Dropped in to look round and was disappointed to find the gates locked and a sign on the office door open again in the spring. We had visited a long time ago and it would have been nice to refresh our memories . It will have to wait till next year

If you enjoy visiting Castle and Keeps this one is worth a visit. Excellent location with good parking. Not really suitable in many bits for the less able. Read the history before you go.....then you can fully appreciate why it was built where it is. Have the camera ready as the views on a clear day are great.

Castle has fabulous views of the Solway Firth and an equally fascinating history. A short walk from Gatehouse of Fleet but does have a small car park ad a visitor centre - Scottish National Trust property.

Lovely castle wich is very well maintained, all facilities are very clean & tidy best of all dogs are allowed entry FOC £4.50 each adult which we were more than happy to pay for especially as our dog was allowed in. Small car park but it wasn't busy the day we visited. The lady who worked there was lovely, she... More

Just had to visit this historical site as it has links with my ancestors past. Mcculloch. I Wasn't disappointed ,the views are outstanding and being there touched me emotionally despite the outrages accounts of the Mccullochs. At one time you could buy Mcculloch key rings ,whisky glasses etc which were good sellers, however not sure if they still do this... More

What a fab castle full of nooks and crannies. Well preserved. Very tight spiral stairs to reach the higher levels so not for everyone. Well worth the climb as the views are stunning. Plenty of information boards onsite. We enjoyed our visit.

There has been a Cardoness Castke in this are since 1220. Cardoness Castle is a well-preserved 15th century tower house and has a commanding position overlooking the countryside near Gatehouse of Fleet. You can't fail to see the castle from the A75 between Dumfries and Stranraer. Originally, Cardoness Castle had a position by the sea, but land reclamation has now... More

The castle is at the top of quite a steep hill so be prepared for that before visiting, especially for more elderly people or those with pushchairs. The castle itself is more just a tower house but it is still structurally sound and looks complete from the outside. Inside there are plenty of rooms to explore and it seems huge... More

Cardoness Castle, Gatehouse of Fleet, Castle Douglas is just a bit off the A75 on B796. It is well worth taking the time to look it over. It contains more architectural details eg. niches for silverware, books, household items than some of the other towers we visited. The view from the top is spectacular as you look off to the... Went in here just because we were passing and had a spare hour. Castle looks tiny but there is so much to see once inside. Was one of the kids favourite castles by the end of our visits - the ability to roll down the steep green slopes added to the attraction I have to say. Loved the info boards... More
