Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

- Carter HarrisBoston, Massachusetts1 contributionGreat venue and comedians!Great comedy venue! We saw the Thursday night "Best of Fringe" show, and the assortment of comedians was great and quite funny. The host was also great and had some good banter with the audience. Comfy seats and a great atmosphere, would recommend!Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 26 October 2023
- BryanYakima, Washington3 contributionsSmall, intimate, edgy, hilarious.George was a fantastic MC. Lots of great energy by the time he introduced the first comic. Small, intimate room but not too much pressure on the folks in the front row. Friendly and fun but edgy and hilarious. So cheap for an hour of laughs.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 27 October 2023
- Lisa B1 contributionLOLHilarious show! I'd recommend to anyone! My cheeks still ache from laughing! If I'm ever back in Edinburgh, I'm going here again! Even if English is your 2nd or 3rd language, you can still understand everything.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 October 2023
- Leo B2 contributionsVery good experience at the Monkey Barrel ComedyVery good host, a performance itself. 4 guests comedians at Friday 27 oct. 1st one really good, then two performers of lesser quality but still good and last one was the very best. Fast, selfreflecting good humor, great!Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 October 2023
- ciribobsStockport, United Kingdom32 contributionsGreat engaging night with a room drowning in laughterLove Edinburgh and love The Monkey Barrel. Such a great night and by far the best comedy venue in the city. Very cool vibe in the bar area and very organised in relation to getting a drink. The 4 comedians were superb and very skilled at incorporating their set to fit the audience. The comedian introducing them was masterful and extremely engaging with the crowd. It's right on the royal mile and was hands down my favourite night. Laughed until it hurt.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 October 2023
- Graham9 contributionsMonkey Barrell Comedy a must visitWe attended the 5pm slot on Saturday night 4th Nov 2023. The staff were friendly and the venue was perfect cosy and underground in what looks like an old vault, with a nice sized bar and reasonable prices attached to it. All of the staff were awesome and helpful. The compare and acts were brilliant . I would highly reccomend a visit whilst in EdunburghVisited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 November 2023
- JLD199013 contributionsA MUST DO!!!!Went to the 9pm big show on Sat 4th Nov and it was absolutely brilliant! all the comedians were really funny, venue was in a great location and great staff!! Couldn't recommend going highly enough! My wife isn't the biggest stand up fan but even she said it was her favourite thing we did in our long weekend in Edinburgh.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 November 2023
- SofieStavanger Municipality, Norway23 contributionsI laughed, idk what else you expect from a comedy club review 🤷♂️Decent venue, seats are comfier than they look. The comedians were funny and the show was put well together. Highly recommend (I'd go again), though I went with my mom so depending on the type of comedy, I recommend the show and venue but not going with your parent/s 👀Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 24 November 2023
- Darren G2 contributionsNice venue & good ComedyWent last Friday Eve for the 7pm opening with friends. Venue is easy to find off the Mile. Bar wasn't packed and served quickly then was led through downstairs to the stage area. 3/4 acts I found funny. Well worth the £14 ticketVisited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 25 November 2023
- Lucy442014Watton at Stone, United Kingdom41 contributionsGreat comedy night, a variety of different acts.We went to the 9pm showing which contained 4 different acts all with a different style of comedy which made for an entertaining show. You all wait in the bar before the show starts then it is a first come first seated arrangement- we had the honour of front row seats! The host and comedians interacted with us well and we didn't feel we were put on the spot too much which made for an enjoyable experience. Would definately recommend for a fun night with a good few laughs!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 November 2023

Me and my partner visited here after googling comedy shows in Edinburgh, we needed a earlier show as we where travelling home that night. We come across this place, as it was the only comedy place that had a 5pm show. It was £20 for the two of us, which i thought was good value, you can also add drink packages on to your tickets. When you arrive you get shown to your seat where you can order food and drinks via a app. The show was on for 90 mins with no break, this was Probably because there was no need to queue at the bar half way threw for a drink. There was 5 acts (including the main host) and they where all hilarious in different ways. My personal favourite was a man called Steve Bugeja, who mentioned he had a solo show in Edinburgh the next night, if we where there until then, we would of defo went to see him. It was the first time i got picked out from the audience and involved in one of the comedians jokes, and it was all in good fun, there not mean with it. Such a lovely little venue, i highly recommend!.

Great fun 2 hours! The host joked around with the audience a lot, was very funny. There were 4 acts and Rachel was definetly the best one, she hosts the podcast all killa no filla! Would highly recommend, the room was PACKED. I got moved seats twice due to lack of space. But ended in the best seat. The only tiny thing is the mojito I had was horrible, burned my throat with fake lime, don't order that and you will be fine.

