Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

- Flashgordondundee8 contributionsLittle Gem of EdinburghIv been a few times, I often take other people to see it when in Edinburgh. Great little museum. Great to see what a million pounds looks like. Visited at 1640 Friday 6th with a Freind, they loved it and will return as we were late getting into Edinburgh so only got 20 minutes inside. The lady behind the reception was amazing. She was very helpful and very friendly. I always tell lots of people I know to go visit this place. Thanks for your visit and taking the time to review us. We are delighted you enjoyed the museum, and look forward to seeing you again when you have more time.Written 10 January 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited January 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 7 January 2023
- John BDuluth, Minnesota1 contributionHighly recommend!Really interesting museum! We were here with the kids on a trip to Edinburgh a few months ago and we'd heard that you could strike your own coin here–the staff let us know that that was only during the summer/school holidays at certain hours, but Liam (I hope I'm remembering that correctly, he was the young American at the desk), ended up setting it all up for us during his lunch break anyway! The kids loved it, and he was able to give us some cool background facts. Would highly recommend visiting!Thank you for taking the time to review the museum. We are pleased you enjoyed your visit and got to experience the coin striking. Many thanks again for visiting and recommending us - we really appreciate it.Written 17 April 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2022Written 14 April 2023
- The_Glovers_UKLeeds, United Kingdom520 contributionsInteresting way to kill an hourWe hadn’t planned on visiting the museum but as the weather turned it seemed like a good opportunity. The history was interesting and some of the artefacts fascinating. One small gripe is the advertisement of being able to see a million pounds however all of the notes are marked specimen so it should read ‘ come and see lots of worthless paper’. Still interesting though! Thanks for visiting us and taking the time to review us on Trip Advisor. This small museum was packed full of information about the history of money production including the Bank of Scotland and Lloyds. It's an interesting history. We visited at the same time as quite a large class group so couldn't see everything but still had a fascinating time.Thank you for your review. Brilliant history about Scotlands financial and banking history as well as showing all the old notes and coinage. You can also see the old banking “technology” as well as new. Also you get to see what £1,000,000 looks like. Well worth the visit.Thank you for taking the time to review us. What a brilliant experience! I would recommend this to anyone looking for a really fun way to learn more about Edinburgh’s economy and the history of banking. It includes lots of hands on, practical experiences like cracking a safe which was amazingly fun! :)
All staff were incredibly knowledgable, helpful and friendly. They really enhanced our experience and cannot be praised enough.

A hidden gem just off the mound. I went to visit on my way to Edinburgh Waverley as I was curious by the sign on the gate! I was greeted at the door and was explained the layout of the building! Such kind staff!
I didn’t stay very long but I loved all the different exhibitions and seeing a million pounds was something I never thought I would see!
In the gift shop the staff member was kind enough to give me a poster about the different prints of money to give to my nephews as I bought a book about the basics of money (such a great thing to have in the gift shop for kids) to help them with their current maths topic at school! So so kind!
I will definitely visit again and take more time to explore each exhibition!
