Neighbourhood: New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.

    Fantastic comedy
We attended three nights in a row, 4th, 5th and 6th of June. You should get there shortly after opening time to get a good seat. The staff were all very friendly and the drinks prices are reasonable. The comedy was excellent every night and amazing value for money. All of the comedians were funny, some were newbies, some more experienced. Our favourites were Jay Lafferty and Stu & Garrys improv show with the superb Mc Hammersmith (sorry we forget the other comedians name, Marc from Belgium?!!). We had some real belly laughs and will definitely be back in the future.

Great start to a week-end break in Edinburgh
2 out of the 3 comedians were quite good. We enjoyed our Saturday night show, yet the venue is in a small underground with limited seats, so make your way there early to grab some seats. The bar had a good variety of drinks and was quick enough to serve a few between intervals.

    Red Raw Laughs
Fun night out whilst visiting Edinburgh. Red Raw was a good mix of laughs and some mild open mic discomfort. Amy Matthews kept the evening moving effortlessly…

Seating situation is such a let down
I came here a few years ago and had an enjoyable night so decided to book a show again. We walked past a huge queue of folk just before opening time and couldn't understand why but realised when entering that the stage and seating had been moved since last time and that you aren't guaranteed a seat despite booking months in advance. I was happy enough arriving later as I knew from last time there were rows of seats for everyone with a ticket. Even some coat racks would have been good instead of having to put our stuff on the floor. Disappointed that this wasn't made clearer on the website and unfortunately had to leave early as couldn't stand for 2 plus hours. No reflection on the comedians who were brilliant though. The venue shouldn't be selling more tickets than there is space for people.

Fantastic night out, but get there early.
The comedy was one of the best we’ve been to, compare was terrific right from the staff and the staff were very friendly. My only criticism would be the lack of seats. Those lucky enough to get a seat have a great view with a table, though about 60% of the tickets they sell will inevitably have to stand up. We arrived 40 mins early and the only place we could get was behind a pillar which was a real shame. If you’re prepared to rock up before the doors open, and get bag a seat nice and early, you’re in for an absolutely terrific evening. I think the venue would benefit from rows of seats, and losing the tables, personally. Either that, or sell less tickets.

Amazing night! Super friendly place to visit xxx
From the minute we walked to the door we were welcomed so warmly, so sorry I didn’t take the persons name! We were so lucky to visit on a night Gareth Mutch was filming, it’s our first visit Edinburgh so made it all the more special. Again I apologise I am so rubbish with names but the person that was on first was hilarious. Then Gareth came on and we belly laughed all the way through! What a top night , so much value for money!!!! Definitely worth a visit if you go to Edinburgh, loved every minute! Xxx

    Brilliant.
Well I can honestly what a belter of an evening. Very well planned out and absolute value for money. The compere (Amy I think ) was brilliant. Very sharp clever and hilarious and although all acts were well above average special accolades must go to the absolutely brilliant show by Ian Coppinger. Words fail me as I was in tears of laughter from start to finish. The venue and staff were awesome. My only disgust was that whilst the world has woken up to fake woke delusional more than two gender myths. This venue still allowed people to choose their bathroom. Come on Edinburgh, it’s just wrong to allow anyone into whatever toilet they so desire.

Great night of comedy from RedRaw. The host George Fox was hilarious and had great crowd engagement, including myself. All 8 acts were brilliant and funny. Only complaint is my stomach and chest hurt due to laughing so much

    Anti Valentines Day
Came along with my partner on Valentines Day. She's pregnant, and they managed to reserve a table for us, which was incredibly kind. All the staff in the venue are also lovely and professional, even when dealing with people who've had a bit too much to drink. The acts on this night were quite good, I had a really nice time, and I've always recommended The Stand in Edinburgh!

    Stu and Garry’s Improv Show
Visited last night (5/3) and had way too much fun for a Tuesday! All staff were helpful, laidback and friendly. Great view of stage, table was handy for the bar and accessible loo. Happy to report that bar prices were decent and something to smile about.
Hi there, thanks for the lovely review! We hope to see you again soon.

We visited the first week in April. Had an awesome, funny time. The variety of comedy talent was great. Best of all was the host Daniel. He was very funny relating to the audience and spur of the moment comedy. Drinks were easy to get, warning place gets packed. Arrive early for seating. Had a wonderful time. Will be back!

Absolutely loved the Bona Fide night on 7th April with the fantastic and hilarious Jay Lafferty and a couple of comedians I hadn't seen before and thoroughly enjoyed including Amy Matthews and Emilia Bayler. The headliner was MC Hammersmith and he is always impressive with his lyrical abilities. Definitely seeing all their shows at The Fringe.
Definitely was a 5 out of 5 stars show, always a winner. if you get the chance to see Bona Fide at the stand, go, you are in for a lot of laughs and a great night.

A really great night! Doors open at 7.30pm, show starts at 8.30 and finishes around 10.15pm, with a 20 minute interval after the first act. Compare was the funniest act of the night. Two of the 3 acts were belly-laugh funny, the other didn't really win the room at all. Felt really sorry for them!
It's nice that all phones have to be switched off or put on silent and you're not allowed to film performances.
Venue holds about 100 - 120 but only seating for about 70, so get there early! We got there at 7.10pm and were about 40th in the queue!!
Book in advance as it is fully booked most nights so no just turning up!!
Definitely a great night though!!

The comedy was decent enough but as so many other reviewers have mentioned, there are very few seats so be prepared to stand for the entirety of the show without so much as a shelf to put a drink down on. We got there 10 minutes after the doors opened and it was already standing room only. Uncomfortable and disappointing, maybe they should remove some of the many tables they have for the select few who get a seat as it doesn't seem to make sense for a small majority of folk to have a seat, a good view and a tonne of table space and for everyone else to be uncomfortable, when they could just have a decent amount of chairs. The Stand in Glasgow is far better than this one.

Hi there, very sorry your experience was let down by our seating arrangements. Alas, over the course of our 25+ years we've had many discussions about how best to deal with our wee venue's amount of space and feel that it's preferable to not have to turn people away for lack of seats. We do try and do everything we can to mitigate disappoint before folk arrive, whether over the phone or in your booking confirmation, but we do understand that's not ideal for everyone. For the record, the venue seats about 2/3 of our guests in a sold-out room and we have to abide to fire safety regulations. All the best and glad to hear you're still keen on our Glasgow venue- hope to see you there soon!
