About
Edinburgh's famous fossil shop was established in 1987 by Stan Wood, a self-taught fossil hunter. Since then we've gone on to forge an international reputation for beautiful and fascinating fossils from all around the world, as well as a wide range of minerals, meteorites and jewellery. We go out of our way to hand pick our stock as much as possible, and try to get as close to the original sources as we can to ensure we always have a strong selection of great value, high quality fossils for sale. Popular favourites include ammonites, dinosaur and shark teeth, fossil fish, trilobites and mammoth hair. We welcome browsers, and are used to answering questions, so feel free to take your time.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Amazing shop full of interesting artefacts!
The owner is super knowledgable and there are some amazing objects to see/purchase.
Last time I was there I bought a 52,000,000 year old fossilised fish which looked like it should be in a museum rather than available to buy. Well worth a trip if you’re in Edinburgh

This is a favourite haunt for visiting relatives, especially the young ones as there is something for all levels of pocket money. This is a shop kept by a qualified and helpful curator, happy to impart knowledge and advise.
As such it is also a great place to shop for presents to help build their collection. I visited today with such a purpose. Undecided between two fine examples, I dug deep and bought them both.

Thanks, Strollerman. No regrets, I hope. I think I remember which they were - they should be well appreciated.

I can’t say enough good things about Mr Wood’s fossils. They were extremely helpful and kind. I was looking for something special and they found it for me in the basement. He went the extra mile for me.
Great fossils, rough rock and jewelry, something for everyone. Next time I’m in Edinburg Scotland, you can bet I’ll be back. Thanks so much

This is such a great shop, so much interesting stock, minerals and fossils, I rarely leave empty handed. Just been in to collect some lovely trilobites which were new in, the start of a new collection! So helpful, and always lots of detail about everything you buy. Brilliant.

Lovely shop with a huge selection of stones and fossils and a super knowledgeable owner. Enjoyed browsing and bought a very unique two-piece fossil. Reasonable prices. A little unexpected gem, enjoy!

Wow! What an amazing shop! Such a variety of fossils, minerals and jewellery too. I like that there are small pocket money items for kids too. You get labels telling you about the things you buy (name, age, locality) so you don’t forget. My new purchases look lovely on my table!
I’d advise anyone in the area to visit this fantastic spot 😉

Great little shop that stocks some rare and interesting fossils and minerals alongside more common but beautiful specimens. The owner, Matt, knows his stuff and prices are good. Always a joy to visit and see what’s new.

I love coming through to Edinburgh, and I always visit the store. I have bought many fossils/ and crystals over the years, but unfortunately the customer service today was very poor. The guy serving made out that asking to see behind the glass cabinets was a chore, and even sighed loudly when I asked, no conversation or smiles very rude, a real shame when the shop is so beautiful.
