    Excellent half-day visit
Excellent free local museum, full of exhibits about the local history and heritage of the area. The camera obscura is a small extra charge, but well worth it for the views and the talk by the staff member. All the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. There’s a small souvenir shop, and an interesting garden with lawns, seating and salvaged carved stonework. Would highly recommend a visit if you’re in the are.

    Amazing awesome.
It was really amazing to see that the Camera Obscura is still in use after many years Despite a small charge, it was worth the enjoyment. I looked around the museum itself, plus the gift shop as well. Amazingly awesome!

    Brilliant
What an amazing place. We received an amazingly warm welcome & opted to go straight up the tower to see the camera obscura. We could have just looked around the museum for free, but the camera obscura was definitely worth paying to see - I'm so glad we picked a sunny day so we could see everything clearly. Our host was just perfect: friendly, knowledgeable & humorous. The demo was just brilliant with a mix of local history & humour. If you've not ever visited this place you really should go, its just amazing.

You could spend a long in here
This is one of the better museums in a town of this size. There are exhibits aplenty and interesting to boot. So if the weather is poorly this is a great place to spend a lot of time as it would be if the weather was fine which is preferable if you're going up to the Obscura.

    Great experience
Fantastic little museum, you could spend a long time just looking at all the exhibits. We went up to the camera obscura which was well worth it. The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Incredible to think that a piece of equipment made so long ago still provides such a clear picture. Well worth a visit if you are in Dumfries.

    Excellent display
Came specifically to see the camera obscura which gave JM Barrie the idea to have one set up in Kirriemuir. Luckily the weather brightened up to allow us to view through the “camera”.The museum on its own is worth a visit with a great selection of exhibits . Highly recommended.

When you are in Dumfries and want to find out a little bit more about Dumfries from the early days to when Dumfries became a royal burgh then the place that I'm about to review is the place for you, and that place is Dumfries Museum and Camera Obscura located in Church Street. I visited the museum today and had a good time doing the Dumfries Stories trail where I discovered things that I never knew existed. Overall I enjoyed my visit

Visited in November 22. The staff were very friendly and helpful on what seemed like a very quiet day. They offered to try the camera obscura for us although it should be closed. Unfortunately there wasn’t enough light to make it work. This museum tells the story of the people, the landscape and the environment of Dumfries from prehistory to the present day. It is a very traditional museum with artefacts on display in glass cases and information sheets to tell you about them. It’s not very interactive or engaging. Some of the exhibits have seen better days and are in need of restoration.

Dumfries Museum (and Camera obscura) is a lovely little museum in Dumfries and is well worth visiting!

We had such a warm welcome when we visited and were really impressed by the upstairs galleries - there's only so many stuffed birds and animals I could take in the early history display area on the ground floor.

The upstairs galleries were fascinating - especially the link between the 7 local trades, and the sea history of the town.

We enjoyed going into the former windmill which houses the camera obscura on the top floor - each level of exhibition was interesting...BUT, even though we didn't visit the actual camera obscura on the very top floor...there didn't seem to be ANY information on what one is, how it works and why it's called a camera obscura; which seemed very strange especially when the exhibition on the floor below was all about the rescuing of the windmill and the plans to turn it into a camera obscura. It almost seemed as if the museum expected visitors to have prior knowledge rather than providing that knowledge.

When we arrived we were immediately greeted by a member of staff keen to help. After a look round a little we were then invited to the camera obscura for the tour , it was really fascinating about it . When we got to the top for the camera it was amazing to see the whole of dumfries and beyond , tour was led by a very knowledgeable member of staff who talked through the history ect
