Edinburgh is a fascinating, impressive city, and this tour really delves into its richly layered and textured built history. Commencing at the northern end of Waverley Bridge, and wrapping up with the Scottish Parliament Building at the east end of Canongate, this satisfyingly lengthy meander through the Old Town reveals the geological processes and historical events that have shaped the city’s distinctive form and fabric, and its rich panorama of architectural styles. It encompasses its prehistoric origins, formal establishment and growth in medieval and early modern periods (when buildings as high as 14 stories were built within its defensive walls), the effects of Scottish Enlightenment and the planning reforms of the later 19th century (which saw major street improvements, such as the serpentine Cockburn Street) and more recent additions to the palimpsestic urban scene. These include the stunning, Corbusian, Museum of Scotland building, residential blocks by Richard Murphy Architects, and the Scottish Parliament Building – the latter designed by the Spanish architect Enric Miralles, but like so much of Edinburgh’s architecture, responding to, and referencing, Scottish architectural traditions, spirit, and sense of place. As a relatively well-informed sightseer, with a strong interest in architecture, I found the tour wonderfully informative and entertaining, but certainly feel it is sufficiently elastic to appeal to a wide range of audiences, including those with perhaps more of a passing interest in the subject. Olga, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable, and clearly relishes sharing this in a lively, engaging style – inviting observations, posing questions, and brandishing maps and drawings to bring the buildings, and their design programmes, alive. Highly recommended as a launching pad for further, self-guided (or open-topped bus) explorations of this remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site, and worth every penny!

We loved it all! We did the New Town tour earlier in the year as part of Doors Open Day and really appreciated it. This was a treat for my husband's birthday. We live in Edinburgh, know a bit about the development of the city, and it was fantastic to hear how the different social, political and economic events of the past are reflected in the architecture. Our guide was excellent in being willing and able to answer our questions and discuss the aesthetics of different buildings. We're looking at our hometown with different eyes.

We had a private tour just for our family. The guide was great with the kids, but me and my architect wife also learned heaps about how the New Town developed. The historical timeline print out was very helpful, and the entrance to the private park was a really nice touch!

Me and my hubby love architecture but don't really know much about it. On this tour our guide Olga was amazing at explaining the buildings and architectural influences in a very relatable way. We now know so much more about the neoclassicism and can't wait to apply our new savvy on a trip to Paris! ps you also get to see a private New Town park on this tour!
