Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Even though the weather wasn’t great, it didn’t bother this interesting tour. As part of the fringe I took this tour and it was really informative and never dull! The guide had a lot of knowledge not only of Sherlock Holmes but also the history of Edinburgh.

Thank you Simon! So glad that you enjoyed the tour despite the rain. It is, after all, the 'real' Sherlock Holmes Walking Tour and at least you got to experience the 'real' Edinburgh! Thank you both for joining me!!

This tour is a great choice for everybody who wants more than a traditional history tour. History though is part of this tour to explain Arthur Conan Doyle's background but it covers much more than that. You learn about Victorian Edinburgh and why it had the best medical faculty in the world, but also how Doyle made his living and who the real Sherlock Holmes was.
The guide is an enthusiast himself (as you can see from his awesome clothing) and always up for a chat about the latest Sherlock news, which makes it even more enjoyable for Holmes fans as well as newbies.
So we definitely recommend this tour; it is money and time well spent!

By the way: Also suitable for non-natives who are fairly familiar with the language. No difficult Scottish accent. ;-)

When you're enthusiastic about something it rubs off. and Toby our guide really enthused us about Arthur Conan Doyle with some fascinating facts about how Sherlock Holmes was 'born'. if you're in Edinburgh during or after the Festival find 1.5 hours to do this tour. You won't be disappointed

My sister and I took this tour last November and it was the best tour we did in Edinburgh. So glad we stumbled upon it! We learned so much, not just about Sherlock Holmes, but also about the history of Edinburgh, even the medical history. Toby was brilliant and has done so much research. His knowledge really shows and he was also very welcoming. I definitely recommend it whether you are a fan of Sherlock Holmes or not, it's well worth it.

Toby was fantastic. He clearly has done research and is so willing to share what he's learned. He spent some extra time chatting with me and gave me some additional resources. He was also helpful and very communicative after the tour. If you want to learn more about SH and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, then this is THE tour to take. Plus, Toby provides some history and perspective of Edinburgh during the tour. I can't say enough about this tour, and I hope to someday bring my students here!

Toby is a fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a historian of the Victorian era, a lover of Edinburgh, a terrific storyteller, and a soon-to-be-published novelist whose company you will enjoy. He is obviously committed to creating the right atmosphere for the walk because he heroically wore woolen pants, woolen vest, and deerstalker on an uncharacteristically hot July day. This walking tour will be a highlight of your time in Edinburgh.

Hi Beth, Thank you so much for your lovely words - I'm delighted that you enjoyed the Tour so much. I have now commenced a run of 25 shows in a row as part of the Edinburgh Fringe and the weather is still warm. By the end of it there will just be a pile of tweeds on the Royal Mile where I once stood! Best Sherlockian regards and thanks, Toby

We were fortunate to schedule a private tour for our family group of 6. Toby did a fantastic job for what turned out to be 3 hours, including the Sherlock Holmes/Conan Doyle & Dr. Bell connections, local history, and a detour to incorporate some Harry Potter elements. It was so wonderful, another family group also booked a private outing with Toby.

My husband and I love walking tours and as our time was limited in Edinburgh, found ourselves joining Toby on this tour, our THIRD of the day. He had us hanging on each word for the entire two hours. The tour was packed with information but relayed with such great storytelling that the time was over before we knew it. We made four stops on the tour, but sadly one of them was not at the Sherlock Holmes statue. It has been removed during a roadway expansion in the area. Rumor has it that the statue will be absent for about two years. Kudos, though, to Toby for contacting us in the late winter to let us know about the statue removal. He didn't need to do that and I thought that was excellent customer service so we weren't disappointed on the day. I highly recommend this tour for great insight in to Arthur Conan Doyle's life and influences as he developed a favorite literary character.
