Neighbourhood: Stockbridge & Dean Village
Just downhill of New Town and attractively straddling a river near the elegant Royal Botanic Garden, it’s small wonder that Stockbridge became one of the city’s first hip neighbourhoods. It’s now one of Edinburgh’s most desirable, though many bohemian touches have fallen away as its residents have matured and the area has gentrified. Some second-hand shops cling on, but mostly residents display refined tastes in basement bistros, gastropubs, coffee and antique shops, boutiques and delis and at the Sunday farmers' market. A pleasant ten-minute walk away, along a leafy riverside path beside the gurgling Water of Leith, lies Dean Village. This sleepy neighborhood of medieval half-timbered houses still retains much of the village feel it had when watermills plied their trade here. Beyond, the wooded riverside path feels even more remote as it climbs to the sculpture gardens of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

Dean cemetery is in a beautiful location near Dean village but is a bit of a hike uphill. This is a huge cemetery with lots of influential, important, interesting people like Elsie ingles, John Bellamy, Henry Cockburn, Agnes Henderson Brown, people involved with Queen Victoria, people involved with William Burke are all buried here and many more. It is worth doing a bit of research beforehand to find out exactly who is buried here and seeking them out. I wish there was a map or something as a guide, I visited at least 5 times, in search of specific memorials and still haven't found them all but there are beautiful interesting monuments but it's the ones that don't necessarily stand out that are worth seeking. There are no toilets that I could see in or around Dean cemetery so I was always on a mad dash to Princess street to find a loo, sometimes having to cut my visit short which was frustrating. But if your into historical graveyards, this is a must see.

Having recently learned the story of this power-couple, I put finding their graves high on my must-see list for Edinburgh. We had some difficulty finding the grave,as we wandered into the smaller section at first. Once we found the main entrance and the keepers, we asked where they were buried but they had never heard of this couple or that there was anyone connected to Canada buried there. We provided a date of death and within minutes we found the marker. Oh, we were so excited! I am hoping that this grave will become more well-known, as their memory and work deserves.

Dean Cemetery is quite big and beautiful. This is the kind of cemetery that you like to walk with wide paths and beautiful vegetation inviting to a relaxing walk and admire some stunning headstones. It is a very pleasant, tranquil and calming place.

This graveyard I'd very well looked after In comparison to some other graveyards further out of the city. I did not see any overturned or damaged headstones on my visit here.you can see a pyramid in here, okay its not a real one but a gravestone shaped like one. Also this graveyard is near Dean village which a nice place to visit on a nice day. Only grumble I have its that the cemetry shuts at 5pm. But I guess thars why the headstones are not in a sad state of disrepair like some other cemeteries in other parts of the city which was sad to see.

One can take a short cut to the gallery by walking through this very large cemetery that has been very well maintained. There are graves that are very dated as well as very recent ones. It is tragic to see how many young lives were lost. Some tombstones include the professions of the deceased and there is one artistic looking tombstone belonging of course to an artist. It is a bit eerie, so helpful to have some company with you. A humbling experience.

This is a beautiful cemetery. If you are in Deans village make sure to visit. So peaceful.
There were barely any people there, and Dean Village is a must to walk around.

Not everyone's cup of tea but I think it shows an interesting insight into 18C and 19C social history. A guided tour is best although it is possible to find you way around without a guide. This is a bit harder since there is no known map and some of the people mentioned on the headstones may not be well known to international travellers. Best approached off the Queensferry Road and the small path leading down to the Dean by the Dean Bridge. There is only one way in (at the time of writing) so it is a bit of a hike to walk around to the Museum of Modern Art which backs onto it. Could take 2 hours to walk slowly round and Google the names whilst you walk. Look for the colourists and some of the more famous names and larger headstones backing on the wall with the Museum of Modern Art at the back of the cemetery. Check the website for opening times.

Dean cemetery is a Victorian cemetery located in the tranquil Village of Dean. Amazing Gothic architecture combined with mature trees with overhanging moss transforms this cemetery into a tranquil yet eerie oasis. Amazingly you can still purchase a plot at Dean Cemetery. A must view is the Gothic tombstone of Norton McGee the last chieftain of Clan McGee. Jolly Chriss

From the point of view of a visitor (as opposed to a mourner) this is a beautiful and peaceful cemetery to explore. We actually sent more time here than at Modern Two. Wonderful monuments and memorials, both grand and humble, and well cared for grounds.

So you are probably visiting national Gallery of modern art 2...but take 30 mins to have a quiet stroll in the Dean Cemetery just through a gate.
It is a beautiful haven of tranquility and a testament to the monuments built by wealthy edinburgh residents over a couple of hundred years.
There aren't any really famous graves....unless you know your Scottish history really well...but that doesn't make it any less interesting.
A great, interesting walk!
