Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Really Informative Visit to Learn About Bagpipes & Kilts
We walked over to the kiltmaker’s shop where they had enough chairs for all of us to sit. Our presenter about the bagpipes was waiting for us. He has had the honor of playing for Queen Elizabeth before! I now understand how the bagpipes work, and this gentleman played several songs for us. He was very humorous and had us laughing. He showed us his training instrument called a chanter which bagpipers still use when learning a new song. They have to perfect the melody before actually moving to the bagpipe itself because of the effort it takes to sustain the air in the bag. Fascinating! Our second presentation was on the history of the kilt and kilt-making. A young woman shared with us the evolution of the quilt to today’s quilt. The business is thriving, and they have established a Young Kiltmakers’ Guild in order to preserve the craft. Gordon (of the company) has collaborated with a number of institutions and companies to create tartans. They even had a collaboration with Microsoft to create the X-Box tartan. Really informative sessions to day which are icons of Scotland - the bagpipe and the kilt.

    The whole nine yards☺
Long before the internet, I’d heard this phrase originated from the construction industry, where a cement mixing truck would bring in nine yards of concrete. With common use of the Web, I found another source. The whole nine yards is a colloquial American phrase meaning “everything, the who lot.” In America, its first usage was the punch line of an 1855 Indiana comedic short story titled “The Judge’s Big Shirt”. Imagine my surprise when visiting Gordon Nicolson Kiltmakers for a kiltmaking tutorial. To demonstrate how a kilt is made, the lecturer rolled out a length of wool and asked for a volunteer. A vivacious member of our tour group jumped—literally—at the chance. She was instructed to lie down at one end of the unfurled cloth, then to roll over and over clutching the loose end of the cloth. With help, she stood, looked as though she’d gain quite a few pounds. The narrator then began folding pleats half an inch at a time. The amount of cloth shortened around the volunteer’s waist. The volunteer helped the narrator—along with other volunteers—to hold the unfurled cloth at waist height. The length was measured. Voilà! Nine yards to the inch. It was explained that the cloth is doubled, then pleated all the way around. To make a kilt for an adult man requires “the whole nine yards.” Although a wool kilt is stylish, it isn’t practical in Florida’s heat. I did, however, purchase a stylish gray lambswool scarf for unseasonably cold in January and February, two of Florida’s three seasons. The third season is summer☺

All turned out perfectly! Thank you.
After various “hiccups” in both make of tartan trousers and kilt hire Gordon and team rallied and all turned out perfectly. There may have been some staffing issues that caused the initial problems but Gordon and staff went out of their way to correct all. We had a perfect wedding day and thanks to all at this shop. Highly recommend!

Recently purchased a made to measure kilt for my daughters wedding. Although the purchase was made during coronavirus lockdown the process could not have been easier. The 'how to measure' demonstrations on the website are excellent, so much so that my kilt fitted perfectly when I collected it. Additionally, the assistance afforded by the shop attendants via email could not be faulted. Finally, collection day was made simple with all the expected coronavirus protocol put in-place from the moment I entered the shop. Overall an excellent experience from start to finish - i would not hesitate to recommend Nicolson Kiltmakers .

After reading reviews of Gordon Nicolson Kiltmakers several places, I decided to make an appointment when we visited Edinburgh in August 2022. My visit was a highlight of our trip. I'm a piper and I needed a new kilt as my existing kilt shrank a bit during COVID lockdowns (funny how that happens--so did some of my trousers). The measuring and fitting was expertly done by very professional friendly staff, the selection of tartans was exceptional, and the MacIntyre tartan I was looking for was the prettiest I've seen. My kilt arrived in time for Christmas piping gigs; it is absolutely beautiful and the craftsmanship is amazing. Kiltmaker Sarah did an excellent job. I look forward to wearing it for many years. I give the highest recommendation to Gordon Nicolson Kiltmakers.

Fantastic service from GNK. After putting on a few pounds in the 20 years I’ve had my kilt, they managed to work some magic and expertly managed to add some extra material, you would never know. And I will hopefully get another 20 years of wear from it.
Thanks to all at GNK

Everything about my experience with Gordon Nicolson Kiltmakers was ideal: outstanding product, expert staff, great customer service. I was in a hurry due to travel arrangements, and they were able to work me in with a tailor on short notice. That person was skilled, courteous, and answered all my questions. There was a bit of a backlog on orders because everyone wants highland wear from their shop, but the order arrived exactly when promised and carefully packaged. When I opened it, I could not believe the quality. I am now the proud owner of tartan trews and a true tweed jacket, and could not be happier with my purchase. I even own a kilt from another kiltmaker on the Royal Mile, but Gordon Nicolson is my shop of choice.

After my previous usual kilt hire place closed down, I checked several reviews and web sites before choosing to book a fitting at Gordon Nicholson for a combined 30th & 60th birthday ceilidh. I was not disappointed, quite impressed in fact. The first gentleman who fitted me was most understanding of my desire to combine both my African and Scottish heritage in my outfit: in the end I wore a ghillie top for the first half and then switched to a cooler dashiki shirt for the second. When I came to pick up the kilt, I was a bit stressed as I’d not been able to find my merino kilts socks and the second gentleman assisting me very kindly threw in a complimentary pair “just in case”. The kilt itself was very comfortable, in pretty new condition, and fitted my now more relaxed waistline perfectly. It was great for dancing in. I’d heartily recommend Gordon Nicholson’s for kilt hire and I shall definitely be hiring from them again.

Bought a full made to measure, highland wear package at over £1800. When it arrived the waistcoat was huge and the jacket was unfinished (although we didn’t know it at the time). The kilt was lovely though. Had to leave the waistcoat to get remade. Five months of silence and then had to chase up. They posted out the waistcoat to save us a journey. We received it only to find it hadn’t been touched - it was exactly the same! Sent photos to complain and was told they would be in touch - heard nothing and had to chase again. Finally got an appointment to get remeasured and they said the jacket button’s weren’t fixed properly and needed attention. How they let a jacket leave the shop unfinished and messed up the measurements for the waistcoat who knows? Made to feel that we were an inconvenience to them and would echo what others are saying about poor customer service and workmanship. It was definitely not the bespoke experience they would have you believe.
