value for £7, or £5 for concessions. Only proviso is that it isn't open every day, so check before you go. There is so much to see that you could spend several hours here.

Drove past in February and saw the aicraft so seeing as the gate was half open, went in. The mseum was closed, but the staff were great and let me wander around the exhibits for an hour or so. the outside exhibits are showing signs of needing money for a bit of tlc, but the spitfire undecover shows what can be accomplished with a lot of work and commitment.

Visited with my family including a teenager and ten year old at the end of August 2022. Staff were friendly and welcoming especially helping with what tickets we should get for entry. It's a nice open museum you can leisurely walk around. It was good to be able to get up close to the planes, engines and such like. Lots of history to learn about for all ages and the the talk about the spitfire was especially interesting. It was fascinating to see some of the things I remember my grandparents having when looking through the "everyday life" buildings (some of which was still under construction). Only slight downside was part of the musuem tower was closed off due to construction / repairs but they were necessary on the grade II building so we can't fault that. Overall good day out and very educational for all ages.

This is a canny little museum however it would have been nice to have at least one plane that the kids could actually sit in. My 5 year old was asking me all the way round if he could sit in one and unfortunately he couldn’t.
There wasn’t much information on each plane or on any the exhibits.
Its ok, canny to walk round but certainly wouldn’t travel too far to go there. There is plenty of picnic tables as there is no cafe there.

Came here knowing nothing about this museum and left full of information about the planes and the airfield and what had happened there during WW2.
Exceptionally interesting story about the Loch Doon spitfire.
This airfield is manned by volunteers all of whom were willing to talk to visitors and answered questions knowledgeably.
There is a wee tea room where you can enjoy snacks and the area is dotted with picnic tables so you can take your own food to eat as well.
Dogs on leads are also welcomed.
Will definitely return on our next visit to the area.

We attended the museums 1940's event on Saturday 10th June. The talks were excellent and the exhibits were fascinating. The level of detail exceeded most museums. The operational records of some of the exhibits I found incredible. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Hello are dogs welcome please?
Written 31 August 2020
Dogs are most welcome at the museum. All we ask is that you show respect to our other visitors and of course clean up anything they chose to leave behind.
Written 14 July 2021
Hi,
We are very happy to have dogs on site.
We only ask that dogs remain on a lead, that you clean up after them if there is any mess and that you take care around our other visitors who may be less comfortable around dogs.
Hope to see you soon

Would you say it's wheelchair accessible and are there disabled toilet facilities thanks
Written 21 October 2018
The exhibits on site are held in a number of buildings. Our new buildings are all at ground level with ramped access (RAF Dumfries, Loch Doon Spitfire and Home Front exhibits) with our older exhibits in our Tower which is split across 3 levels with no wheelchair access to the top 2 floors (Ground = Engine display, 1st floor is armoury and miscellaneous artefacts and 2nd floor is mainly a flying control replica).
Access around the site is currently a mixture of tar paths, tar planings and grass.
There is currently no separate disabled toilet.
Our winter site development work will be extending the tarred areas to avoid the need to be on tar planings, and establishing a disabled toilet for next season, but this work is not currently complete.
Kindest regards
Charlie E. (Director)

Hi. I am afraid that we do not have a cafe.
We do sell teas/coffees and have biscuits and tray bakes on offer, but to call it a cafe would be to stretch the imagination a little far.
Kindest regards
