Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Greg was our tour guide for the free walking tour in Edinburgh. He was extremely knowledgeable, laid back and funny. His impressions and impersonations were light hearted and made the stories he was telling very interesting. He could appreciate how cold people were getting by 5.30 on a January evening so he kept the tour to approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, a good time to learn enough and not get too tired and cold. I would definitely recommend these tours, they are a great way to learn about Edinburgh's varied history, past and present.

Our tour was with Richard James, and he was really friendly, entertaining and most of all informative.....he spoke really clearly and well, keeping the group together but with time to take photos.

The tour is hilly as advertised, but Richard allowed time for everyone to keep up and gave some good hints and tips about the things to do in the castle.

The military museum in the castle can take up to 2 hours to view alone, so make sure you bear this in mind.

Maria was absolutely fabulous, a lovely funny and knowledgeable guide who made the tour fun and interesting while learning about Edinburgh and it’s history. Tour was a great intro to the city and gave us some good insights into what else we wanted to see and do and Maria is great at providing additional suggestions and tips for things to do and see. Would recommend doing this earlier on the trip to make the most of any other places to go to and do any additional tours

We took a Free Walking Tour in Edinburgh on the beginning of March with a guide nicknamed "Katy".
Katy started her tour saying she expected at least 10 pounds per person as a tip, and if we didn't agree she and her colleague could easily recommend us another free walking tour in Edinburgh, since there were many. Although she said she volunteered for some kind of women's shelter back home, I really don't think this is the right way to start a FREE walking tour (and I have done countless throughout Europe).. If I wanted a fixed priced tour, I would have done it. I like the freedom to judge my tour guide and give them what they deserve, so I found it extremely rude.
Second of all, I truly believe Katy is not good at public speaking, because everything she said felt memorised and as if she was reading something, even her jokes, which was extremely awkward for everyone.
Also, it was considerably windy and cold in Edinburgh that day, and perhaps the tour should be a bit tailored for those days? Maybe enter a church for 5 minutes? It was excruciating to be stopped in a place for 20 minutes while Katy explained something. So much so that we and other people had to leave before the tour ended. I would say though that the information was interesting, if only she would motivate us to hear it.

Hello Sara_PRV, Thank you for taking the time to review us on TripAdvisor and for choosing us in Edinburgh. We really appreciate your feedback as it helps us to continue making improvements and ensure that tours and experiences promoted by SANDEMANs NEW Europe meet the high standards that travellers expect. We are concerned to learn that your tour with Katy did not meet your expectations. The Free Tour is described as such because there is no maximum or minimum amount any guest is expected to tip; the idea is that every guest should feel comfortable to tip in such a way that reflects their individual budget and what they thought the tour was worth. Any guest who does not wish to tip may decline to do so, and the guides we work with are aware that pressuring guests to tip goes against the Free Tour philosophy. We are truly sorry if your experience did not reflect that. This is not only detrimental to your enjoyment of the tour, but undoes much of the hard work of ourselves and the other guides we work with to promote the concept of a free tour. Thank you once again for reviewing us on TripAdvisor and for joining the tour. We hope to see you again soon on other tours, so we may show you that this experience does not reflect the usual standard of service. Kind regards, The SANDEMANs Team

Unfortunately the free walking tour was cancelled. We booked and arrived more than 15 minutes early as instructed. We then stood around in the cold for 20 minutes only to be told that they had to cancel the tour. Our guide explained that they could not run the tour as they only had 5 participants and they need a minimum of 6 to run a free tour. This is understandable but I think it should be made clear when booking that the tour will be cancelled if there are less than 6 people.

Hello bev2766, Thank you for taking the time to review us on TripAdvisor and for choosing us in Edinburgh. We really appreciate your feedback as it helps us to continue making improvements and ensure that tours and experiences promoted by SANDEMANs NEW Europe meet the high standards that travellers expect. We regret that we were not able to offer you the tour you booked in Edinburgh. It is indeed uncommon that we cancel a tour due to lack of participants. However, as the guides we work with are freelancers, in some very rare cases, they may decide not to go ahead with the tour if the group is too small. This situation was very unfortunate and I understand that this must have been upsetting for you and your group, and may well have caused further disruption to your itinerary. We have already shared your feedback with our operations team and hope that we can make it up to you in the future in any of our cities, and that we may show you this was an exception to a usually excellent level of service. Kind regards, The SANDEMANs Team

As a first time explorer of Edinburgh Jule provided a great insight into medieval Edinburgh and fun facts about the various locations around the city. Her knowledge was further enhanced by the way she was able to engage with her audience in a way where people felt comfortable as well made jokes to keep everyone entertained. Overall, would highly recommend this amazing experience, especially if you are interested in the rich history Edinburgh has to offer!

We had such a great time on the free walking tour with Angus today! He was the perfect balance of informative, entertaining, friendly and approachable. He had great recommendations for things to do in the city, so we’d recommend doing this tour early in your trip so you have time to take advantage of the recommendations. The time flew by! 100% would recommend.

Our engaging, charismatic, and well-informed guide RYAN managed to make a 2.5 hour tour an unforgettable part of my first visit to Edinburgh. The "free" walking tours gives guides motivation to really stand out to earn their tips - and Ryan was a bright star on a gloomy day. He gave a very entertaining overview of life in "old reeky" and the cast of peculiar characters and wicked history that played out within its walls. Best of all, he did it in a way that made you excited to learn, adding anecdotes that explain origins of terms like double jeopardy or getting sh*tfaced that we use today. Ryan never showed the least bit of fatigue or boredom - a stunning feat considering he must do this same tour multiple times a day. Bravo!

Did a tour of the old town of Edinburgh as part of my trip to the city. Sarah, a young Scottish woman, was our guide and has a great personality and lots of knowledge to share of the city. She told us about the history of Edinburgh and Scotland and kept it very interesting and entertaining 😊
Really glad I did this tour on my second day in the city, very helpful to get to know the different streets and landmark areas. Looking forward to doing their tour of Edinburgh castle in the morning!

We signed up for the Free tour of Edinburgh (NB old town only) and were greeted by Angus (with a "g"!) who immediately engaged with the group. He had obviously taken a lot of trouble to include extra facts, a song or two and a poem into his presentation to make this a truly three-dimensional introduction to the city. The tour was well paced and covered plenty of cultural and historical milestones, especially in the context of Scotland's tumultuous relationship with England. As an English couple, we enjoyed Angus' bantering style!
For me, the highlight was the conclusion in the beautiful Greyfriars Kirkyard, finding plenty of non-Harry Potter nuggets to inform the group. This tour certainly left us feeling we had made a good start in learning about Edinburgh, with an appetite for digging deeper next time we are there.
