Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

- Megan J5 contributionsAbsolutely hilariousWhat a brilliant experience! Perfect in every way. Brillaint comedy show, totally underrated. I couldn't understand why people aren't in a queue outside the doors. The best experience of our trip. A huge thank you to the comedians, just awesome.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 3 December 2022
- JoshLondon, United Kingdom6 contributionsFull of laughsI went with my girlfriend to the 7pm on Saturday 3 December 2022. It was such a fun night, the comedians and host were hilarious. If I’m back in Edinburgh I’ll definitely be going again. The service was also great, you could order drinks on your phone during the show so you didn’t miss any of the comedy. Would 100% recommend (although only sit at the front if you’re feeling brave!).Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 December 2022
- Andrew1 contribution10/10My favourite comedy club I have been to! Friendly staff, great acts and an amazing beer selection. We went to see the Christmas show (2022) and loved it. George was a brilliant compère and Chris Forbes was an outstanding headliner! I would 100% recommend it here- the beer selection is brilliant with local breweries and importantly for me a great selection of 0-0.5% beers (try the IPA from Jump Ship Brewing). Will definitely be back next time we are in Edinburgh!Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 December 2022
- Victoria2212 contributionsA first and a brilliant eveningNever been to a comedy club before but really enjoyed it. A great evening out in Edinburgh. The club is just off the Royal mile and we booked for the 9pm show which included 4 comics. They were all excellent, as was the compere. Would highly recommend for something different to do on an evening visiting the city.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 December 2022
- Albin3 contributionsGreat comedy in a cozy venueWell-organized comedy club in a great location. We went for a 17:00 show, and it was probably my favourite event during our stay in Edinburgh. The four acts we saw were all phenomenal, and the host did a fantastic job keeping the mood high in between. The seating arrangement is well thought out, and you can order drinks and food for delivery to your seat during the show.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 January 2023
- NorwichjaseSprowston, United Kingdom121 contributionsBrilliant brilliant brilliant, please go - 5pm show was brilliantThis was by far one of the best experiences I’ve had in Edinburgh. We found it by chance looking for something to do the following day on trip advisor. We had 10 minutes to get ourselves to the club and quickly booked tickets. The 5pm show was amazing, it was a bit of a book end show - with the starting act and last act being the best - but the experience was brilliant, it was very well organised and the table service helped make it. Absolutely brilliantVisited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 January 2023
- El5982 contributionsHilarious and very enjoyableAbsolutely brilliant show. Every act was very different. Tears were flowing down my face!!!! Staff were fab also, couldn't fault anything and very reasonable. We had a group of 10, communicating was very easy and everyone of us loved it.Visited January 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 30 January 2023
- Blondeblogger3 contributionsTop tier nightAmazing and hilarious night. We are from Belfast and went to the 9pm Friday night show! Will definitely return on our next visit to Edinburgh :) all comedians where hilarious. Great table service and atmosphere.Visited February 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 3 February 2023
- Alexandra H4 contributionsNot to be missed! What a night! A last minute recommendation from a friend led us to booking tickets for the 9pm show on Saturday 4th Feb and it was amazing! Non stop laughs. You can stay in your seat for the entire set with handy QR codes on your tables allowing you to order snacks and beverages from your seat so you don’t miss a thing! Easy booking system and can use contactless payment. Get there early as seats are first come first serve. Very well organised and the acts are second to none. If you’re in Edinburgh do not miss the opportunity to go here. When we come back, no doubt we will be returning! Note: don’t dress with a farmer/ peaky blinder hat unless you want to be picked on.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 February 2023

Cannot stress how much fun this place is - comedy is fantastic obviously but the staff and venue made the night even better. Supppppper cool bar area, super interesting & cool interior. the staff are super welcoming / friendly - bartneders were fantastic given how busy it was getting, even the bouncer was great to chat too.
Naturally the comedians were great but for the price you pay you really do get your moneys worth.
We were only in Edinburgh for a couple of days but myself and my partner agreed that this was absolutely the highlight of visiting. All in all a 10/10 experience and couldn't recommend enough if you're in the area or just visiting.

A really funny lineup and a great evening for a couple.
The staff were really friendly and helpful and it was easy to order drinks from the bar.
The host George Fox was great and got the crowd warmed up and good interaction with the audience.

We went to the 9pm showing which contained 4 different acts all with a different style of comedy which made for an entertaining show.
You all wait in the bar before the show starts then it is a first come first seated arrangement- we had the honour of front row seats! The host and comedians interacted with us well and we didn't feel we were put on the spot too much which made for an enjoyable experience.
Would definately recommend for a fun night with a good few laughs!

Excellent comedy. Good sized venue - small and friendly but not too small. Good range of comedians- 4 at the 7pm show on the day we went.

Went last Friday Eve for the 7pm opening with friends.
Venue is easy to find off the Mile. Bar wasn't packed and served quickly then was led through downstairs to the stage area. 3/4 acts I found funny. Well worth the £14 ticket

Decent venue, seats are comfier than they look. The comedians were funny and the show was put well together. Highly recommend (I'd go again), though I went with my mom so depending on the type of comedy, I recommend the show and venue but not going with your parent/s 👀

Hi there. I am coming to Edinburgh to celebrate my 40th birthday in June with my husband and three children who are 19, 18 and 13. Is my 13 year old allowed to attend Monkey Barrel with us all? Kind regards.

Hi , does the Venue allowed 6 year old , any show , gig allowed 6 year old ?
Hi, so all under 18s must be accompanied by an adult, and we have a 16 and over guideline, with the ultimate judgement call left in the hands of the under 18's guardian. 6 could be a bit too young, as all of our shows feature adult content. We do not have a children's show on our program.

Hi is the venue near other nightlife? I'm trying to plan our weekend in Edinburgh & wondered if I should book tickets for the Friday night then we could go for drinks afterwards if there are pubs/bars nearby..Many thanks
Hi, thanks for getting in touch - it certainly is. We are right in the middle of the Edinburgh Old Town, which is the hub of the capital's nightlife scene.

Yes. There are a couple of small steps but we have a movable ramp which the team would be very happy to get out for you. Just let us know in advance and we can be ready for you.

If I book for 11 people for a Saturday evening, do we get allocated seats or is it first come first served on seating? If so, any advice on how soon after doors open we would need to be there to sit together. Thanks!
Hello!
You will have allocated seats. Our doors open at 7pm and we ask if you can be prompt for arrival as we do not allow people enter once the show starts at half 8.

We went about 20 mins before and got a great seat st the front but as it's not that big anyway there aren't any really bad seats.
