Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My wife and I did this tour pre-Covid. But I just ran into the old pictures and smiled at what a special afternoon experience we had on the Potter Tour! It is always a treat to find others who love the Wizarding World, which is one reason why this particular tour should be on your to-do list. Another reason is the dedication and clever wit of the guide, Sam. Finally, the personal touches were quirky and adorable, and my favorite memories of our Scotland vacation.

Sam was an incredible guide! He was insanely knowledgeable and can easily customize the tour to the interests of the group. He added in fun things like costumes and even had gold coins to win the House Cup! He made sure to give you breaks to sit since it is a lot of walking but you get to go all over Edinburgh and see things you may not have even known were there! 20/10 I cannot recommend this tour but mainly Sam enough! He even stopped and bought us all ice cream which was incredibly kind and not needed!

Oh yes, the benches, I do like sitting people down, helps them concentrate. It's great come Autumn when the benches are available. Muggles are sprawled all over them all summer. I have tried to 'IMPERIO!' them aside but never again. I used to love skiing but after Azkaban, it's beach holidays all the way. Ah yes my Whisky ice cream, it's a sparkler in your mouth ✨ Scotland's smallest ice cream parlour has now shut for winter, so you were the last. Thanks so much, Michaela. May your dining be as fabulous as Hogwarts and your winning as fine as Slughorns 😊 x Sam

We were met by wizard Sam and the magic began. His knowledge, his wit and his story telling keeps you absolutely captivated and time seems to disappear!
It was wonderful to be part of a small personalised tour and to see so much behind the scenes of Edinburgh, it is all the little things that made the day so special!! Huge thank you, even the not so Harry Potter fan amongst us had a great day and we captured some fabulous photo’s and have a day of adventure planned visiting all Sam’s recommendations. Went above and beyond would Highly recommend!!

Thank you, Liz! Yes, it's not inexpensive, so if you want a small group tour I'm the Wizard! 👹 "Wizard huh? Barely. Next, they'll be calling Master Longbottom professor!" - left Gargoyle, headmistress's office. I'm pleased it was pleasing to you and I'm plus-pleased you chose me. I really wanted a third permutation on 'pleased' there, but there are only two in Muggle. There are a dozen in Mermish 🫤 May Merlin steer your broom to the pleasantest pastures & lots & lots of Butterbeer 🙌 x Sam

Sam is a potter fan like me and his knowledge is absolutely amazing, I had our granddaughter lily with us and she was absolutely in awe of Sam, he made it a lot of fun for the whole family and I think we will be doing the longer tour next time.
There are many potter tours around but Sam is a true potter fan so look no further than Sam, 5 star tour

Cheers Kevin. The worry with preteens is my tours are such a long time listening they'll glaze over. Glad that wasn't the case. There are so many things to do in Edinburgh and the cost of accommodation is so much, it really pleases me when my tour is considered worthy. Thanks, Kevin and Alison and Lily and coven. I'd wish you McGonagall's fist of iron & Hagrid's glowing heart 💖 But you already have it. So I'll wish you his larder instead. Pumpkins the size of Lily! x Sam

We laughed, we cried, we were entertained and got a fantastic tour of Edinburgh. Sam is one of the most dedicated wizard guides I have ever met.
He has an encyclopedic knowledge of HP and Edinburgh and is in his element sharing it. This is THE ONLY HP EDINBURGH tour to consider.

Yes, visitors with good English still have difficulty understanding me. Sadly it would be better to book a shorter tour in such instances. Thanks for seeing my graft Shay 😘 May fate blow from your tail & gnomes never gobble your carrots. Buggers 😖 Sam

What we loved about this tour was how fully Sam brought us into the world of JK Rowling while sharing the well known and lesser known places around Old Town. Sam is a wealth of information about not only the work of Rowling but also many other Scottish writers and the city itself. But he didn’t just feed us information as we explored Edinburgh for 5+ hours, he told stories, did magic tricks, and invited us into the experience through some role playing. He even surprised us with treats like chocolate frogs, sherbet lemons (Dumbledore’s favorites) and a stop for butter beer. A five hour tour isn’t for the week of heart or soft of foot but if you want a genuinely unique and memorable experience this tour is a must. My wife and I took our two teenage kids along with us and they had a great time. Having a few people up to speed on the series is very helpful and makes the time a lot more enjoyable and relatable. We were only in Edinburgh for five days but it was our favorite experience of our time in the city. Eight thumbs up!!!

Thanks Rob! Yes, I want pilgrims to have Rowling's view of the world. I want them to understand what excites, moves & drives her today, decades after her flight from the cupboard. And I have to point out some features along the way or I'd be remiss 🤷 I sent your review to my Mum 🦉 it's been a pandemic since I've been graced by one so articulate; Mum quizzed me on you. Thanks so much Rob. May your self-writing Quill never flag & your Mandrakes forever flourish 🫚 » ✨ » 🪴

Sam took us through the nooks and crannies of Edinburgh and Rowling’s life and writing process. He was very conversational, patient, and enthusiastic! Our 11 and 15 year olds had a great time!

Thanks, Robyn, yes Nooks & crannies are quintessential old town. There are secret passages too, if I could I'd take you down some, but they don't lead to Honeydukes, just skeletons & drums. I only run the Potterhead a very few times a year consequently it is sometimes less smooth than my abbreviated tours. I'm very happy it was still a good experience for y'all. May your Droobles Best Blowing Gum pop louder than the Fat Friar's Apparition 🫨 (Which, when he was corporeal, was very loud indeed 🥴) x Sam

Very intersting tour with a knowledgeable and super nice guide. I was afraid that 4 hours is too long but it felt much shorter. Sometimes he talked a bit too fast for me as non native speaker, but adapted as soon as I mentioned it. A loooot of information and very nice emails with additional information afterwards from time to time. We enjoyed it!

Thanks Lila! Yes, I speak ridiculously ridiculously fast; flagging me on it, if needed repeatedly, is totally the way to go 💯 You can take the nerd from their books, but you can't take their gabble from them. I'm glad I wasn't terrible and my long, long tour's intense detail was enjoyed and my epilogue valued 😌 T'was a lot of effort, researching, and learning and finally supplementing. Folk's appreciation is like a wagon of Dragon manure, I just want to dive in and savour its delicious curdy goodness 😆 Well I am part Gnome... Strange story that. x Sam