Every year, Monkey Barrel always has fantastic shows in the center of town. What I've always loved is they try their best to make the slots for the acts as profitable for them as possible and as open to the public as possible no matter how much money they have.
If you think an act will sell out, you can buy in advance which I would recommend for shows you definitely don't want to miss out on to avoid disappointment but then you can see shows if there are seats free after paying customers and can put some money in a bucket at the end for what you felt the show was worth if you want to.
Its a great system and I've seen many many great acts!

Me and my husband went to see sherlock holmes improv last night and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The comedians bounced off each other and kept us highly entertained for 2 hours. They came back on and did about 20 minutes of normal improv around a word given from the audience. We will definately be returning to see some more improv

Went to the Sunday night big show for a friends birthday. We had pre-ordered Prosecco and we had great seats. The host George was fab, really got everyone involved and created a great atmosphere. We then had 4 other comedians come on to do a set. Each of them brought something different to the stage. We were all in fits of laughter to each of them. Special mention to Amanda Hurst who’s was new to the club and was great, such a good set!
You could order drinks with an QR code so it made everything easy and safe. Great night - thank you!

It was my first time at a comedy club and I had a great time! We paid 3 pounds for a ticket and since we were a bit early we were seated right at the front, which made me a bit nervous at first to be honest. It was an event where new stand up comedians could show there sets and where established stand up comedians could try out new stuff. Itm was a great mix of comedians and I laughed a lot. Overall it was a great experience and I would highly recommend it!

We had a great couple of days in Edinburgh but it can be pretty pricey. It was our last night and we were looking for something we could do with our teenagers, 16 & 18.
We’d passed by Monkey Barrel Comedy and a quick google search showed they had a student comedy competition night on. Tickets were only £3 each so wasn’t really expecting much but thought for that price, it’s worth a try.
Well….we bloody loved it. You start off in the bar area above and they let you know when it’s time to go down for the show. Each party are escorted to the seats so there’s no scrambling for the best seats.
They have an app which you can download and then be brought drinks and snacks all night. This feature was super and all the staff were so brilliant and it was well organised.
The toilets were clean and easily accessible.
It doesn’t look much from the outside but it had such a nice vibe to it. I’m from Manchester and I would say it had a Northern Quarter feel to it.
The student comedians were really entertaining and my teenagers loved the night too! Bonus, us parents were able to enjoy an alcoholic beverage. It was hard to find a watering hole where we could take the kids and be entertained. It was so worth the £3.00. I’d have happily paid more. I’d definitely recommend a visit if you’re in Edinburgh and want a relaxed, entertaining and funny night.

An absolutely fantastic night out! We visited on July 22nd. With it being a new material night and the comedians having been out of action for so long, we were prepared for it to be a bit hit and miss, but everyone was great!! Our host did a fantastic job of warming up the crowd and putting everyone at ease, and every single one of the four comedians we saw had us laughing until our cheeks ached. Great vibes and great value for money - would highly recommend and we hope to return.

We visited here on Friday 8 th July for the 9pm show.
We arrived at approx 8.20 , checked in and enjoyed a couple of drinks in the quirky bar downstairs.2 pints of beer £11.
Just before 9 we was then asked to go down another floor to we’re the show was .
The compare and the 4 acts were all really good.
Of course if you sit in the first rows you’re very likely to get picked on.
A fantastic night .

Cute little venue but we must have missed the comedy. Drinks were well priced. It felt like sitting in someones living room it's so tiny, in a nice way. We wouldn't return sadly.

Hi there. I am coming to Edinburgh to celebrate my 40th birthday in June with my husband and three children who are 19, 18 and 13. Is my 13 year old allowed to attend Monkey Barrel with us all? Kind regards.

Hi , does the Venue allowed 6 year old , any show , gig allowed 6 year old ?
Written 4 May 2019
Hi, so all under 18s must be accompanied by an adult, and we have a 16 and over guideline, with the ultimate judgement call left in the hands of the under 18's guardian. 6 could be a bit too young, as all of our shows feature adult content. We do not have a children's show on our program.

Hi is the venue near other nightlife? I'm trying to plan our weekend in Edinburgh & wondered if I should book tickets for the Friday night then we could go for drinks afterwards if there are pubs/bars nearby..Many thanks
Written 6 April 2019
Hi, thanks for getting in touch - it certainly is. We are right in the middle of the Edinburgh Old Town, which is the hub of the capital's nightlife scene.

Is the venue accessible? I can transfer from my wheelchair. Thanks
Written 26 May 2018
Yes. There are a couple of small steps but we have a movable ramp which the team would be very happy to get out for you. Just let us know in advance and we can be ready for you.

If I book for 11 people for a Saturday evening, do we get allocated seats or is it first come first served on seating? If so, any advice on how soon after doors open we would need to be there to sit together. Thanks!
Written 10 May 2018
Hello!
You will have allocated seats. Our doors open at 7pm and we ask if you can be prompt for arrival as we do not allow people enter once the show starts at half 8.
